Lazy Weekend: Stupid is as Stupid Does

Posted on: June 6, 2021

Shinners, I still believe Sinema and Manchin will do the right thing about the filibuster in the end, hopefully by Labor Day. After all, their re-elections depend on Democrats in their states being able to vote. But man, it is totally infuriating to see them dig in and act so idiotic about their Republican colleagues, who only got all those judges (including the Supreme Court justices) passed through because they amended the filibuster. Worshiping at the altar of bi-partisanship while the opposition Party has become fascist and traitorous, is nothing short of brain-dead. And I do credit Manchin and Sinema with, at least, the instinct to politically survive.

The frustration with these Senators is not only coming from progressives, liberals and Joe Biden. It’s coming from former GOP as well.

Former Arizona Attorney General Grant Woods urged Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) and Senator Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.) to agree to kill the filibuster or resign from office on Friday.

Sinema and Manchin have both faced heavy criticism for the opposition to eliminate or change the rule, which effectively requires most bills to have the support of 60 senators in a chamber that is currently split 50-50. Republicans used the rule for the first time in the Senate‘s current session last week to block the formation of a bipartisan commission to investigate the violent January 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol.

Woods, who served as Arizona’s Republican attorney general from 1991 to 1999, was a prominent backer of Sinema’s 2018 Senate campaign after switching parties during the same year. He now says that both Sinema and Manchin no longer belong in office if they remain unwilling to kill the filibuster in order to pass Democratic voting rights legislation.

“I do think that Sen. Sinema and every senator should support ending the filibuster for the voting rights bill,” Woods told HuffPost on Friday. “To keep the Jim Crow filibuster while losing some of these basic voting rights that are central to our democracy is preposterous.”

I know that Sinema and Manchin aren’t dumb, and I continue to hope this adherence to a racist and dangerous Senate rule is a clown show meant to impress their conservative voters in Arizona and West Virginia. But as Forrest Gump would say, Stupid is as Stupid Does. Right now, the stoopid – it burnssssss.

Feel free to post any songs that remind you of stupidity. Open thread, as always!

I’m way more cynical than you. (Well, we knew that 😆 ) I can’t see how the Look At Me Duo could have enough smarts for professional politics and be dumb enough to think the Repubs have any short term agenda besides getting voters to hate Dems.

Manchin has already got a $100,000+ per year job for his wife by sitting on his fence. Now I’m sure he’s looking surprised and saying, “Yeah, but what have you done for me lately?” Who knows what Sinema is angling for but somehow she strikes me as even more self-serving.

They need to be quashed. Hard. Because it’s only a matter of time before other Dem senators start thinking, “Well, gee. I could be getting Good Stuff too if I was more of a slimepit.”

As to how to quash them? I know nothing about Sinema, but one of her big backers in AZ came out and told her to fly right. Donors are probably her weak spot. And Manchin’s got his Epi-pen daughter whose misdeeds could be publicized. Something.

My glass is not half full on Manchin. Because of him, nothing gets passed or has to be diluted to near worthless.

I would call his bluff and Dems need to do what is right for the majority of the American people and let Manchin take his ball/s and go home.

Thanks for the new post MB, and have a great time with your family and friends that are vaxed.

Meghan and Harry welcome baby girl, Lilibet Diana.

How sweet, their baby is named after the Queen and Lady Diana.

I just thought of an even worse reason for the two UFOs (Unreliable Frivolous Opportunists) to be pro-filibuster. Maybe it really is based on their convictions. They actually want the racist outcome.

Maybe then the tack to take is to threaten them with Stacey Abrams-style federally funded get out the vote campaigns in their states?

I think Biden needs to start studying LBJ, not FDR. LBJ was the master at getting legislation passed. How would he deal with Manchin?

I still think Manchin hasn’t blocked a single Democratic effort once all the Dems are on board. Actually that is his history. So the idea that he would shoot himself in the foot by going against Biden rally doesn’t track for me.

Almost time for Dad’s wedding…

What are you saying, mb? As far as I know, all the Dems are (officially) on board with voting rights (for instance). (Also infrastructure? Not sure.) There’s just two UFOs who can’t bear the thought of hurting anyone’s feelings by breaking the filibuster. So you’re saying that’s the hold up? If Sinema was willing to break it, then Manchin would get on board?

Doesn’t seem likely, or I’m misunderstanding you.

Hey Quixote! Sorry for the late response. Yes, fast typing in the car doesn’t lend itself to clarity!

