Sunday Sundries

There’s a lot going on this Sunday, and of course, the Oscars are tonight – we’ll have a live blog later for those who will be watching with us!

Over at Corrente, they’re wondering: Can we make 101 calls for Single-Payer (Medicare for All) in March? (Also known as “Operation Rumpelstiltskin,” since Single-Payer seems to be the forbidden word in the Obama Administration)

That’s just 4 phone calls a day, if you dedicate the rest of March to this project, and while phone calls are good, you can substitute* emails, faxes, postcards, or heavenstomurgatroyd! an actual in-person visit to the Congresscritter of your choice. We’ll let you substitute Representatives for Senators, if you like, ‘cuz it sure couldn’t hurt for Nancy Pelosi to be deluged with calls for single payer.

A suggestion to get you started, from Healthcare-NOW!, call the White House and then use their online tool for calling your Senators and Representative:

President Obama recently said, “If anyone from either party has a better approach that will bring down premiums, bring down the deficit, cover the uninsured, strengthen Medicare for seniors, and stop insurance company abuses, let me know.”

We should let him know that single-payer, Improved Medicare for all, accomplishes all those goals.

Call the White House at 202-456-1111. Tell them, “I’m letting you know that improved Medicare for all (HR 676) is better than the health bill proposed by Congress.”

If you have another second, email the President here to ask him to start from scratch on health reform.

And don’t forget to call Congress for single-payer.

Report back here in comments on whatever action you take no matter how small and insignificant it may seem to you.

* Should you decide to substitute something like picketing your Congresscritter with brightly colored posters demanding Medicare For All or getting arrested for single payer in place of the more mundane phonecalling, that would be way cool, and posting a photo or two would make it even cooler!

To help in this effort, I would like to organize a demonstration for Medicare for All on Saturday, March 27th in front of Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney’s office on the Upper East Side, from 4:00 – 5:30 pm.  If the TEA Party people can do it, we can too!

If you’d like to join me, say so in comments and I will contact you. I’ve got a little site set up for it and everything! 🙂

Move along, nothing to see here

Move along, nothing to see here

So many sundries this week, so little time! Let’s discuss:

Obama’s DOJ Thinks Letting Torturers Go Free is a “No-Brainer”

Cheney confessed to waterboarding on national teevee. The dudes who wrote the torture memos have been cleared of all misconduct. But don’t worry, I’m sure that the Democrats in Congress will…write some sternly worded letters or something. Hey, nothing to see here. Move along, people.

RIP, Alexander Haig: No Longer “In Control”

A strange and turbulent life has ended.

Long before comedians began poking fun at George W Bush’s inventive neologisms and syntax, they were mocking Haig’s frequent “Haigisms”. He was famous for reviving Winston’s Churchill phrase “terminological inexactitude” — Haig’s offending sentence ran: “That’s not a lie. It is a terminological inexactitude. Also, a tactical misrepresentation.” On another occasion he remarked: “The warning message we sent the Russians was a calculated ambiguity that would be clearly understood.”

In 1981, when President Reagan was in hospital after a failed assassination attempt, Haig famously appeared to blunder on television, claiming: “I am in control here” — when, in fact, the order of succession places the secretary of state below the vice-president and the speaker of the House. The quotation became seen as an attempt by Haig to exceed his authority, although the full text acknowledged the constitutional niceties (“As for now, I’m in control here, in the White House, pending the return of the vice-president”).

Reid: Dems will Use 50-vote Tactic to Finish Health Care in 60 Days

Democrats will finish their health reform efforts within the next two months by using a majority-vote maneuver in the Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said.

Reid said that congressional Democrats would likely opt for a procedural tactic in the Senate allowing the upper chamber to make final changes to its healthcare bill with only a simple majority of senators, instead of the 60 it takes to normally end a filibuster.

“I’ve had many conversations this week with the president, his chief of staff, and Speaker Pelosi,” Reid said during an appearance Friday evening on “Face to Face with Jon Ralston” in Nevada. “And we’re really trying to move forward on this.”

The majority leader said that while Democrats have a number of options, they would likely use the budget reconciliation process to pass a series of fixes to the first healthcare bill passed by the Senate in November. These changes are needed to secure votes for passage of that original Senate bill in the House.

