Invasion of the polar vortex

Good Weekend Widdershins!

Yes the polar vortex is going to do one of its little numbers and give a big chunk of the U.S. some of the coldest weather of the season to parts of the midwest, before scooting eastward towards the northeast (heads up DYB!).

the polar vortex is expected to become displaced from the Arctic Circle and plunge down to near the upper Great Lakes.

Our WCW (West Coast Widdershins) should not be affected by this.  Those of us in the south should get some cold weather but nothing earth-shattering, like, say, Chicago.

“Latest indications are that Chicago could set a record on Wednesday for the day’s lowest high temperature,” according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tom Kines. Temperatures have not been held below zero for an entire day in Chicago since Jan. 6, 2014.

And as I said, the northeast will get smacked also.

Temperatures along the I-95 corridor from Philadelphia to New York City to Boston may struggle or fail to reach 20 during the day. Overnight lows can be in the single digits and lower teens.

So let’s take a look at some songs about cold, whether it’s cold weather, cold hearts, groups with “cold” in the name and similar instances.

Good Saturday and Weekend Widdershins!

I don’t know about where all of our Widdershins live, but here in Bama we’re having our first real cold snap potbellied-stovewith an arctic front moving through.  We’ll be having lows in the twenties and teens and a few days where the highs will not climb out of the forties. The Winter Solstice is just a few weeks away.  Yikes!  Fredster is not happy with cold weather.

Perhaps we could make an analogy between the shorter, darker and colder days to the results of the election, but we won’t go there today.  We’ll just ascribe the cold weather to the normal seasons and not give the other thing much thought.  At least for this weekend.

So with that let’s look at some songs about cold, cold weather and the like.  Maybe some cold hearts perhaps?  My choices are below and I look forward to seeing yours in the comments.

So the House Intelligence Committee investigation into Benghazi, after two years (and controlled by the Republicans mind you!), finished up its work and surprisingly found “that the CIA and the military acted properly in responding to the 2012 attack on a U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, and asserted no wrongdoing by Obama administration appointees.”.  Lets review all the allegations that came from the Right after the tragedy:

  • that a CIA response team was ordered to “stand down” after the State Department compound came under attack
  • that a military rescue was nixed
  • that officials intentionally downplayed the role of al-Qaida figures in the attack
  • that Stevens and the CIA were involved in a secret operation to spirit weapons out of Libya and into the hands of Syrian rebels

Eh…not so much said the committee.  Said the chairman of the committee, Mike Rogers, R-Mich. and the ranking member Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland:

“We spent thousands of hours asking questions, poring over documents, reviewing intelligence assessments, reading cables and emails, and held a total of 20 committee events and hearings…”

“We conducted detailed interviews with senior intelligence officials from Benghazi and Tripoli as well as eight security personnel on the ground in Benghazi that night. Based on the testimony and the documents we reviewed, we concluded that all the CIA officers in Benghazi were heroes. Their actions saved lives,” they said.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA NOT Law & Order district attorney) said:

“It’s my hope that this report will put to rest many of the questions that have been asked and answered yet again, and that the Benghazi Select Committee will accept these findings and instead focus its attention on the State Department’s progress in securing our facilities around the world and standing up our fast response capabilities.”

Sounds complete and that the committee did their job right?  Not so fast.  The Speaker is not so happy that the committee was unable to find anything to blame the Democrats or Hillary or the President for, in the investigation.

“On September 11, 2012, four Americans were killed in a brutal terrorist attack in Libya. Two years later, the American people still have far too many questions about what happened that night — and why,” Boehner said in the statement. “That’s why I will reappoint Rep. Trey Gowdy and the Republican members of the House Select Committee to investigate the events in Benghazi in the 114th Congress. I look forward to the definitive report Chairman Gowdy and the Select Committee will present to the American people.”

The problem though is that since the select committee was not a permanent committee, the House will have to vote to recreate and authorize the committee before it can even begin to start work on the eighth committee to look into Benghazi.

If the select committee were to be reauthorized and actually published its conclusions, that report would be the eighth formal investigation into the event.

I mean seriously folks…how many times do the Republicans need to be told nothing is there?

But never fear, our favorite Senator from South Carolina…the one who is a lawyer…the one who was/is aangry Lindsay lawyer in the Navy JAG Corps doesn’t buy it.  He says “it’s a bunch of crap”.  Yeah, I like that legal reasoning…uh-huh.  He believes that the Administration fudged the talking points after the attack.

