The Widdershins

Activist Tuesday: WSDD?

Posted on: March 26, 2019

Well, it looks like Barr is doing the job Drumpf hired him to do. He is whitewashing and weaseling and trying like hell to protect the criminal and his cabal currently sh*tting all over American democracy. His four-page summary left much to be desired, and quoted not a single full sentence from the Mueller Report. And the Democrats are determined to get the full story.

The Democratic chairmen of the House Judiciary, Oversight, Intelligence, Financial Services, Ways and Means, and Foreign Affairs committees have written a letter to Attorney General William Barr requesting that he submit the full Mueller report to Congress by April 2.

What they’re saying: “Your four page summary of the Special Counsel’s review is not sufficient for Congress, as a co-equal branch of government, to perform [our oversight activities]. The release of the full report and the underlying evidence and documents is urgently needed by our committees to perform their duties under the Constitution … To the extent that you believe applicable law limits your ability to comply, we urge you to begin the process of consultation with us immediately in order to establish shared parameters for resolving those issues without delay.”

So that’s one thing the Democrats are doing. But it’s clearly not enough, so I would like to pose this question to all of you Widdershins out there:

What [Else] Should Democrats Do?

I think there are a number of avenues they can pursue.

  1. Subpoena Robert Mueller. The DOJ might block it, but “what are they trying to hide” is a powerful question.
  2. Turn their focus to other matters. There’s an interesting argument at the link…and, I just read that now that Barr is in charge of the DOJ, all of a sudden they’re cool to overturn the entire ACA. Seriously! This is truly horrendous, and it’s happening right now, when no one is paying attention.

The Trump administration wants the federal courts to overturn the Affordable Care Act in its entirety, an escalation of its legal assault against the health care law.

The Justice Department said in a brief filed on Monday that the administration supports a recent district court decision that invalidated all of Obamacare. So it is now the official position of President Trump’s administration that all of the ACA — the private insurance markets that cover 15 million Americans, the Medicaid expansion that covers another 15 million, and the protections for people with preexisting conditions and other regulations — should be nullified.

When combined with Trump’s endorsement of the various Republican legislative plans to repeal and replace Obamacare and other regulatory actions pursued by his subordinates, the Trump administration’s clear, consistent and unequivocal position is that millions of people should lose their health insurance and that people should not be protected from discrimination based on their medical history.

  3. Continue to investigate. In the absence of any real insight into what Mueller found, the Democrats seem to be committed to continuing to probe the most corrupt administration in history.
  4. Something else. Any other options you can all think of!

What do you think, Widdershins?

This is an open thread.

Great post, MB.

I think that Democrats need to proceed on all avenues you listed, getting the full Mueller report, exposing it to congress and the public…nothing less.

Going after the destruction of the ACA and framing it as Trump’s revenge on the American public, their families and Congress.

Congress needs to prepare themselves by reading up on how to dismantle a manic President, seriously. He is going off the rails.

Congress is huge, Democrats are smart, they can handle all the tasks. We ask them as citizens to fight for us, be honest with us and keep us informed.

This is our fight, no time to hide under the covers. We need protests, marches, and to not let our representatives cower to the fight. Enough of the hand-holding, pc demeanor…you can’t fight a crazy bully by turning the other cheek.

From the previous post abt NASA and spacesuits.

This is the cherry on top of the sundae about the female space suit fiasco. When I heard about an “all-female” space walk my mind’s eye was seeing, I don’t know, five or six women out there.

Two. There were going to be two. Which means they had exactly one EVA suit for in case they had to put a token woman out there once in a while.

This is going beyond ridiculous into rage territory.

How did they have two women in space and forget to make suits for both of them, even an extra spare would have been proactive.

Come on NASA, wise up.

This is BS.

This is going beyond ridiculous into rage territory.

Exactly.

