The Widdershins

Happy New Year’s Eve Day, Widdershins! Yes, it’s that time of year when we all think about the year that was, and the year to come. And, it’s that time of year when I typically share my fearless, and often wildly inaccurate, predictions for 2020. Come, join me in the gentle art of prognostication!

  1. Donald Trump will not be the Republican nominee for President in 2020. Either he will be removed by the Senate, or he will be so damaged by the ongoing impeachment (and possible second impeachment!) that his approval with the base dips below 35%. At that point, McConnell and the Senate Republicans will cause him to be removed, to make room for…
  2. The Republican ticket for 2020 will be Mike Pence and Nikki Haley. Do not kid yourselves – this ticket has the potential to be extremely popular with the Republican base, and white evangelicals would come out strongly for it. However, it must be said that Mike has all the charisma of a cardboard cutout of himself, and he is up to his neck in the Ukraine bribery scandal. In some ways he would be just as toxic as the Mango Moron, and I do believe that the right team of Democrats could easily beat him. Which leads me to…
  3. The Democratic ticket for 2020 will be Biden/Harris. I don’t like writing this, but, we have to be realistic about the base. Biden has a high majority of black support – it’s not even close – and black people will be deciding the nominee. This is the way the Democratic nomination has gone for decades, and that won’t change now. Here are some recent figures:It is amazing to me how all the pundits on the TeeVee do not seem to grasp this basic fact about how the Democratic nominee gets selected – that it’s up to black people. For example, if a white person wins Iowa and New Hampshire, but then gets crushed in the South on Super Tuesday, that’s a big ol’ no from the base. They will be looking to see who wins in South Carolina, not the two whitest states in the country. From the article linked above:

If Buttigieg wins Iowa but flops with Black voters in South Carolina, then he will have a difficult time winning a national election as a Democrat. Likewise, if Donald Trump overperforms among Black voters, it will be incredibly hard for Republicans to lose. Candidates increase their chances of winning the presidency by taking the long-range approach of energizing Black voters in the country’s rapidly growing Black-majority cities—especially in swing states—rather than simply winning big early.

Yes, and since Joe has a hold on the base, he will be the nominee. At that point he will have to pick a VP who is young enough to take over if/when he has a health issue in the first term, and is a WOC – someone who has an ardent following and who can excite the base to come out and vote. That person will be Kamala Harris, who just turned 55, and who already has a strong base of support from her Presidential run. This teaming would unify the Party and create the excitement we need so badly. And that leads me to…

  4. Joe and Kamala will win in 2020, and we will have a fully Democratic government in 2021 for the first time since 2009. The House will stay Democratic and perhaps gain a few seats, and the Senate will flip.
  5. Bernie Sanders will finally become irrelevant once he loses the nomination by millions of votes AGAIN. His pathetic followers will continue to whine for a while, then they will lose interest and find another savior for 2024. Tulsi Gabbard, most likely.

That’s all for now, Widdershins. What are your predictions for 2020?

This is an open thread.

Good holiday er something widdershins

According to the good ole Farmer’s Almanac, winter started on the 21st of December.

Seasons of 2019 Astronomical Start Meteorological Start
SPRING Wednesday, March 20, 5:58 P.M. EDT Friday, March 1
SUMMER Friday, June 21, 11:54 A.M. EDT Saturday, June 1
FALL Monday, September 23, 3:50 A.M. EDT Sunday, September 1
WINTER Saturday, December 21, 11:19 P.M. EST

Can’t prove it by me since we got to a comfortable 67 ° and I cut the a/c on just to “move the air” a bit.

Nevertheless let’s look at some songs for winter. Oh and this will also be the weekend post.

Happy weekend Widdershins! We are about to enter a new decade and boy, are we entering this new decade in style! We got style coming out the wazoo. Sometimes we want to escape the wazoo style by going to the movies, which I did last night: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. I am sorry to report the movie is a mess. Lots of nostalgia and call-backs to previous movies, but in the silliest and most useless way possible. It’s fast, it’s loud, it’s got fights, but it’s a mess which is disappointing because this movie wraps up the original story of Luke, Leia and Han. All future “Star Wars” films will be about new characters. And Luke, Leia and Han deserved better than this….

And so, life is full of disappointments. Let’s get the disappointments out before the New Year! What are some of your favorite songs about being let down, betrayed, disappointed?

This is an open thread and if things get too depressing, throw us a curveball!

Widdershins, the moment we alternatively cheered, feared and thought would never come, has almost arrived. Drumpf and his Republican enablers can SUCK IT.

