Activist Wednesday: The Kentucky Derby

Posted on: June 24, 2020

It’s a horse race!

Y’all, there’s been some drama in Kentucky. Yesterday there was a primary between a Justice Dem-backed candidate and Amy McGrath, the moderate fave who was starting to make headway over #MoscowMitch. As of the moment I’m posting, the race is too close to call. And, the expectation is that it won’t be called till June 30, due to the high preponderance of mail-in ballots.

Democratic enthusiasm for McGrath was high when she first entered the Senate race last year, and she raised $2.5 million in her first 24 hours. That enthusiasm quickly cooled when she said in an interview with The Courier-Journal, that “I probably would have voted “ to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who’s widely loathed by Democrats. She later tweeted that “upon further reflection and further understanding of his record, I would have voted no.”

McGrath continued her fundraising prowess, and as of June 3rd, had raised over $41 million, according to the most recent fundraising filings. She had to dip into that money for ads to fight off a late surge from Booker, who supports Medicare for All, the Green New Deal and Universal Basic Income and campaigned against inequality and racial injustice.

I don’t much care who is picked in the primary, as long as they are the right person to at least credibly challenge McConnell. Although Booker sounds like a Sanders ratfcker, I did see a different take from an allegedly native Kentuckian on the Tweet Machine. So who the h knows.

I think it would be absolutely delicious if #MoscowMitch loses his seat. But, when we take the Senate, I wonder if he’ll resign and write a book? I can see it now, “Life from the Turtle’s Nest: A Career in the Senate.” It will end up in the Koch Brothers’ warehouse with Kellyanne’s, Jared’s and Ivanka’s sad oeuvres.

Tawk amongst yerselves, Widdershins!

Booker was “endorsed” by Warren and Burnie. Stay the shit out of it you two.

We want someone who wins in the general against McConnell, right? Maybe I’m underestimating Kentucky, but does a Green New Dealer stand a chance?

And one thing I’ve wondered about: McGrath has been running for quite a while and doing well. So what’s the deal with this Booker guy? It feels like another case of “well, some woman is knocking herself out so nobody really is running so I’ll jump in.”

I haven’t kept track though. Maybe there’s some actual reason he felt he had to get in?

I agree — it’s a case of “Oh, who’s running so far? Lessee, a woman and …. no one yet; I’d better get in.”

McGrath’s a woman veteran who knows she swore to uphold the Constitution rather than a political leader. I’m fine with her looking further at Kavanaugh and giving him “No,” though I don’t know why she couldn’t have figured that out right off the bat. She damn well better win — any Sanders-supported candidate is going to fail in the general election.

@3: In this primary he’ll probably do well in Louisville-Jefferson county and Lexington-Fayette county. Outside of those two places I’m not sure.

I don’t think it’s so much a gender thing as it was that McGrath wasn’t “progressive” enough for some ppl.

I wonder if anyone has ever explained the concept of “Pyrrhic victory” to those folks?

so, basically, it’s what I feared: if Booker did get the nomination, it gets McConnell re-elected?

Hmph. That and his late start … has anybody checked for the Hand of Putin in all this? Seems fishy as hell.

Mood:

@6: Also, the EU is considering barring visitors from the United States from entering because we haven’t done enough to slow down the virus.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-eu/eu-countries-may-bar-u-s-travelers-because-of-coronavirus-failures-ny-times-idUSKBN23U2YQ

@7: Good chance of it. I almost wrote “don’t know how many *progressives* there are up in those hollers but hell I don’t even know how many Democrats of any stripe are there.

@9, I saw that. Ban away! Too many ‘Muricans think they’re impervious to covid-19.

@11: In a sad way it’s delightful.

Welcome to Drumpf’s Murca: our allies are scared of us and our enemies own us.

November cannot come fast enough.

And as for Booker, I feel like a black guy in Kentucky is going to get cremated in the general against McConnell. There, I said it.

@13. Quite possibly, although there are enough Repubs who love to have super-conservative blacks around to prove how unbigoted they (the Repubs) are. Isn’t there a black Repub senator from some place? South Carilina? Virginia?

But a black Green Dealer? I definitely can’t see it.

@14: Yes, his name is Tim Scott. McTurtle tasked him with writing the Senate version of their policing bill. It went exactly as far as you thought it would.

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/06/24/republican-police-reform-bill-senate-defeat-337639

q,did you ever check the email I sent you?

I cannot for the life of me understand black Republicans. It’s like being a pro-fishing fish.

(I did Fredster. Too much going on. Hence radio silence. Sorry!)

Pro-fishing fish is right!

Although in actual fact *nobody* really benefits from the grab-everything-in-sight mindset. Now that Repubs are a criminal enterprise, that description fits all their followers!

If Booker snags the nom, he’d damn well better win. Where did he come from, anyway? Amy’s been polling well against the turtle.

@18: Okie doke. Know what you’re going through so hang in there.