These are “Extra-Vehicular Activity” suits, Shadow. They’re full, bulky, expensive! (as in $1,000,000? or thereabouts) space suits. They only have them for crew expected to do work outside the shuttle. But the fact that they only had one, uno, ein, 1, in any kind of female size is still appalling.

This isn’t the Gemini space program anymore, where Lyndon Johnson told NASA to stop the “nonsense” (his word) of training female astronauts.

Ugh. I really didn’t need to see the pollen report to know that tree pollen moderate and grass pollen high.

Totally agree with the rage about the female space walk. Apparently the answer is to have the one suit serve both women and have them do the walks with men!

WTAF. Want to get the people making that decision are all male?!

*bet! My phone autocorrect is very opinionated.

Only 2? I also was picturing 5 or 6 women astronauts.

Not having an extra suit — that’s a classic “what could possible go wrong?” SF story. You always have an extra!

Forget “could be” — make that “will be.”

Another zomg-god-we’re-living-in-The-Onion’s-world story. Is this for real? Or have I been snookered?

A Repub, Mike Lee, in the goddamn Senate, showing this poster as the manly way to fight climate change;

Luna, I heard a really good history of what likely went wrong with the 737 Max. During the latter part of the recession, Airbus came out with an economical jet and began marketing it. Boeing was upgrading the 737, but wasn’t quite ready to present as energy efficient engine as Airbus. They had an engine, but the profile wasn’t right for the 737 body (if you look at the Max, the engines look a little high). They had to position the engine to avoid running up against the ground during take off (I may have misunderstood some of this), causing the nose to go up due to some weird counterbalance. The MCAS was a fix for the configuration and unfortunately, as we all know now, the override was not known or always effective. The whole thing sounded hinky.

(Sorry to be derailing here, but the manliness of it all is damaged a bit by the actual fossil evidence now indicating that Tyrannosaurus looked like this:

)

@18: Is that tRump’s little hands there?

Could be! That would explain a lot, wouldn’t it? 😯

@19, Ha! Exactly what I thought! Plus Cheeto face and sparse hair/feathers! “…they honked, not roared.”

@20/21: Direct descendant. LOL

Looks like Trumposauros is yelling “no collusion!” while trying to cover his eyes with his teeny hands 😂😂😂

Tiny hands, big mouth with a huge gut. Yup, that’s Grandpa Dump.

Our favorite bad boy, The Rude Pundit, has his take on the Mueller Report, Barr letter.

Great post, Madamab.

1. Before they subpoena Mueller, they need to bring Barr to the Hill and ask him why he thinks he has the authority to come to a conclusion when Mueller did not. Was Mueller’s intention to pass it to him or Congress? And how do we know? Release the report and Mueller’s testimony may not even be necessary. Release the damn report.

2. I’m absolutely stunned that they announced their plan to completely wipe out the ACA. Are they stooopid? Did they not learn a thing from the 2018 midterms? Yes, they’re stupid and no, they didn’t learn. I half-laughed when I saw that news. Dems need to keep pushing for a ACA fix or a better, well thought out, policy plan. They also need to emphasize the reason ACA is struggling now is because the Repubs refused to address the fore seen problems that were addressed when it was rolled out. The ACA was always expected to have to be “tweaked” as it moved forward, but instead the Repubs spent their time trying to get rid of it altogether.

3. NEVER apologize for one of your colleagues. Omar Ilan was critisizing the Israeli government not the Israeli people. Netanyahu is under indictment for corruption right now. He has recently aligned himself with a group that is referred to as “the KKK of Israel”. He doesn’t get a pass anymore than Dotard.

And how about the news that Betsy Devos just gutted the Special Olympics? This is bigger than someone might think. Talk about it even if the media tries to steer them away.

Just one more thing. Who knew (besides everyone) that the Pentagon happened to have an extra BILLION dollars laying around to ‘donate’ to Trump’s wall? I hope Congress remembers that the next time DOD presents their budget. Wait.. what am I saying? The Pentagon is allowed to keep their budget secret. Can we maybe change that, too?

