It’s 2019. Women aren’t even three fifths of a person.

Posted on: May 17, 2019

“I don’t like the Supreme Court decision on abortion. I think it went too far. I don’t think that a woman has the sole right to say what should happen to her body.” Joe Biden, 1974

Compare and contrast, as they used to say on essay exams, with this:

Jennifer Wright.
You can’t take organs from a corpse without the deceased’s written permission, even if it will save lives. When you outlaw abortion, you’re allowing women less bodily autonomy than the dead.

Betty Bowers.
In Alabama is it is now more illegal to be a woman who aborts a child of rape than to be the man who raped her.

Chambliss, responding to the IVF argument from Smitherman, cites a part of the bill that says it applies to a pregnant woman. “The egg in the lab doesn’t apply. It’s not in a woman. She’s not pregnant.” (But, but, but, now it’s not about the sacred egg+sperm? All that sacredness is only when there’s a woman to control?)

And then, this good idea:

Daniel Silvermint
We should pass a Woman’s Heartbeat law: if a woman has a heartbeat, you can’t tell her what to do with her goddamn body, ever.

B.e.c.a.u.s.e. t.h.a.t. i.s. t.h.e. p.o.i.n.t.

If your heartbeat counts (or counted!), nobody can take parts of you, even to save someone else. No real human being can be forced to donate life support. If the fetus’s heartbeat counts for more than the woman’s providing life support, then she has to be a non-person.

We need the videos Fredster posted here too! Sam Bee and John Oliver from the last post.

Also the brilliant Victoria Smith, “Every patriarchal culture finds its own way to police female bodies, yet at root they’re all the same.”

Although I’d say the policing is just a side effect. Colonizing is the point: controlling women’s ability to produce the next generation, owning all that essential reproductive capacity.

Another thing I keep seeing about anti-women bigots which is just plain wrong: “they hate women.”

They don’t hate women. Whenever anyone tasks them with it, they look all shocked and start talking about how much they love their wives and daughters. That’s because, really, honestly, they don’t hate women. Does a butcher hate cows? Of course not.

It’s worse than that. Women are not people to them. Not real people. Not real people like them.

@1: Let me see if I can copy those over.

You’ll have to go to link below to see John Oliver’s take on the Georgia bill and “baby fetus”.

Excellent post Quixote. I love all the points, especially yours in the last paragraph.

Interesting thread from yesterday:

Thanks, Fredster! Those clips are both brilliant. Hit several nails, by which I mean Congressmen, squarely on the head.

Thanks, Annie!

I keep thinking of points that should have gone in the post. (What can I say. The topic is terrifyingly endless.)

The reason it’s important to address the bigots Real Point™ is that when you don’t you just play into their hands. Evidence: the past 50 years of letting them say they’re pro-life.

Arguing that women will suffer, even die, is useless. Because, really, it is the goddamn point. The suffering and death are the point. You can’t colonize a resource without sending in the army and some people get killed. It’s unfortunate, but it gets the message across to the natives to shut up and work.

Instead keep pointing out they think women, actual, real, live, women, have less personhood than a corpse.

Great post Q! It’s beyond infuriating, what’s happening.

I’m encouraged that Mueller and some judges are losing patience! About bloody time.

@14, yes! I just saw that.

But I came here to be depressing, of course. This is the worst news:

Kamala Harris:

One of my Republican colleagues admitted this week that Leader McConnell is blocking all legislation aimed at securing elections.

Foreign adversaries are already gearing up to target our next elections. This is an absurd level of irresponsibility – the time to get ready is now.

Irresponsibility is the wrong word. Aiding and abetting an attack on the country is called something else.

Plus it tells you the voters to whom Pelosi wants to pass the buck may have their hands tied by 2020. Hell, we may be hog-tied.

@15: quixote, where is that from ?

Kamala Harris’s twitter. Forgot the link.

@17: Oh! I thought I was following her. Geez, maybe I’m not!

“To whom Pelosi wants to pass the buck?” What does that mean?

Do you think Pelosi wants to lose in 2020?

“Consensual rape” ? Seriously???

madamab, I’m with Charlie Pierce on this. And Laurence Tribe. And a growing number of us lesser folk. Congress has a constitutional duty to stop a President who is unfit for office.

