The Widdershins

Posted on: September 6, 2020

Is it correct to say that?  I’m not sure but I’m going to anyway.  I can say I hope you enjoy your day, whether you are at the beach, or you are having a barbecue or what have you. I also hope you are celebrating safely, six feet apart from strangers, and away from Trump boats on the water.

However, let’s not forget the reason we celebrate the day.

In the United States, Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country.

In many countries, the working classes sought to make May Day an official holiday, and their efforts largely succeeded. In the United States and Canada, however, the official holiday for workers is Labor Day in September. This day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, who organized the first parade in New York City. After the Haymarket Massacre, US President Grover Cleveland feared that commemorating Labor Day on May 1 could become an opportunity to commemorate the affair. Thus, in 1887, it was established as an official holiday in September to support the Labor Day that the Knights favored.

n 1882, Matthew Maguire, a machinist, first proposed the holiday while serving as secretary of the CLU (Central Labor Union) of New York. Others argue that it was first proposed by Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor in May 1882,after witnessing the annual labour festival held in Toronto, Canada.

Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday on February 21, 1887. By the time it became a federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day

Following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, the United States Congress unanimously voted to approve rush legislation that made Labor Day a national holiday; President Grover Cleveland signed it into law a mere six days after the end of the strike. The September date originally chosen by the CLU of New York and observed by many of the nation’s trade unions for the past several years was selected rather than the more widespread International Workers’ Day because Cleveland was concerned that observance of the latter would be associated with the nascent Communist, Syndicalist and Anarchist movements that, though distinct from one another, had rallied to commemorate the Haymarket Affair in International Workers’ Day All U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the territories have made it a statutory holiday.

Finally let’s celebrate with some songs

Enjoy the day and long weekend Widdershins.  If you are going out to celebrate, be safe!

Ok, wordpress was acting very strangely. The like, and the share this buttons weren’t there. I checked some older posts and it was the same way. Now they’re here. #2020

And I have no idea where these little stars for likes came from. Odd

This is a great article about Cedric Richmond the congressman from the 1st congressional district in La. Wish I lived in his district.

Cedric Richmond will be ‘a big deal’ in Washington if Joe Biden wins presidency; here’s why

Some interesting news out of covid research. It could be they’ve been focusing on the wrong part of the network of regulators the virus attacks. ACE2 is what it latches on to, but excess bradykinin actually accounts for most of the symptoms, including the deadly ones. (Article: …therapeutic interventions for COVID-19 involving a RAS-mediated bradykinin storm)

The good news is that bradykinin, being part of the body’s blood pressure regulating system, already has a number of approved drugs to deal with overproduction. And early indications are that they help.

It would another cause for celebration, in addition to Labor Day 😀 , if we finally turned the corner on this horrible disease.

Link to a more accessible article on the same topic: here.

Weird about the stars; I know some people have had the ability to “Like” posts, but this is the first time I’ve had the option.

Also speaking of Labor Day, this woman deserves what she’s about to do for her labor.

Funny Trump story from Charlie Sheen. I mean, if Charlie Sheen thinks you’re a scumbag…

So USPS Postmaster DeJoy is being accused by former employees of being bullied into contributing to his campaigns and then being reimbursed by DeJoy’s company through bonuses. This is a crime.

@5: See my first comment. I’ll try to fix it tomorrow when I can check it out more.

New rule…No more presidents who golf. It is offensive (and I am actually being serious here). They need breaks from the pressure (I understand that), but it gives the appearance of not giving a shit. Fiddling while Rome burns. They need to do their relaxation activities in private.

(Re my comment about the boaters in the last post: the article I read applied to the Willamette near Portland. There were many more boats involved, including the on fire one DYB posted!, at Lake Travis near Austin and a third location. Apparently, swamping smaller boats because you’re stupid is a Trumpy thing. Who knew?)

Do you remember Julie Briskman? The lady who flipped off the Trump motorcade as he was going to or coming from yet ANOTHER golfing trip? She had just had it. She got FIRED for that. But she came out ok…

Briskman was later elected to the Algonkian District seat of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors. “Fabulous Revenge” is what the Washington Post called it.

Even W had enough sense to stop playing golf during a crisis.

Trump’s pants are looking very wrinkly lately. Where is his ‘calming goat’ Hope Hicks to steam his pants? I thought she was back on duty…

@10, Swamping those small loser boats because you can is the Trump way!

I can see the ‘like’ stars too, and they’re rather annoying IMO.

@3, 4, thanks for the links, q. (goes off to read)

Some MS meds are B-cell modulators and have been theorized to help prevent cytokine storm.

@7, Dejoy committing a crime? Quelle surprise’. He’s a Trump pick.

Happy Labor Day all! It’s my birthday. The likes are really odd…I can’t seem to Like Fredster’s post, but I was able to Like PJ’s comment!

This was a great birthday present. Charles Darwin is giggling like mad.

@19, 😆 !

madamab, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! (Well, a bit late, but it’s the thought that counts.)

Fredster, Great post & check your email.

@15: I did that just to irritate you Luna. 😉

When I was writing and previewing the post the the “share” buttons weren’t showing nor the blog “like”. So I went into the admin side and was looking for “like” things. That enabled the comment like by my mistake. It should be gone now.

Also, I’ve been having some issues with Firefox. Going to their support their response is almost always “uninstall and then reinstall Firefox”.
Really? What about this ton of bookmarks I have?

Oh, and the comment likes should be gone now.

@21: Will do annie.

Quixote, thanks for the encouraging news about the virus.

MB, Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns! I hope you’re settling well into your new home. Do you like the new area?