Here’s what I’m thinking. Manchin thinks he can get 10 Republicans to vote with the Democrats on S1. He’s full of spit and vinegar and has the confidence of a mediocre white man. 🙂 But of course, it won’t happen when Schumer puts it up for a vote.

So what will he and Sinema do then? Will they be holding out for a filibuster when it’s clear they can’t make progress without it – and their careers are on the line?

I don’t think so. They are, in the end, Democrats who will vote the party line and won’t go against the President. There is literally not a single reason for them to do so once they have satisfied what they perceive to be their voters’ desire for bipartisanship.

Just my opinion 😀

I hope you’re right, mb!

Just saw something today which was on Maddow yesterday about the Koch crowd doing ads and videos in West Virginia “encouraging” Manchin not to fall for any “partisan” stuff in DC that might affect Koch profits. (Well, the last bit is me talking.)

I seem to remember that sensitive gent getting mighty bent out of shape when Kamala went on TV is WV. The nerve. Talking directly to the locals without including him! But Koch ads are apparently okay. :green sick face here:

@11 – yes, a WV Den is kind of a miracle. He has to do a delicate dance to keep his seat, a lot of which is quite revolting to our sensibilities!!

Good thread.

I’ll have what MB is having.

@14 – hahaha Beata!

I like this woman.

@13. From what I hear, voting rights have to pass before September to be in time to change the amount of stealing Repubs can do in Nov 2022.

That’s why they need to pass now now now.

Because we’re already at the point where Democrats need an 8%+ majority just to barely get to even in Congress and that target is not stationary. By 2022 it could easily be 10%. At some point, it doesn’t matter how many voting rights laws you pass. Look at Russia. They have great laws.

If voting rights can pass later and still take effect for ’22, then that relaxed attitude could work. I’ll go read that thread. Hopefully, I’ll come back all reassured 😆

Even if that’s true Quixote, that means they have to pass before September…not now now now.

About time!

The developer of the Keystone XL pipeline announced Wednesday it is pulling the plug on the controversial project after the Biden administration revoked its permit in January.

That’s awesome, Shadow!!! Fantastic news.

Fusspot 😆 Admit it, in congress-time, September is now now now. It might even have been back in March!

It was in March.

Did you all know LBJ once grabbed Humphrey and nearly broke his arm in order to “persuade” him to support civil and voting rights legislation? Yes, he did.

Not that I approve of such tactics, of course.

@21 hee hee hee

I did say I think it will happen by September. 😜

Beata, of course you don’t. Heaven forbid!

(DYB, don’t know if you’re checking here, but I saw your twitter feed about fume hoods. The wall option assumes a vent going straight back then up. It can’t go *down* because heat rises. You’d have to have some sort of pumping system to force the hot air down. At least that’s my understanding. Who knows. Get a seconbd opinion?)

I just tried to explain to my SO why I do the things I do by telling him, “Birds gotta fly, swish gotta fim”.

It’s gonna be one of those days when English is not my first language.

Beata, as long as you don’t put food on your family, you’re still ahead of the game.

Hey Beata! Read about your reaction to J&J on last thread. I also had an unpleasant one, stroke like symptoms. Hubs took me to ER and I was in the hospital 2 days. I feel better now, had bad headaches for a couple of weeks. I have Type A blood, and I’ve read that A’s can have a harder time with the vaccines.

MB, hope you’re right about Sinema & Manchin. Love your positive attitude though!

@27, Ooops, as I was catching up on threads and comments and forgot that you already knew about my reaction. I hope you’re doing better. I was also wondering if I should go with Pfizer when its time for a booster shot.

MB, that’s nice about your Dad. I also had two stepmoms!

@30 – Annie, that is very interesting. My first stepmom was evil – this one isn’t. Thankfully my mom survived till I was almost 30, so I didn’t need mothering from either stepmom.

I had an evil stepmother starting when I was 3 years old. She had been my father’s secretary and began an affair with him when my mother was pregnant with me, which led to my parents’ divorce. She was a horrible, horrible woman. Conniving, mean and incredibly selfish. Died a few years ago. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Annie, it’s good to see you! I’m glad you are feeling better.

I’m definitely getting the Pfizer if I need a booster. No more J&J for me. I’ve already discussed it with my doctor.

Interesting about the blood type. I don’t even know what my blood type is!

@32 – Beata, that is terrible. So sorry to hear you went through that.

