The Widdershins

Dear Donald…

Love and light to all of us today, Widdershins. Let us hope that we make it through whatever evil has been planned or conceived to be wrought upon this occasion of pure joy and hope.

Because it should be nothing but joy and hope. It should be an occasion we are all unequivocally celebrating. We should all be drunk on champagne at noon ET. But we can’t let out our collective breaths till we know our President, Madam Vice President Kamala, and new Senators Jon Ossoff, Raphael Warnock and Alex Padilla are sworn in.

Please, Goddess, please let the inauguration happen without another horror being perpetrated. Please. I don’t think we can take any more.

Open thread of course.

Georgia Senate Candidates – courtesy of Vox.com

Happy Veteran’s Day all. Shinners, we did it! Through massive turnout and tons of hard work from volunteers and organizers all over the country, we elected Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the Oval Office. Although there are many efforts by the outgoing Drumpf administration to try to delegitimize the vote, none are seen as having a chance of succeeding. As for the transition that the Rethugs are trying to block (lawless to the end), Joe Biden is already threatening to take it to court and consider “other options” as well.

As Fredster noted a while back in the comments, however, winning the Senate was really important. And so far, we haven’t done it…but we still can! It’s all because of Georgia, Georgia, Georgia.

So how did one state with fewer than five million voters throw the entire race for control of the Senate into overtime? Georgia has an unusual requirement that candidates must receive a majority of the vote to win an election, and if no one does so, the top two finishers advance to a runoff. We were expecting this to happen in Georgia’s special election for Senate, in which 20 candidates were on the ballot. (In that race, the top two vote-getters were Democrat Raphael Warnock, who has received 32.9 percent of the vote so far, and Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler, who has received 25.9 percent.) But it also happened in Georgia’s regularly scheduled Senate election: Returns currently show Republican Sen. David Perdue at 49.7 percent of the vote and Democrat Jon Ossoff at 48.0 percent. (Libertarian Shane Hazel took the remaining 2.3 percent.)

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting my texting/writing/phone banking sweatpants on and have set up my weekly donation to Stacey Abrams’ organization, Fair Fight. Believe it or not, provisional ballots get sent out next Monday!!!

Let’s make it our mission to make sure Mitch McConnell never becomes Senate Majority Leader in 2021.

Open thread as always.