“I’m saying that anybody who has followed Benghazi at all knows that the CIA deputy director did not come forward to tell Congress what role he played in changing the talking points,” he said. “And the only way we knew he was involved is when he told a representative at the White House, I’m going to do a hard review of this, a hard rewrite.”

I mean, he even got pouty and all when he was interviewed about it.  I’m not saying he needed the fainting couch but I hope one was nearby.  (clip below is 7+ mins. long.  watch however much you can stand and note the volume is loud on this one)

Okay so enough of that.  It’s the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and people are in traveling mode.  Here’s a hope that our Northeastern Widdershins do not get caught up in any snow storms, or travel delays, airport or otherwise.  I’m going to put in a little clip here with Billy Crystal and Robert DeNiro doing a Thanksgiving commercial in 2001 after the attacks.  It was encouraging folks to come visit New York.  Everyone have a great Thanksgiving and be careful in your travels.  This is a completely open thread to discuss whatever you wish.

Enjoy  your turkey and goodies!

No.  Despite spending part of the week-end “at the movies”, I am not referring to the Kurt Russell thriller, but rather to the ugly Florida weather patterns that prompted the title of the film.

Hurricane season officially begins today, but don’t tell the people in Central America.  Tropical Storm Agatha has already claimed almost 100 lives, and the Guatemalans fear that more will be discovered.

Hurricanes are a tropical weather phenomena characterized by a large low pressure system producing thunderstorms ,heavy rains and cyclonic winds.  Interestingly, the winds rotate counterclockwise above the equator, and clockwise below.   Depending upon the timing of the storm, large tidal surges and flooding can create as much if not more damage than the winds themselves.

Florida, The Plywood State, has had more than its share because there are really two hurricane seasons.  The Atlantic Season (June-August) and the Gulf Season (September-November) both impact the state.  And, the same storm can clobber both coasts as the peninsula is less than 100 miles wide.  Therefore, we are generally really, really good at this.  After Andrew (1992), George H.P. Bush landed at Homestead Air Force Base briefly and didn’t see much wrong.  Actually, I’m not certain that he could have seen much at all, because Homestead was kaput.  Andrew was a small, compact, Category 5 that pretty well took out South Miami-Florida City, and did peripheral damage through the Upper Keys to the south and South Broward to the north.  (We had Category 2 and 3 winds:  plenty of damage, no power for a month, but we still had houses.)  The other good thing about Andrew was that it was fast and dry.

Wilma (2005), on the other hand, was a Gulf Storm that struck Naples as a Category I and was propelled across the peninsula by a cold front.  She arrived at my house as a Category 3 and sat overhead for ages.  It was a lot like living in a blender for 8 hours or so.  Fences were gone, shrubbery was gone, power was out for a month – again.  (Florida Plunder and Loot is not really big on preventive maintainance:  it took writing to the Governor to get a transformer changed, as there are two medically dependent people in my neighborhood, myself and a child on home dialysis.)  While Jeb Bush was sterling during the storms of 2004, he was MIA in 2005 – not an election year, and who cares about the liberal heathens of Broward, anyhow?

Here are Dr. Grey’s predictions for 2010, so I’ll hit the highlights:

Named Storms: 15

Named Storm Days:  75

Hurricanes: 8

Hurricane Days: 35

Major Hurricanes:  4

Now, remember that a tropical storm is 35-74 mph winds, Category 1 is 75-94mph, Category 2 is 96-110, Category 3 is 111-130, Category 4 is 131-155, and Category 5 is 156mph and up.  My actual dragging fear is that the Gulf will be loaded with oil when their season starts in August, and no one has a clue of what oil on the water will do to winds (or vice-versa, for that matter).  I know that any storm surges will be glutted with oil plus nasty chemical agents and dead marine life.  This is beginning to sound somewhat apocalyptic.

However, before I become too steeped in oily self-pity, I ask that everyone remember the Haitians, who are confronting hurricane season huddled under tarps and sheets.  They need help.  They needed it months ago, but the loss of life will be appalling if anything major hits, because there’s just nowhere to hide.  My little bungalow was built in the 50’s and has stood up to many a wind, and I can hunker down and wait the storms out.  I have a generator, and can keep going until Florida Plunder and Loot pulls themselves – and me – back together, but the Haitians can’t plan on much of anything good happening to them.  Please keep giving to the Clinton Foundation, so that when the storms strike Haiti, we can bury the dead and try to help the survivors.

This is an open thread.