My evil stepmother was also conniving and awful. Somehow men just love her. My dad was with her for 20 years, and he and I didn’t speak for about 2 of them because she was lying about me and poisoning him against me. She was an emotional abuser and a thief who bankrupted my father twice. I did my best to bond with her after Dad and I began talking again, but I never trusted her. I was ecstatic when they divorced.

I’m assuming we’ve all heard about the fact that Drumpf was spying on Democrats? Watergate, anyone?

Spying on Democrats? Pffft. Bernie Sanders was spying on Democrats in 2016. (He was doing *exactly* Watergate on Clinton, except using computers, so nobody cared. Not sure why nobody cared. Maybe because it was against HIllary.) And then there was a repeat against Kamala Harris in 2020, if I remember right.

Seriously, though. Yes, it’s bad. But on the background of the Dump’s general criming, it’s a bit like getting Charles Manson for double parking. Or, I guess, Al Capone for tax evasion. Whatever works.

This article is interesting about women having stronger reactions to all the Covid vaccines.
————
(snip)
“A reportTrusted Source released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that of the first 13.8 million COVID-19 vaccine doses given to Americans, reports of side effects were coming at a higher rate from females.

In fact, 79 percent of side effects reported came from women, although only 61 percent of the vaccines were given to women.

A common occurrence
The study results aren’t concerning to infectious disease experts.

They point out that a stronger response from women to other vaccinations has been seen for years.

The reason?

Experts suspect that in women, particularly premenopausal women, the levels of estrogen help activate the immune response to illness and, therefore, to vaccines.

Men, on the other hand, have more testosterone, a hormone that can somewhat dampen or slow down the same response.

Simply put, women in general have a stronger response to vaccines because their bodies are quicker and stronger when it comes to activating what the vaccine introduces in the body.”

Ha! I knew we were the stronger sex, Shadow! 😀

Q – I hear you. And, I feel “whatever works” too!!

I think it’s great that Dr. ‘B’ is wearing a jacket that is blinged out with the word, ‘LOVE’ on the back. Counteracting the ‘I’m a rich bitch and I don’t give a shit’, jacket that Melania wore when she visited England with her Basket of blubber.

Dr. Biden is so classy! She was at a school ( a preschool, I think ) with Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, today. They seemed so comfortable with each other and with the children. What a breath of fresh air! The BBC pointed out that it is rare for any of the royals to appear in public with a political figure from a foreign country ( in this case, our First Lady ) but Kate did. I think that says something about the respect the UK has for the Bidens.

@40: It was a preschool for children who have experienced trauma.

MB, sorry your first one was so mean. In my case, the first stepmom was the nicest. The second one was awful, I begged my Dad not to marry her, but he did anyway. We all tried to make the best of it, but she got meaner every year. Then abusive, and my sister and I insisted they break up. What a nightmare it was. I only had one stepdad and he was cool.

Beata @32, that’s awful! So sorry you had to endure that.

It’s funny how different people living different lives can still have so many things in common.

Oh, love Dr. Jill and thought her jacket was great! Her looks (especially when she was young) remind me of my big sister who was a pretty blue eyed blonde.

Thanks Annie! Sorry you had an evil step mom too. Jeez.

Dr. Jill is really terrific. I feel like she is Biden’s secret weapon. Loved her beautiful jacket and the pix of the G7 are so refreshing. Everyone is smiling and relaxed and happy that a real leader is back in the White House.

@44, I noticed the same thing, everyone there happy to have the Biden’s after four years of the nightmare couple.

I don’t know what to think of Manchin. I will always admire his ability to get elected as a Democrat in WV. I understand just how impossible that is. Living in Kansas, where we have not elected a Democrat to the Senate in 60 plus years at least. And those GOP goose steppers have always voted the party line. Always. Good Nazis. And I’m guessing the average IQ is about 10 points higher here in KS compared to WV. So it’s amazing to me. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. Manchin has a working eye, whereas in KS, we have no such man. He has to be the greatest politician that ever lived – right behind Bill Clinton – who started out as the one-eyed man in Arkansas.

It’s very depressing to me though – Manchin and Sinema hanging on to the rotting branch of white male supremacy. Let it go!