Maybe its the Greek in me, but I love that Charles Pierce tweet!

Oh good, those like things are gone! Good job, Fredster!

@26: That’s what happens when you are working on your post at 3 a.m. LOL

LOL, they are running his campaign the way he ran his casinos; badly.

Trump’s campaign loses billion dollar advantage.

Happy Birthday MB and happy labor day to all.

When I say the Arlo Guthrie above, I just couldn’t help myself…I love this song.

I think it’s the mythology student in me who liked the Poseidon tweet! (goes off singing “Give me that old time religion, that old time religion, Poseidon sunk the Trump boats, and that’s good enough for me!”

@28, oh, I hope he goes bankrupt again running for a 2nd term!

And this about ‘donor mementos’ — LOL! (snicker)

Just procuring the Trump paraphernalia that supporters buy costs a lot. Two firms that make campaign swag were paid more than $30 million combined since 2019.

At Mr. Trump’s direction, the party has taken a spare-no-expense approach to donor maintenance, with the R.N.C. spending more than $6 million in “donor mementos.”

Fredster, re the Firefox bookmarks: If you go to Organize Bookmarks, there’s an Import and Backup menu choice. You can backup in .json format to keep all tags, descriptions, etc. Put it somewhere where you can find it again. Then when they all get lost, you go to the same menu choice, select Import, and everything should be there.

@34, q, thanks for that tip!

@34: Oh thanks q! I’m big on thumb drives, aka USB drives. I’ll find one that’s relatively uncluttered and make a separate folder to put that in.

@33: I swear he and the kids (thinking Junior) are running this campaign like their promoting their latest building offering/scam or something.

And speaking of Junior, from his convention speech and a couple of other vids he looks like he is seriously coked up. I believe the offspring know (even if Daddy is in denial) that the grift stops in November. I saw someone mention on twitter that it will take Biden and Harris at least four years to try to undo all the shit he’s done.

@37: I agree! Junior is looking scarier than usual. He is rapidly losing what little mind he has.

And I also agree that it will take at least four years to clean up the mess! It’s going to take a year just to fumigate the White House. Then, maybe they can get to work on fixing the country.

@39: That is sickening Luna!

@39: The income divide is getting worse and worse in the country.

hey Shinners! thanks for the birthday wishes. it was a really nice birthday weekend!

It’s so disgusting how all the rich people are just using Coronavirus to hoover up more and more $$$ they didn’t earn.I think there’s an empathy removal operation that’s done after you’ve hit a certain level of wealth.

@43: Check your gmail acct please.

Everything they touch turns to …

At least he’s acknowledging it.

@46: Showtime has a two night thing coming on called “The Comey File” Obviously I won’t be bothering to watch it.

Fredster, is that the Comey movie? Yeah, hard pass. I’m giving myself a root canal.

@49: LOLOLOL, D.

@48: I was able to find that video on YouTube. That girl is so damn funny!!

@49: I guess it’s a Showtime movie or something. Here ya go:

Oh, and MIchael Cohen is going to be on Rachel tonight, fwiw.

Trump: I love WikiLeaks (2016)

Trump in 2019: “I know nothing about WikiLeaks. It’s not my thing and I know there is something having to do with Julian Assange (ok, so you DO know something about WikiLeaks…) Trump was embarrassed when Assange was hauled out of that embassy in London looking like the Unabomber. (snicker).

@51, Julian “it was consensual it was it was” Assange should be sent to Siberia and not to a nice little dacha either.

@49 – that was classic!

Drumpf only knows “the best people.” Believe him!!!

(8 weeks till we vote the MF out)

@57: Agree, Agree!!

@55: Fredster – I thought it was AWESOME!!

(8 weeks till we vote the MF out)

I am concerned about getting Trump out of the WH though after he loses. Squatters are very hard to get rid of…

@62 PJ> Personally I think Trump’s physical location is the least of our problems! Where he stays isn’t as important as that the results have to be definitive. He stops being President on Jan 21st. Then he will be escorted out of the White House if he refuses to go. I think the risk is (and we know this will happen) he will try to declare the results invalid. Which is why his loss has to be massive (on the Electoral College scale.) And then we have to worry about the following 2.5 months…

@60: So he never intended to win and become prez. And I liked the way Cohen described the possible way out of prosecution if he loses: he resigns and Pence pardons him all before the inauguration of Biden. I fully believe they have discussed that possibility.

@63: Excellent point, D. It’s what he would have done in 2016 if he had lost. And he let us all know that. “It’s rigged!”

Gawd he is disgusting.

@64: Absolutely. I believe it too.

@63: As an interesting aside to that D, I searched some things about the folks who protect him and others.

The part of the Sec. Srvc that protects the White House grounds is the Uniformed Division.

Also, interestingly the service also has a goodly number of veterans and prior LEO folks working there. Sooo, after all the nasty comments he’s made about veterans being suckers and losers, if he tries any shit after Jan. 21st or even Jan. 20th, I don’t believe there will be an issue with a number of those Sec. Svc (I didn’t want to abbreviate to SS!) who will be willing to escort him off the property. They can always park his ass in Blair House or better yet his own hotel in the district.

Sec. Svc and veterans:

Blair House:

@67: Good stuff Fredster! Thanks for the research. And your commentary. 🙂

The truth is – the only way Trump has *ever* ‘won’ anything is when he cheats. He cheats at everything. Golf, business, SATs, (elections!) etc.

When he loses, he wants to say it’s because OTHER people cheated against HIM…

I wonder if he believes his own bullshit. I think he does. He has a warped little pile of mush between his ears… Not to mention his corrupted heart and soul.

@69 – well said PJ!
