The Widdershins

Good Monday, all. I seem to be posting on all the important occasions lately! Today, of course, is the 16th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11th, which changed our country forever…and not in a good way.

Since that awful day, a massive rightwing ratf*cking has been perpetrated against the American people. The first illegitimate Republican Presnit, George W. Bush, used the fear and rage universally felt on 9/11 to run rampant over the Constitution, lie us into two unwinnable wars in the Middle East, and tilt the balance of the Supreme Court to the hard right for the foreseeable future. This opened the door to everything Drumpf has taken advantage of; from Citizens United (which, lest we forget, originated as a lawsuit against Hillary Clinton), which sent a flood of dark money into the political process. Focused and malevolent billionaires, like the Mercers and the Koch Brothers, set about facilitating the buying of Congresscritters, the growth of the conservative media, and the rigging of elections through gerrymandering, dodgy touch-screen voting machines and removal of Democratic voters from rolls. All through this long dark time, we also saw Bush massively screw up foreign policy, and tank the economy and the federal budget by cutting taxes during war, which no POTUS had ever done. Under Bush, the gap between rich and poor, steadily growing since the 1980s, began to increase exponentially.

Along with many other Americans, I often find myself tempted to think that Bush was better than Drumpf…but is that really the case? In hindsight, wasn’t Dubya more of a template, a trial run, for the carnival barker we didn’t elect – an entitled billionaire who was sold by the media as more of a “man of the people” than the very qualified and intelligent, non-billionaire Democrat running against him? And didn’t the media crucify Gore for idiotic transgressions, like sighing during a debate and “wearing earth tones” – just as they crucified Hillary for her femaleness, her “cackle” and her g*ddamn private email server?

If we look a little deeper, there is a real through line between Bush and our current pResident  For example, isn’t it interesting that David Bossie, the former President of Citizens United, now works for the Mango Meerkat? And that the Kochs and Mercers stand solidly behind him? I remember that so very much of what Dubya did was “unprecedented” as well…like, for example, “winning” the election even though the popular vote went against him, and basically being appointed by fiat of the Supreme Court, in a decision that could NOT be used as a basis for legal action in any other situation!

Hell, Dubya even legitimized the Republican love affair with dearest Pooty-Poot. As the Cowboy from Connecticut said in 2001:

“I looked the man in the eye. I found him to be very straightforward and trustworthy. We had a very good dialogue. I was able to get a sense of his soul; a man deeply committed to his country and the best interests of his country.”

Ewwwwww!

While many of these issues were boiling under the surface before September The Eleventh, Two Thousand and One, George W. Bush knew he “hit the trifecta” on that horrible day. He was free to ratf*ck as he saw fit, and he began to loosen the norms of Presidential behavior and economic good practice immediately.

The United States has never recovered from his tenure in office. Our peace, prosperity and safety evaporated with Bill Clinton’s departure, and despite the past 8 years of Obama, have never returned.

Let’s hope we’ve learned our lessons from 2001. We thought Bush was the Worst President Ever, but in just a few months, we’ve seen that in Der Drumpfenfuhrer, the Republicans had an even worse ratf*cker up their sleeves. Let’s keep our eyes open, our feet on the streets, and our Congresscritters on speed-dial. And hey, should the Tangerine Turd make it to 2020, we’ve got lots of options, as the guy in the video below notes.

Good Monday Widdershins!

Our blogmistress had some real life issues come up so I’m covering here at sort of the last minute.  Because of that and not having a lot of time this is mainly going to be a link dump post.

From this WaPo piece, it seems like the “ugly American” tourist is making a resurgence.  Only this tourist was in Germany and thought it would be cute to do a Nazi salute.  Color him clueless since he seemed not to know that the salute is a crime in Germany and he got busted-literally.  Someone saw him do it and beat the crap out of him.

An American tourist gave the Nazi salute in Germany — so a stranger beat him up, police say

Peter Cvjetanovic would like you to know that he’s really, really not a racist mkay.  No, seriously.

You can read that HERE. By the way he’s also a precious 20 years old.  Whatcha wanna bet he’s still on mom and dad’s health insurance?

* * * *

There is a new hashtag that is going viral, #ThisIsNotUS and you can check out a HuffPost article on it.

* * * *

From Business Insider here is an article with some background info, on the hit and run driver in Charlottesville, James Fields, again a 20 year old.