I’m still trying to have fun where I can. I keep talking about how Trump is the white trash wet dream – from the trailer parks to the mansions – all white trash – because it’s a mental state, not a financial one. Trump will always be the white trash king because he’s the best at selling the lie. (and logically, and just logically, speaking, y’all need to find better representatives if you’re going to sell this BS because please – and yikes – reminds me of the “superior” specimens of Hitler, Goebbels, Goring, etc. gawd).

But of course, I say, I’m not talking about “you”.

I think Jon Tester is the crème de la crème of one-eyed men. He’s the best. Doing the impossible and never wavering. A humble, rock solid icon in a sea of shit. How does he do that?

It’s not unusual for a Democrat to be elected to the Senate from WV. Sen. Robert Byrd (D) served WV from 1959-2010. When Byrd died, Joe Manchin won his seat in 2010 and has held it since. Jennings Randolph (D) served in the Senate from 1959-1985. After Randolph retired, John D.(Jay) Rockefeller (D) succeeded him, serving from 1985-2014. So in recent times, having a Republican senator from WV is actually quite rare.

Oh Manchin, twitterers suggest when Manchin retires, chances of a Democrat holding that seat are slim. He was a WV AG and then Governor, so those things seem to be working in his favor. But isn’t WV the reddest state right now? Or something close. Some even argue his votes to convict Trump twice may mean him losing his next election. Personally I don’t know enough about WV politics.

Was Byrd more liberal than Manchin?

@24 quixote…my research on the vented hoods is that sending it down IS possible, if the hood has a strong enough motor. One of my neighbors has it done that way, I found out. So…that’s what I’m gonna do. I don’t really have an option on that, there is no way to send it up.

Beata, didn’t LBJ have a Democratic super majority in the Senate?

Meanwhile this story about Trump DOJ (Sessions/Barr/Rosenstein) subpoenaing phone/data records from Democratic members of Congress is appalling. All 3 a-holes – Sessions/Barr/Rosenstein – say they didn’t know. Which is not believable. There is zero chance some random prosecutor in DOJ subpoenaed data/phone records (and slapped Apple & Microsoft with gag orders), from Democratic lawmakers in secret from leadership.

@51: Prolly. Don’t know off the top of my head and I’ve already done my research for the night!

It’s good to see you, D.

Sounds like it should work, DYB. The hood is acting as the pump. And if your neighbor has that situation, then she/he should be a mine of information 🙂

Re Manchin, Sinema, Feinstein! 😯 , etc etc. Part of me, a growing part, is just sick that the Dems are letting the one chance to fix things slip away. Because we have all these prima donnas who are, there’s no polite way to put this, self-serving gumballs.

I can’t do links anymore ’cause my ‘puter is drek but Andy Borowitz has a good satire in The New Yorker entitled “Susan Collins Sad That Joe Manchin Has Replaced Her As Most Annoying Senator”.

Borowitz has Manchin saying, “I’ve been a big fan of Susan Collins’ work as a vexing time-waster for as long as I can remember. In terms of being infuriating, she has set the bar very, very high for me.”

LBJ did have a Democratic supermajority but a lot of them were Blue Dog Dems. So he had that to contend with.

My mother never forgave LBJ for picking up his beagle by the ears. She was a beagle lover. She used to say she never wanted kids, she wanted beagles.

I’m thinking of changing my online name to “Vexing Time-Waster”.

It has a certain ring to it.

Borowitz is the best. I just wish he wasn’t also merely factually reporting events! It’s all too true.

A rose by any other name, would smell the same. The same can be said of shit.

Call it Democrat or Republican. WVians love the smell/taste of shit. Can’t get enough of it. They don’t care what you call it. They’ll vote for shit, 9 times out of 10.

So again… Manchin is not shit. I know that. And he still gets elected. Out of a maggot/shit loving shit pile. That’s amazing.

Hi D and PJ! Great to see you.

@55 – Beata, that’s hilarious! Here’s the link.

https://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-report/susan-collins-sad-that-joe-manchin-has-replaced-her-as-most-annoying-senator

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Senator Susan Collins said that she is “a little bit sad” to see Senator Joe Manchin replace her as the nation’s most annoying senator.

“For years, I’ve been the most aggravating person in this legislative chamber, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,” she said. “Still, if an obscure senator from Maine can’t wield outsized power anymore, it’s only fitting that the baton be passed to an obscure senator from West Virginia.”

[snip]

In an official response to her remarks, Manchin said, “I’ve been a big fan of Susan Collins’s work as a vexing time-waster for as long as I can remember. In terms of being infuriating, she has set the bar very, very high for me.”