Had an email from Elizabeth Warren with subj. line “Can I give you a call?”

NO

Stuck inside, either by requirement or choice and now this.

Imma lose my mind.

@17, Lol! Yes.

@23, those state increases are …. well, let’s just say they could have been prevented, but no, because stupid.

From a satirical medical blog, and too close to the truth:

Karla Jensen, just one of the many hospital administrators comprising 34% of U.S. healthcare costs, sent a department-wide email yesterday in response to concerns about PPE shortage and pay cuts. While staff eagerly anticipated news of new masks, hazard pay, and protection of trainees, Jensen spent her morning making trendy TikTok coffee at home, organizing her sock drawer, and finally cleaning the garage. Then at around 1 p.m., she sat on the living room couch to type out her unit’s much-anticipated response to the COVID-19 pandemic, an excerpt of which is below:

“As you all know, we deeply care for you and your family’s health and wellness through this time. As such, we will be offering free Sharpies to write your family name on your N95 mask, which you may wear for the rest of the month or until your untimely death, in which case it will be passed on to your next of kin.

We hear your concerns about hazard pay, and to minimize stress through this time, we are here to assure you that we will not be providing it — so you can stop obsessing about it! If this doesn’t resolve your anxiety, please view Wellness Module 589 on the intranet for a brief yoga lesson.

Please remember that when you entered the honored profession, you did so at your own choice. We understand your student loans eventually took that choice away, and hope that the federal government forgives those or something. As always, your pay will be docked for the time you spent reading this email, which is a nonessential activity during this pandemic.”

@27 – is that true?! Damn! I’mma go eat a pizza. 😂😂😂

@25: And supposedly a number of the increases in numbers are among younger people.

The guv here as kept us at phase 2 for another month and some of the Repubs in the ledge are throwing a fit.

on Thursday, the unofficial U.S. COVID-19 tally reached 2,381,369 cases and 121,979 deaths — since Wednesday, up 34,267 (the biggest daily increase in more than 2 months) and 754, respectively.

California is one of the states seeing all-time highs in daily case counts. There were 7,149 new infections since Tuesday — a 69% increase in two days.

As cases in Texas also continue to spike, the mayor of Houston said the city’s hospitals were at 97% ICU capacity.

Turnabout is fair play: New York, New Jersey and Connecticut announced a mandatory 14-day quarantine for visitors from nine coronavirus hotspots — including Texas, Florida and Alabama — some of which had barred visitors from the Northeast when that was the national epicenter.

Somewhere today I read that yes, around half of the new cases are among younger people. Now where was that …

“As always, your pay will be docked for the time you spent reading this email, which is a nonessential activity during this pandemic”

Word. 😆

That whole it’s-not-really-a-spoof message: it’s funny because it’s true. Which also makes it way too painful.

Yes, I’ve seen that in several reports, median age of infected (not always symptomatic?) people has gone to about 35.

That really could be an effect of increased testing, if we’re picking up more asymptomatic people. So (Slavic Debbie Downer speaking here) just give it a couple of weeks to let them finish infecting their more careful older relatives, and that median age will go right back up again.

“…younger people are the leading edge of that transmission. “Young people, many newly mobile after months of lockdowns, have been getting tested more often in recent weeks and driving the surge in cases in the South and West”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/06/25/coronavirus-cases-10-times-larger/

Yay! And if Trump appeals, let’s hope SCOTUS doesn’t invalidate this ruling.

Yowser. NYT reports that the Kentucky count currently shows Booker leading! She was so far ahead of him, I figured that wouldn’t happen. NYT has stopped reporting how much of the vote has been counted. Tell me we’re not headed for six more years of McTurtle .

@35: From the Times piece it looks like a lot of counties are still not reporting.

@32: Here it appears a bunch of younger folks (18 and up) hit a number of bars in Tigerland near the LSU campus and some were kind enough to bring the thing back to nola. Also there were some graduation parties for Newman High School in uptown nola. That’s a very tony private school in uptown. Lesson from that: You can have all the money in the world to send your kid to a school like that and still be as dumb as a bag of rocks.

@40. Shocked. Not surprised, and yet still shocked.

I keep wondering what Putin has on him. And then I get flattened by the even worse thought that maybe he has nothing. Maybe this is really and truly just the Dump’s admiration for a bigger and better bully than he is.

Just saw this from a link to an AARP article

@43, Well, so the profiteers put some cheap toxic substance in their sanitizers. Not surprised.

@43 – The awfulness of 2020 continues unabated.

The Krugman speaketh: Drumpf and Rethugs are driving us into a massive economic ditch and pretending not to.

Krugman’s right. We’ll go into the 21st Century’s Great Depression in a few months.

@44: FDA says this company was adding methanol instead of ethyl alcohol to the products. These products are imported from Mexico.

@44 and 45: The horrifying thing is that it’s taken tRump and his minions less than a full term to put the country in this shape.

Weekend post up.