* * * *

David Frum in The Atlantic says it’s time for Republicans to “leap from the boat” that is the S.S. Trump. And I thought they were all so comfortable there.

* * * *

The occupant of the White House, appeared to be his usual clueless self when he made his statement after the events in Charlottesville happened and it took his staff making the rounds of the news shows the following day to attempt some damage control.

The last link I have for you today is to an article about the photographer who captured the image of the car slamming into the counter-protesters.  That was his last day working for the newspaper.

Welp, that’s all I have for you today.  Hope you check out the links.  Of course this is an open thread.

Good Monday, all. There’s a lot going on, and most of it not good, as usual, these days. The new bootlicker Drumpf has hired to represent him on teevee is typical of all his stooges: narcissistic, greedy (h/t Prolix!), and intimately tied to Russia. He’s dangling lots of fake news in front of the cable news media, and they’re all lapping it up. Drumpf still doesn’t believe Russia attacked our elections!! (Of course he does, idiots. He and his campaign helped make it happen.) He’s looking into pardoning himself!! (Of course he is. That doesn’t mean he’ll do it, for heaven’s sake. He knows he’s going to get caught, and is looking for ways to evade the consequences, just the way he always does.)

Meanwhile, some Democrats are buying into stupidity of their own. Such as, “Hillary lost ‘the Obama coalition’ to Drumpf!!! ZOMG we have to chase those 70,000 switchers in swing states with a strong economic message!” Do old white guys like Chuck Schumer never get tired of mansplaining to women?

Apparently the fact that Nate Silver, expert pollster, agrees with Hillary’s analysis of why she lost, has failed to penetrate. And, apparently the fact that the Resistance is female, and the base of the Democratic Party is female AND of color, is immaterial to Chuck and his fellow mansplainers.

Someone please tell me this: how is it a good strategy to target only a few white men by focusing on an economic message that is proven to be irrelevant, and ignore the giant mass of women that is active, energized and ready to vote, and run, as Democrats?

Like this woman.

In Prince William County, Hala Ayala is hoping to bring her values of empowerment for women and equality for all to Richmond, and at the same time, send home one of Virginia’s leading anti-choice, anti-immigrant delegates.

Ayala has long been involved in local politics. She volunteered for President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign in 2012. And in 2014, she helped revive the National Organization for Women (NOW) chapter in her community, becoming its president.

Now THAT is the Obama coalition, you jack*sasses!

The Democrats would be much, much better off energizing its base with a sharper version of Hillary’s message, than losing its principles by trying to gain the voters who want to go back to the fake 50’s in their heads.

Hala Ayala is doing something. And we should too. Forget the Democratic Establishment. The more we Do Something, the more they will get the message.

So let’s go to marches. Let’s form groups. Let’s donate to Planned Parenthood and the ACLU. Let’s call our Senators and attend Town Halls.

It’s all working. Let’s stick with it!

This is an open thread.

This cartoon is from 2014.

Good Monday, all! I was just in the Caribbean without WiFi for 10 days and let me tell you, it was bliss. But alas, Drumpf is still Presnit despite all my most fervent, daiquiri-induced prayers to the Beach Goddess. So it’s time to fire up the Interwebz, put on my big-girl pants and ask this very important question:

How long has Russia been in control of the Republican Party’s agenda?

I realize that what I am saying has not yet been proven. (The operative word, pardon the pun, being “yet.”) But the circumstantial evidence is starting to become, at least in my mind, too overwhelming to ignore.

Let’s just take a minute to ponder the “coincidence” of every single person on Drumpf’s team having a Russian connection.  Every. Single. Person. Rationally speaking, how is this possible? Remember, in 2015, the Mango Meerkat was nothing more than a sleazy, self-important television personality who decided to run for President. He didn’t have a lot of contacts in the Republican Party, since he wasn’t actually a Republican. So what did he do? He surrounded himself with a mix of family, veteran Goopers and white supremacists, all of whom he realized he needs in order to steal the election in 2016. And amahzingly, there isn’t one that is free of ties to Russia.

Seriously.

I’m not just talking about his family – those connections can be explained by the fact that Drumpf is in bed with Russian kleptocrats, and his sons and daughter are all active participants in his corrupt business practices. I’m talking about the Republicans who, from Day 1, came along for the ride in the Orange Klown Kar. Roger Stone. Paul Manafort. New York’s Nosferatu, Rudy Giuliani. Henry Kissinger, for f*ck’s sake. Why? What could this babbling, Tweeting, empty-headed egomaniac have to offer them? Didn’t they have any principles, people wondered. Had they all gone crazy?