I always had faith in Pelosi doing the right thing on impeachment, but personally, I worried that Drumpf’s inevitable acquittal in the Senate would help him in his re-election campaign. Little did I know the man would self-impeach in such a flamboyant way, in public and in writing, numerous times! And in a criminal way! And that Americans would be much more in favor of impeachment and removal after about two months of investigation, than they were in favor of impeachment when Nixon was at a similar point in his process! Mea culpa Nancy, you are a genius. Hats off to you!

Speaking of public opinion, I’ve noticed impeachment is gaining traction lately. Editorial boards across the country are finally  starting to take the position that the Mango Moron deserves that forever asterisk next to his name. According to a recent Fox News poll (Dec 8-11), a majority of the American people are in favor of impeachment. Fox News’ own pundits were shocked.

“The Fox poll came out — and I was stunned by this,” Kilmeade said on “Fox and Friends.” “This says 50 percent of the country want the president impeached. I was stunned to see that that’s the number, because I thought that things were trending away.”

Actually, the Fox News poll released Sunday said that 54 percent of Americans want to see President Trump impeached. Fifty percent support impeaching him and removing him from office; an additional 4 percent support impeaching him but allowing him to remain on the job. Forty-one percent don’t think he should be impeached at all.

As I mentioned last week, people all over America are taking to the streets tonight and demonstrating in favor of impeachment. I checked my little corner of North Dallas, Texas, and whaddaya know! There are marches here too – almost 2500 people are signed up. It’s a good sign. I hope some of you will come out as well!

I know how unlikely it is, but I admit it – I really want Drumpf to be removed by the Senate. Oh Yahweh, please let that be my Hanukkah miracle – I don’t ask for much, oh Lord! Just to cover all my bases, I’ll ask Santa to add it to his list as well.

Good weekend Widdershins!

What a week Widdershins!  The House Judiciary Committee voted for two articles of impeachment on tRump and the full House will vote on those this week.  All the Republicans on that committee could do was scream and throw temper tantrums much like their fearless (?) leader.  And speaking of El caudillo del mar-a-lago, he got into a twitter argument/war with a teen aged girl among other things, and Rudi is running amok in Eastern Europe.  tRump has trouble flushing toilets and Bill Barr is once again making up his own truth. Just another normal week in tRump world.  So let’s see what the cartoonists have had on their minds.

So what’s happening in your world Widdershins?  Open thread of course.

Widdershins, this post is going to be very brief. I’ve added about 20 hours to my work week through travel to a new project, and it’s throwing me all in a tizzy! Thank goodness there’s nothing going on in the world, right?

I kid. Of the many, many things that are happening this week, I am choosing to discuss the fact that articles of impeachment are being presented to the Judiciary Committee today. Cause, well, it’s my post dammit.

Leaving a meeting with Pelosi, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot L. Engel (D-N.Y.) told reporters that he and the chairmen of other House committees would announce specific articles at a news conference at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

At an event hosted by the Wall Street Journal on Monday night, Pelosi said no final decision had been made.

“You think I’m going to tell you the articles of impeachment?” she said when asked about the matter. “We’re in a place where our members, our leadership of our committees of jurisdiction have now gotten the last input” about the conduct at issue, she added. “They’ll make a determination, a recommendation as to how we will go forward and what the articles will be.”

Under the current plan, the Judiciary Committee would vote on the articles Thursday, according to two people familiar with the matter, setting up a floor vote next week.

As Fredster noted in comments on his weekend post, a rapid response march is being organized by Impeach.org. If you feel so inclined, it looks like you might be marching sometime next week when the full House, historically, votes to impeach Donald J. Trump, the most corrupt and treasonous occupant of the White House in our nation’s history. His legacy will be of an astonishingly incompetent, unfit thief who was illegally installed by Russia and maintained by corrupt billionaires, media moguls and foreign adversaries who bought his loyalty with cash, favors and flattery.

There’s so much else out there to talk about, I will leave it at that and say, as I usually do:

This is an open thread.

I’m bringing up the Swallwell video from Fredster’s other comment, because it’s just so good.

Good Weekend Widdershins!

From the past few weeks of live hearings on the soon to be impeached mango moron, aka El caudillo del mar-a-lago (h/t to Charles Pierce) one thing we have seen has been the appearances and testimonies of very strong and self-assured women.  From the appearance of Fiona Hill, to Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch, to Stanford Law Professor Pamela Karlan, and even to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Don’t mess with me) we’ve seen images of strong, intelligent, and professional women.  Women who had no problems taking on the insulting clowns on the Republican side during those hearings.

Let’s take a look at some songs about confident, self-assured women.

This has been a short post Widdershins because this is college football championship weekend.  Not only is it the SEC championship game between LSU and Georgia, there are championship games for the Big 12, Big 10, the ACC and other conference championship games.  In other words, I’m going to get carpal tunnel from hitting the clicker so much.  Oh and I put fresh batteries in it too.

Allons les Tigres!

Open thread of course.