“We’ll do a relatively small bill to take care of what we’ve already done,” Reid said, affirming that Democrats would use the reconciliation process. “We’re going to have that done in the next 60 days.”

Golly gee willikers, you mean it DOESN’T take 60 votes to get legislation passed? Well, knock me over with a feather! What an awesome time for the Dems to “figure this out” – just in time to get their latest piece of crap passed for their insurance industry buddies.

Something tells me everything we hate – the individual mandates, the restrictions on abortion, the lack of any price controls – will remain. As for the public option sparkle pony, they can call anything a “public option” these days and people will believe it. As so many of us have said so many times, the Dems will simply slap the label “public option” on the Health Whatever Bill and they’ll count it as a “historic” victory. Just like the election of the first black President, I fear that this will prove to be a hollow victory indeed for those of us not at the top of the wealth pyramid.

A Bloggy Heart

For those of you that care, Happy Valentine’s Day!

Here’s what’s happening:

Bill Clinton Released From the Hospital, Prognosis Excellent

Pictures taken of Clinton’s arteries and of bypass grafts he received four years ago revealed that one of the grafts was blocked. Because of that problem, doctors placed two stents in his coronary artery. A stent is a wire mesh tube used to prop open an artery.

The insertion of two stents “makes him less susceptible to future heart attacks,” Schwartz said. “His prognosis is excellent.”

The blockage was typical of the “natural history” of bypass treatment, which has a 10 to 20 percent failure rate five years after the surgery, according to Schwartz.

“This was not a result of his lifestyle or diet, which have been excellent,” he said, adding that Clinton is “in excellent condition, as evidenced both by what he does and objective testing.”

The former president’s counselor, Douglas Band, released a statement Thursday saying that Clinton, currently the U.N. special envoy to Haiti, is in “good spirits and will continue to focus on the work of his foundation and Haiti’s relief and long-term recovery efforts.”

Clinton’s doctor described the ex-president as “up and walking around and visiting with his family,” adding that the former president probably will be able to go back to work on Monday.

“The goal of the treatment … is for President Clinton to resume his very active lifestyle,” he said.

ABC News’ chief political correspondent George Stephanopoulos, who once worked for Clinton in the White House, noted Clinton’s non-stop work ethic and said the former president has worked “20 hours a day for the last 20 years.”

Clinton’s daughter Chelsea and his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, both were by the former president’s bed, according to Schwartz.

And speaking of the Clintons…

Luge Events Have Resumed At Slightly Slower Speeds After Tragic Death of Georgian Luger

Olympic luge events will start farther down the track than originally planned, officials said Saturday, a decision they made with the “emotional component” of athletes in mind following the death of a Georgian competitor.

They reiterated that the lightning-fast track was safe for competition, and Olympic officials said they were “completely satisfied” with the adjustments.

“We never said it is too fast,” International Luge Federation president Josef Fendt said.

An extra session of men’s training, as well as all four runs of the men’s event—two on Saturday, two on Sunday—will begin from the women’s start ramp. Meanwhile, the women’s and doubles entrants in the Olympic field will now start even lower, at the junior start position, between the fifth and sixth curves.

It means speeds in all luge events will be a bit slower at the Whistler Sliding Track, where 21-year-old Nodar Kumaritashvili crashed and died in a training run on Friday after his body flew over the track wall and smashed into a steel pole at nearly 90 mph.

The decision to change the start’s location seemed to have the desired effect during men’s training on Saturday, the first session on the track after Kumaritashvili’s terrifying crash. None of the 36 sliders, all of whom wore black tape on the left sides of their helmets in tribute to Kumaritashvili, broke 90 mph after speeds routinely surpassed 95 mph earlier in the week.

Which Team Will Prevail?

Which Team Will Prevail?

All right folks, after three freakin’ days of football at TW, we’ve reached the Big Day Itself. The Mighty Contest between those Titans of the Turf, the Colts and the Saints!  And we will be liveblogging once it starts at 6:25 pm. (Remember to flip channels when you see that odious Pam Tebow ad!)

But shockingly, there are other things going on in the world other than the most important football game EVAH! Here are a few for your reading and and discussing pleasure.

Wall Street CEOs Form Conservative “Action Tank”

This week, a group that includes some of the wealthiest Republican CEOs on Wall Street have formed a group to take advantage of new fundraising possibilities for the GOP.