Well yes, they have principles. It’s just that these principles just happen to be the same as those of Vladimir Putin. To whom they are all so coincidentally connected.

Good Monday, all! As Big Daddy Deplorable continues his epic meltdown, we’ve seen an equally epic, and almost fatally overdue, avalanche of truthful, and thus negative, press about his lack of fitness to be President. This “Holy sh*t, what have we done?!” moment from the press corpse has been rather gratifying to us here at TW. Except for one, teeny, eeny little caveat: Where’s HRC?

It seems the collective media, despite a resounding and practically universal acknowledgement of her stellar debate performance last week, still cannot bring itself to cover any of Hillary’s events, or discuss any of her policies and plans for the country. To do this would be acknowledging that she is not actually an evil murderous robot, but a real, live human being who is 1000% prepared for her time in the Oval Office. This is, I suppose, not exciting or “sexy” enough for the media, especially when it comes from a girl. Sadly, when Stepford Spokesperson Kellyanne Conway says she never hears about any kind of policy from the Democratic side, she’s right – because it’s been utterly, completely invisible.

Oh, but Hillary’s “glaring weakness” is sure to be covered, even as her huge bump from the debate performance is minimized and caveatted as though its accuracy were going to be defended in a court of law. (On  September 30, according to fivethiryeight.com, she led in all 11 swing states. Der Trumperer was ahead or close in several states before his, uh, “microphone issues.”) Do you know what this horrible Achilles heel is? That’s right – millennials! Bros in hoodies, baby. Oh, if only she could win them over, but they’re just too idealistic and lefty for her, and disagree with her on the issues. Writes Emmett Rensin of Newsweek, arguing his case:

The liberal punditry might be forgiven for underestimating the depth and seriousness of these differences had these young people not voted overwhelmingly and across all other demographic lines for a different candidate. The Clinton campaign might be forgiven for imagining these voters would “come home” had it not spent the weeks since the Democratic Convention fundraising and playing Bush administration endorsement bingo. The trouble is not that young people are insufficiently familiar with the neoconservative horror show of their own childhoods. The trouble is that the candidate they are meant to support does not appear to find that show particularly horrifying.

Indeed it is difficult not to imagine that the punditry has refused to endorse the maddeningly simple conclusion that young voters are reluctant to support a candidate who does not represent their policy preferences because such a conclusion might undermine the need for so much well-compensated armchair psychology on their part.

Bzzzzzt! Sorry, Mr. Rensin, but if that were true, Gary Johnson would not have blipped on their radar. A guy who favors the dismantling of the government so that the “invisible hand of the free market” can reach into their pockets and take everything they have, does not actually qualify as more liberal than HRC. And during the primaries, let’s not forget that the BernieBros swarmed the Interwebz with an avalanche of misogynistic rhetoric Drumpf would have approved of heartily. These malicious, misinformed sexists do not get a pass from me because they are young and easily led around by their teeny tiny pee-pees.  Nor does the typical Brogressive bullsh*t of calling HRC a neocon play well with me. That’s just an excuse for not voting for her because she’s a woman – they had no problem whatsoever with Obama’s foreign policy, which was no different than hers, except that he never had an opportunity to vote for the AUMF, and rode that fortuitous timing all the way to the White House.

Are we sensing a theme here?

Still, again and for as long as they can, men are pushing HRC and her supporters to the back of the bus. (Yes, I said it. Deal with it.) The fact that Republican and moderate women are going for her doesn’t help her – only those young, “idealistic” millennial men can take her to the White House? Except, not so much, since there are 69 million millennial voters (who vote in astonishingly low numbers), and in 2014, there were 76 million female registered voters. (This was 66% of the citizen population.) As we all know, especially after the latest Machado hatefilled tweetfest, women massively favor Clinton. Even if all the millennials came out and voted, there still wouldn’t be the potential there that 100% of registered female turnout would offer. And yet no one can believe that we should be as assiduously courted as those graced with that famous scrap of flesh between their legs. Why should anyone care about us? We’re only wimminz, just like Hillary. To quote New York’s Nosferatu, Rudy NineEleven:

Speaking of reports that Donald Trump claimed a $916 million loss on his 1995 income taxes, Giuliani said: “Don’t you think a man who has this kind of economic genius is a lot better for the United States than a woman, [bolding mine] and the only thing she’s ever produced is a lot of work for the FBI checking out her emails?”