Rude Pundit at Fredster’s link said it: Right now, without the report, it’s a cover up.

GAgal, Devos axing the Special Olympics is appalling. Dems should light fires on this issue.

Dems already have a plan for a better health care policy that they’re close to releasing. I saw a tweet from IIRC Nancy Pelosi on this — let’s see if I can find it again.

For Fredster:

MB, excellent post!

Shadow @2, like your ideas, especially framing dump trying to get rid of ACA as revenge.

Fredster @5, that’s pretty scary.

Quixote @18, LOL!

Am sick about the Special Olympics. DeVos must be pure evil.

I keep trying to post a cute doxie tweet, but it won’t take. Will try again later.

@32: Let me see if I can find it annie and see what I can do.

annie, it was in the trash folder. Have no idea why.

@30: Oh no, a plethora of puppers! LOL

LOL!

Vehemently opposed … until it’s time to vote.

This is adorable:

States need to take action to prevent the worst-case scenario if the GOP murders the ACA.

@46 – Nice!

I used to volunteer for the Special Olympics. The athletes were absolutely inspirational. What kind of a soulless harpy tries to destroy something so beautiful? 💔

18 white supremacist gang members, known as 1488 have been arrested in Alaska and 14 others indicted.

Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Bryan Schroder for the District of Alaska, Special Agent in Charge Jeffery Peterson of FBI’s Anchorage Division and Alaska State Troopers (AST) Captain David Hanson, Commander of Alaska Bureau of Investigation made the announcement.

In a recently unsealed indictment, Filthy Fuhrer, (formerly Timothy Lobdell), 42; Roy Naughton, aka “Thumper,” 40; Glen Baldwin, aka “Glen Dog,” 37; Craig King, aka “Oakie,” 53; Beau Cook, 32; and Colter O’Dell, 26, have each been charged with murder in aid of racketeering, kidnapping in aid of racketeering, assault in aid of racketeering, kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit assault and kidnapping in aid of racketeering. Two other key members, Nicholas M. Kozorra, aka “Beast,” 29, and Dustin J. Clowers, 34, previously pleaded guilty to murder in aid of racketeering in recently unsealed court documents.

“The defendants allegedly participated in the heinous murder of Michael Staton, with the goal of impressing their vile and racist gang,” said Assistant Attorney General Benczkowski. “The Criminal Division is committed to bringing the 1488s to justice, and holding accountable those who further its agenda of violence and hatred.”

Barr told tRump this is what he would send to the Dems in the House.

Rachel’s show tonight showing Pence trying to be all ‘John Kennedy-esque’ – “We are going BACK to the moon!” I was waiting for him to add “now that we know the women folk can’t go.” But it turns out it ain’t happening anyway. More lies.

Interesting.

It’s going to be a very long primary season.

Wayne Messam, mayor of Miramar, Fla., joins the Democratic presidential field

During an interview on CNN on Thursday morning, Messam said he is the product of an American dream that is “slipping away from a lot of Americans” and touted his stewardship of his South Florida city of about 140,000 people.

CNN anchor John Berman pointed out that Messam’s city is somewhat larger than South Bend, Ind., whose mayor, Pete Buttigieg is also seeking the Democratic presidential nomination.

@51, only the bestest! And now they’re in “advanced negotiations” with a prospective tenant. Lol, we can guess what that means – the prospective tenant isn’t answering their calls anymore.

Last night, Andersen Cooper interviewed Darth Vader Bannon. The only part of the interview I found interesting is when Cooper asked Bannon what he thought of the Dems running for President, so far and if he thought any were strong enough to battle and win against Dump.

He said he thought those in the running so far were not much of a challenge to Dump, that if Joe jumped in the race, and if by this November, if someone didn’t break out of the pack as a strong contender, that the one person, waiting in the bull pen, Hillary, she would have to jump into the race and would give Dump the best fight. He said she is in the wings anyway and might be the Dems only hope.