The Supreme Court ruling could potentially allow the group, called the American Action Network, to take unlimited contributions from corporations for use in political campaigns.

“This administration as well as Citizens United [the Supreme Court ruling] — when you combine the two the prospects for funding these types of efforts are greatly enhanced,” said Norm Coleman, one of the group’s organizers.

Coleman called the group an “action tank” or a “think-and-do tank.”

Oliver North Compares Homosexuality to Pedophilia

Oliver North, the former Marine implicated in the Iran-Contra scandal and current Fox News host, says allowing gays to serve openly in the military will lead to same-sex marriages in the military and the admission of pedophiles to the armed forces.

In an interview with Fox’s Sean Hannity Thursday, North discussed what he sees as the implications of repealing the 17-year-old “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

“Now, here’s what’s next. NAMBLA members, same-sex marriages,” North said, referring to the North American Man-Boy Love Association, a group that advocates for pedophilia. “Are chaplains in the US military going to be required to perform those kinds of rituals? Do they [pedophiles and homosexuals] get government housing?”

North, who hosts Fox’s War Stories, told Hannity that the effort to repeal DADT amounts to a “stunning assault on the all-volunteer military, the very best in the world. Barack Obama now intents to treat them like lab rats in a radical social experiment, and it can be very, very detrimental.”

Just Another Week In Washington

Just Another Week In Washington

It’s been quite a week in Washington. President Obama has been talking a lot, and as usual, both sides of his mouth appear to be working quite well.

At Real Clear Politics, for example, it has dawned on some that Obama’s oft-repeated assurance that “if you like your health insurance, you can keep it” would not be true under the current Health Whatever bill. Unlike the author of the article I’ve linked, I don’t think this admission is stunning at all. In fact, I don’t know where the hell this guy has been for the past several months, since Stupak-Pitts and its evil twin in the Senate explicitly strip women of their abortion coverage if they (or their insurance companies! or their employers!) DARE to take one penny of federal dollars to defray their health insurance costs.  Way to be on top of it, dude. Hey, do you think the Giants will ever win the Super Bowl?

The Supreme Court made a spectacularly bad decision regarding campaign financing, ruling that money was, in fact, speech, and thus corporations could not be restricted from “speaking” as loudly as they wanted for any politician in America. Hooray, now the corporations can buy politicians outright instead of using that quaint tactic, “bundling,” to group together smaller contributions to make one large, yet legal, “bundle.” Obama gently wagged his finger about that decision during the State of the Union, which apparently was simply unheard of. Trust the Village to focus on the alleged incivility of Obama’s comment rather the substance of it. Where, where is my fainting couch?

Meanwhile, Chris Matthews made quite an incredible statement about Obama’s alleged post-raciality. Apparently this mythical quality was so strong that it made the yellow-haired motormouth forget the President was black for about an hour. Yes, shockingly, Matthews was able to look past Obama’s skin color for 60 whole minutes on Wednesday! One wonders how he was able to do any reasoned analysis of Obama’s positions and qualifications during the election of 2008, then, since he seemed to be so focused on skin color that he couldn’t forget it before now. (snort) I can’t help wondering: If Matthews were a guy who didn’t tingle at Obama’s every utterance and invest him with beliefs and personality traits Obama simply does not possess, would Tweety still have a job at MSNBO?

In other news, we’re putting lots of missiles in the Persian Gulf in case Iran really has nukes. It seems to me we might be overreacting a tad, however. I mean, the evidence we’ve been using seems a bit…dodgy. Ah well – we’ve gotta feed that military-industrial complex, and we do it by being the biggest arms dealer in the world, selling lots of countries lots of weapons. So, even if Iran doesn’t have nukes, we still get to make lots of money pretending they do. It’s a win-win!

And finally…this is a blogroll call! Our blogroll is out of date, and needs to be expanded. Which sites do you visit that we don’t have listed? Which ones have gone to the dark (wingnut) side? We’d also like to add some good news sources to the list. I like Common Dreams and Truthout, now that the Kool-Aid has worn off; also, Raw Story.

Put your recommendations out there in comments, folks. It’s a big blogosphere, and we’d like to give traffic where traffic is due.

This is an open thread.