Note that strategically placed comma, folks? Just like all of Clinton’s outstanding public service for the past 40 years, Hillary Clinton’s gender defines her in the eyes of a lot of American men of all political persuasions. And, it makes her invisible. How ironic that her ad of 2008, which I still remember today, is now applying to not just her supporters, but herself.

I can’t wait for November 8th. When all those non-existent women come out to vote for HRC, all this will change; not immediately, but irrevocably, and for all time.

This is an open thread.

Good Monday, all! If you read the headlines these days, the press seems to be behaving much better when it comes to Der Trumperer, actually finding, somewhere deep within their ADD-impaired noggins, the capability to focus on his overall awfulness instead of pounding on Hillary incessantly for not paying enough attention to them while dizzy and passing out from pneumonia. (Mommy issues, anyone?) See this “Many Scandals of Donald Trump” article in The Atlantic as an example. Well, see it if you want to experience a degree of boiling rage and nausea you haven’t experienced since you realized that yes, the Republicans were really, truly, f*cking srlsly going to let that mango-colored monkey run against Hillary Clinton. It turns out that Drumpf’s scandals are so numerous, The Atlantic complains it doesn’t have enough space on its pages to write all of them down. Poor babies! If I were a journalist and not a blogger, I might suggest that The Atlantic report on one scandal a day until November 7th. I guess that is just too much Hard Work(TM) for those with journamalism degrees!

In any case, the press is starting to focus its relentlessly negative eye where it belongs, on Dangerous, Despotic, Deplorable Donald. Does this mean they finally get the seriousness of this race? That they have understood the perils of their stunning lack of objectivity and “grading on a curve” when it comes to the pseudo-billionaire who has the overwhelming hubris to think he’s got what it takes to run for President?

Um, no.

If the press “corpse” is to revive itself, it needs to do something it hasn’t yet done, and hasn’t been able to do for the past 40 years: Report objectively on Hillary Clinton. Report on her qualifications, her policies and whether or not they would be good for America; report on what she would do if/when in office. Maybe even cover one of her speeches every once in a while. You know – exactly what they do with Drumpf.

They are showing a few signs of being able to do this. From the article linked above:

The investigation [into his charitable giving] is a new political headache for Trump. The Republican has sought to make hay out of accusations against the Clinton Foundation, but so far that group has no legal troubles. Trump’s charity, however, now finds itself in legal jeopardy.

A truthful and factual comparison! The Clinton Foundation hasn’t done anything illegal, whereas Trump’s Foundation is now under investigation. Could it be The Atlantic has re-discovered what the word “objective” actually means? Not so fast:

The 2016 presidential election could be the most scandal-plagued match-up since James Blaine’s allegedly corrupt business deals squared off against Grover Cleveland’s alleged illegitimate child in 1884. On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton is the nominee, bringing with her a train-car’s worth of baggage. But the Republican candidate is at least as saddled with controversy as Clinton is—and while many of the Clinton cases involve suspicion and shadowy links, many of Trump’s are fully documented in court cases and legal proceedings.

[facepalm]

No, no, NO. Here’s what’s wrong with this allegedly “fair and balanced” paragraph:

  1. Hillary is not bringing baggage with her. Here’s how I’d write this sentence: “The media is dumping sh*t on her daily, and Hillary has been forced to carry it for the past 40 years.” That is not remotely the same thing. Her worst sin is that she hasn’t found a way to get the media to stop lying about her, for which they, of course, blame her as well. (More on that a bit later.)
  2. Saying “many of the Clinton cases involve suspicion and shadowy links” does not pass the smell test. In fact, ALL of the Clinton cases are nothing but innuendo. I’m going to say that again. ALL OF THE CLINTON CASES ARE NOTHING BUT INNUENDO. There is no evidence that Hillary Clinton has ever done anything wrong or illegal. Ever. So despite the media’s gleeful daily exercise of picking apart every single participle she’s ever dangled, searching for evil conspiracies, corruption, and most likely a vagina dentata, there’s “no there there.” And I don’t think there ever will be, frankly. Hillary’s just not that kind of girl.

