The Widdershins

Cabin Fever Weekend

Posted on: April 18, 2020

Happy (?) weekend Widdershins

So as you can see from the top, we’ll call this one cabin fever weekend.  It really was one today because with several rounds of severe thunderstorms I really couldn’t even get out to do a bit of walking.  Bubba would not even come when it was dinner time and I had a nice Popeyes chicken breast that I tore apart for him.  So it’s back in the fridge and I’ll try later today (since it’s now Sunday).

For the scientifically inclined Widdershins, thinking of you Luna and Quixote, I saw this site mentioned on Maddow’s show.  It’s called the Covid-19 compiler. When you go to the first page you see a map of the entire U.S.  It allows you to hover over a particular county in each state to get info on the number of cases.  You can also look at demographic data and that allows you to drill down a bit further. Further, if you click on “Insights” it will give you a host of topics they have researched.  I looked it over a couple of times but honestly I just did not want to get even more depressed over this mess.

On to some music.

The following are just a couple of things I heard on the all music classical dealio on cable.  They sounded nice at the time so I jotted down the info for the pieces.

Okay shinners that’s all I got but just remember:

Take the discussion wherever you wish.

Yikes, Fredster. The first comment, plus the last pic. I guess that’ll take care of *me* for the rest of the day!

/*endless screaming*/

/*in no way your fault. I was doing it anyway*/

Love the post, Fredster. Hope you can get out soon! And also the Bingo card – forgot to mention that before!

This is a great Biden ad.

Grandma knows best.

@2: Oh I hope that didn’t do it for you q for the rest of the day. I especially had you and Luna in mind when I put in that compiler thing on the virus. But perhaps it’s more sociological than scientific.

And about that first comment: As the article says, at least family members can now see their loved ones before they pass and they can say their final farewells.

@4: I’m with Grandma. I dvr the local news, then also Maddow, O’Donnell and Brian Williams. Most of the time I get through Maddow and that’s it. Oh, also record Nicolle Wallace. But after Wallace and Maddow that’s about it. I just put the tv on either the classical music thing or something else that is pure escapism.

mb, probably no getting out today. We have the same setup as last weekend for severe weather. Heads up to GAgal because it looks like this stuff will go over the same areas once again: Ms/Bama and guess Ga also.

Love the music Fredster! The first track, Rameau, is one of my all-time favorites!

Georgy Sviridov is virtually unknown in the West, but some of his music is iconic in Russia (USSR.) He wrote a couple of gorgeous song-cycles for Dmitri Hvorostovsky late in life. This particular piece here, an excerpt from an orchestral suite, is one of the most famous pieces of music ever written – but only known in the USSR. The trumpet theme was used as the theme music for the 9pm news – everyone had to watch the 9pm news about collective farming and other fun topics.

I was reading some comments on youtube under it and some Russian guy wrote that he was about to go to bed and heard this piece and now he wants to conquer Berlin again.

@DYB, “iconic in Russia” Lol! I’m having problems visually reconciling Orthodox icons and Soviet news programs! Good to know about this composer. I certainly can hear why that work was chosen for the purpose.

Some good news!

Luna, here’s a minute or so of the Soviet news. He’s talking about Lebanese heroes fighting against Israeli occupiers. She talks about Reagan sending some emissary to the Middle East. This is as exciting as the Soviet news delivery got. Imagine about an hour of this every night. Must see TV.

@13: LOL, love President Reagan in Russian. Yeah in the 80s they definitely knew his name.

@10: I can see how that would make good “news” music.

@15, Every day now.

@16: Exactly!

Loved it! Yes, we will survive so we can get rid of this evil nitwit.

I love this…

Above ends up being the entire last SNL zoom show from home.

I hope this is the RGB workout from SNL…this is what I thought I was posting above.
If it ends up being the same video as on 21 above, I’m sorry and hope someone will delete it for me.

These are the people who will drink a bottle of vodka to kill the virus.

@30 – Is libety grain alcohol? They sure seem pickled.

Love that Biden ad!!

Here’s some good information from doctors about Coronavirus and how dangerous certain surfaces and activities really are. Turns out, there is less risk in some areas than people may have thought.

For example, I go outside walking every day. Turns out it is very safe to do under the social distancing rules.

@32 – I saw that MsMass. I am so in awe of their strength and sense of purpose!

Fredster, thankfully the storm was all south of us this time. The bingo card on the sidebar is great, but buy a ukulele? I will confess I watched the movie Contagion. As for TP, my sister is mailing us two packages she found at her grocery store because I can’t find any here. I’ve ordered some but it won’t arrive for a month.

I’m going to check out the covid- 19 compiler now. Thanks for that.

@36: GAgal, that’s good to hear about that storm. The worst was north of us and into Miss. We were fortunate again.

GAgal, I was and still am okay with the tp. However bleach has been another matter. So when I saw a three pack of Chlorox 1 gallon containers on Sams I ordered it. It’s being shipped UPS and I’ll have to offer a prayer to the shipping gawds that it arrives relatively undamaged. I really don’t want to deal with a damaged box of that!

@30, oh that’s definitely a Trumpist sign.

@36, No toilet paper for a month…. Are we tired of winning yet?

@38, Great Biden ad. Trump’s “I don’t take responsibility at all” statement is an attack ad all by itself.

I know I’ve been posting mostly grumpy, angry or irritable comments lately. Thanks to all for understanding.

Today is better; got out for a short hike to an area just on the east side of the Cascade Mtns, a south-facing ridge which melts off quickly in spring. Most was snow free, though there was still ~ 6+ feet of snow up on top. Saw some pretty wildflowers in bud and bloom:

Balsamroot, Balsamorhiza sagittata
Checkered lily, Fritillaria lanceolata
Glacier lily, Erythronium grandiflorum
Hazelnut, Corylus cornuta
Larkspur, Delphinium nuttallianum
Paintbrush, Castilleja miniata
Red flowering current, Ribes sanguineum
Shelton’s violet, Viola sheltonii
Spring beauty, Claytonia lanceolata
Tall Oregon-grape, Mahonia aquifolium
Trillium, Trillium ovatum
Vanilla-leaf, Achlys triphylla
Waterleaf, Hydrophyllum capitatum
Yellow bell, Fritillaria pudica

It was a real treat to find the Shelton’s violets – I’ve never seen them before and they have clumps of beautifully dissected blue-green leaves which look most un-violet-like. Quixote have you ever seen them?

No, I haven’t! It sounds gorgeous. I was getting dreamy just reading through the names of the beauties I have seen. Admire everything for all of us when you go again!

(mb, your yahoo news links don’t work for me. They just collapse to the front page. I don’t know if you need to be on a phone for them to work, or what. If there’s some other link you could also leave? That looks like an interesting article.)

Just watched that Biden ad. Yup. That’s a good one. Quite a punchline.

me@30: I swear I never knew they were into transvestites or transsexuals so much in North Carolina. Amazing what you can learn.

And this…this is why I really don’t bother with Joy Reid much anymore.

Hope y’all don’t mind…I am closing comments on this post, since my Activist Tuesday post is publishing in a few.