Pelosi is saying, as far as I can see, that politically impeachment has a low ROI so it’s of greater practical benefit to work toward winning in 2020. I.e. the voters do it.

As a matter of principle, that’s wrong, but events have rubbed my nose repeatedly in the fact that principles don’t butter any parsnips.

So, if that could really work, I suspect she’d be right.

But there’s every sign — and Kamala’s words are a scary confirmation — that work is afoot to steal 2020 blind.

It’s shortsighted to think you can let this level of criminality happen without even calling it out, which is all impeachment would do, but it would do that. It would at least give us some tools to try to stop the next theft.

That’s why I call it passing the buck. It’s shirking a vital responsibility and passing it to people who may no longer be able to do much at all.

Fredster @20. Yeah. I saw that. Just no words. None.

Great post, Quixote. That Traister article was very good, too. I’m glad she didn’t spare Democratic leaders. We have every right to be angry. Everyone of those states (mine included) are going to be paying millions of tax dollars defending their new laws that will all be struck down. And they know it and don’t care.

Republican (libertarian) rep Justin Amash of Michigan is calling for Dotard’s impeachment.

“Contrary to Barr’s portrayal, Mueller’s report reveals that President Trump engaged in specific actions and a pattern of behavior that meet the threshold for impeachment,” Amash wrote, arguing that lawmakers have become too afraid of using impeachment to deter presidential misconduct.

“Impeachment, which is a special form of indictment, does not even require probable cause that a crime (e.g., obstruction of justice) has been committed; it simply requires a finding that an official has engaged in careless, abusive, corrupt, or otherwise dishonorable conduct,” Amash wrote.

“While impeachment should be undertaken only in extraordinary circumstances, the risk we face in an environment of extreme partisanship is not that Congress will employ it as a remedy too often but rather that Congress will employ it so rarely that it cannot deter misconduct,” Amash said. “Our system of checks and balances relies on each branch’s [sic] jealously guarding its powers and upholding its duties under our Constitution. When loyalty to a political party or to an individual trumps loyalty to the Constitution, the Rule of Law — the foundation of liberty — crumbles.”

I don’t think Pelosi is passing the buck. I think she doesn’t have the votes in the House to start impeachment hearings.

I question why she is the one taking all the heat. Why are her motives and character constantly being impugned?

Everyone knows we flipped a lot of red seats blue in 2018. A lot of those new people are more moderate and may be afraid of losing their seats in 2020. If we lose the House we are completely screwed, possibly forever.

She somehow has to convince her own caucus that this is a good idea. It isn’t easy. But if they have the evidence they are requesting, they will feel they are on solid enough ground to impeach.

GAGal, I was just about to post that! I think this will help Pelosi make her case.

“Pelosi” because she’s Speaker. It’s definitely not uniquely her “fault,” or even mostly. I see her as being the one with the largest responsibility to name and shame the criminality because she is Speaker, whether she or anyone can do anything else or not.

I also see it as essential to do that. People have to hear the simple truth now and again. It can’t all be politics and practicality and calculation because too many people only look at what they’re told, not the facts.

The problem is NOT Pelosi herself. It’s having to work within a shredded structure, but it is the only one we have.

Here’s hoping Amash helps the process move forward!

Another one on fire: Laurie Penny “Let’s start by acknowledging that women are not things.”

It’s a breath of fresh air to suddenly see so many people understand it’s about rights. Not health. Not life. Not ickiness. Rights.

Another great line of hers: “The point has never been that babies matter. The point is that women don’t.”

I’ve gotten so used to being the only one banging that drum that I’m disoriented!

Ooh let me check that one out!

Damn, that was good! I remember writing way back when that I didn’t think there should be any government restrictions on abortion. Some people thought this was a radical position, but the second you start talking about “exceptions” you are clearly losing the rhetorical and moral battle.

Exactly. It’s like talking about exceptions that allow forced organ donation. If the patient is innocent! Deserving! Whatever!

People would be horrified. But treating women as brood mares because embryos are “innocent” is totally A-OK.

This is an inspiring video. Of course, the women are banding together!