To follow up on #1, here is my favorite thing the media does when it comes to HRC: continue to talk about a non-story that originated out of some malarial Republican’s nightmare every day, no matter whether there are “new developments” or not, and then say something like this: “Why is it that she can’t stop us from talking about this?” For example: the “d*mned emails” Bernie Sanders complained about. She has been tried and convicted in the press for being reckless and careless and not trustworthy with national security because…she had a private email server from which she sent a grand total of zero emails which were correctly marked as classified. How utterly absurd. Yet because she hasn’t said some kind of magic word, given enough press conferences, and/or apologized on bended knee to the press while self-flagellating for being an uppity wimminz, the press feels justified in yammering about this bullsh*t as if it’s real, and comparing it to actual Dangerous, Despotic and Deplorable things The Donald has said and done.

So until the media purges itself of its toxic, misogynistic hatred of Hillary Clinton, they’re still never going to get it. And this pathetic farce of an election will continue to be reported as though two equally despicable candidates are running, with equal negatives, instead of one amazing, inspiring public servant versus a putrid pustule of a human being.

This is an open thread.

Goooooooooood Monday, all! I feel like I’ve been away for a century. While I’ve been closing on my house, moving (oy! the boxes!) and working on outstanding family issues, Dumpf as a Stumpf Drumpf has imploded most spectacularly, while Our Girl, Tim Kaine and the Democratic Party have enjoyed a huge bump in popularity since the convention in Philadelphia.

The media, addicted to false equivalencies and afflicted with an incurable case of CDS for the past 25 years, has insisted on reporting as though the two candidates are equally qualified to be President, and you know, all Drumpf needs to do is “get back on message.” Unfortunately for those desperate for a horse race instead of an unprecedented electoral drubbing, I don’t know how he can get back to something when he was never there to begin with; the whole reason that the Gibbering Orangutan is the nominee is that he never said anything the establishment wanted him to. Why should he start now? Even his obviously insincere endorsement of Ayotte, McCain and Ryan doesn’t signal a real change. The guy is incapable of thinking of anyone but himself, and very soon, he will take another sh*t on the American political carpet because of some imagined slight to his oh-so-fragile ego. By the time you read this, it may have already happened.

But I digress. (Quelle surprise.) The point I’m about to make is that the American people are not buying what the media is selling, and thanks to a new ABC poll, the “honest and trustworthy” meme against Hillary has been blown out of the water.

First of all, there has never been any proof that people will always vote for the candidate they think is the most honest and/or trustworthy. For example, Jimmy Carter was widely perceived as honest, but no one wanted his honesty. They wanted Raygun’s “Morning in America” optimism. So the entire kerfuffle about Hillary’s alleged dishonesty is somewhat irrelevant.

I would say these numbers are a bit more important. From the article linked above:

Trump appears to have done little to improve his overall image, despite efforts primarily by his children to use their convention speeches to portray him as a loving father and a successful business executive. Almost 6 in 10 voters say he is not qualified to be president, unchanged from before his convention, and 3 in 10 say they would feel comfortable if he were to become president. (bolding mine)

In other words, according to this poll, between 60% and 70% of Americans would not feel comfortable with Drumpf as President, and, they feel that he’s not qualified for the job.

But wait, there’s more:

Meanwhile, roughly 6 in 10 say [Clinton] is qualified to be president, and 44 percent say they would feel comfortable if she were to become president, compared with 54 percent who say they would feel anxious.

There are also the demographics: Hillary crushes Drumpf among all the key voting blocs: women, African-Americans and Hispanics. That mango-colored monkey can’t even muster up a majority amongst Republican women. And, Hillary’s negatives went way down after the convention. My guess is some of those women migrated over to the Bright Side.

So what does this mean for Activist Monday? Everything is looking extremely positive for Our Girl right now, while Drumpf is sinking like a stone. So why is Hillary’s campaign sending us four emails a day, asking for money, notifying us about the latest Republican stupidities, and generally asking if we’re with her?

Simply speaking: She needs your vote.

I know, I know. She has an extraordinary opportunity to unify the country after the hideous spectacle of the right-wing’s cartoonish nominee, crashing around like a bull in a china shop, angering and disgusting a majority of Americans with his insensitivity and insults. Not just battleground states, but even deep red states like Georgia have the potential to go her way. Because of this, money for advertising will definitely help her in that mission, and it’s good to send it if you have some extra.

But in the end, it’s all about the votes. So talk to your friends, post on social media, phone bank, offer to drive people to the polls on Election Day. Spread the word and get out the vote! The bottom line is, there are more sane Americans than crazy ones, and if we all turn out and throw that lever for Hillary, Drumpf doesn’t have a chance.

It’s the best thing you can do.