Between the lines, Bannon said that Dump is a fighter and implied that he would do anything to win.

@54: I’m not sure how much faith I would put in anything Bannon has to say.

You can take it as a rule of thumb that anything Bannon says is designed to get the results *he* would like. We already know Biden would be a flop.

Bannon saying Biden is the strong candidate = “I hope Dems are stupid enough to choose him. He’d be easy.”

Bannon saying Hillary would have to jump in = “Maybe I can get Dems all split and hoping for the impossible.”

Bannon saying Dump is a fighter … well, that’s the biggest joke of all. Sure, he’ll smash everything and everybody he can as he tries to bully everybody and save himself. A fighter is not the same as being mean and destructive. A fighter has courage, for one thing. The Dump will fold like a house of cards as soon as he thinks the other side can get him. Look at his attitude to Putin.

Good on for Adam Schiff!

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

So far, I am under impressed by all the Dem candidates. I had hopes for Amy, but not that excited yet. No one gets above a 6 or 7 to me.

@58: Know exactly what you mean shadow.

A short time ago I got a text from someone on Warren’s campaign asking if I would like to get a bumper sticker for her. “No”, tap, tap, tap, “blacklist”, tap, done.

I was glad to see Rachel play the entire Schiff rant on her show, all the way to the end when Schiff refuses to yield ‘The gentleman is NOT recognized’. It was a thing to behold.

@61: Gonna watch it shortly.

@60, I didn’t care for Elizabeth Warren earlier, but I’m impressed by all the policy papers she’s put on her website. I like wonkery.

61
I agree GAgal. He wouldn’t yield…in any way.

Nice to see a real Democrat smack down over a handful of GOP jerks, especially when one of them is the ahole, Nunez.

This story’s from last month, but I just saw it today and of course thought of Fredster!

Whole family watched the Schiff takedown, it was fabulous! He shamed those horrible, spineless toadies.

I think Warren is one of the smartest, and I like what I’ve heard of her ideas, but I’m not sure she could win. Trump has demonized her so badly. I like Kamala and Amy because they’re tough and smart. I don’t think Gillibrand has what it takes, she seems to be making some strange mistakes in her campaign.

Oh, there’s another man that threw his hat in the ring, a democrat who is mayor of another small city in Florida. Just what we need.

@67, I agree with you annie about Gillibrand. She seems the weakest.

On that Florida mayor — see @52. Yeah, just what we don’t actually need. But he should get washed out quickly.

How did I miss @52? Yes, that’s the guy. Luna, I hope you’re right and he fades out soon. I can’t believe all the swooning over the Buttieg guy.

@64: Yeah but I don’t want any bumper stickers nor texts from any candidates’s campaign.

@66: Aww, cute.

I’m sooo leery right now of getting another pupper. I guess due to a mild winter I’ve had some issues with mosquitoes. There’s one canal nearby but the water there moves fairly well. Didn’t know until I was discussing it with the owner but there’s another behind the property. The yard is fenced so I haven’t really seen it. She did contact the mosquito board and they sent a truck out last night. Trouble is, had I been standing in front of that truck I would have been run over, he was going so fast.

New Randy Rainbow – Yay!!

@70, I’m tired of candidates sending daily emails after I donate. This year I’ve only donated a small amount to Mark Gifford (Gabby Gifford’s husband) who’s running for Senate, and then hit the “unsubscribe” button after a few days of daily emails from them. It’s really off-putting.

A federal judge in Washington ruled late Thursday that the Trump administration’s push to make health insurance plans available outside the Affordable Care Act that avoid the requirements of the health-care law was illegal, calling the efforts “clearly an end-run around the ACA.”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/03/29/clearly-an-end-run-federal-judge-strikes-down-trump-administrations-health-plan-go-around-obamacare/?utm_term=.d4422677b6a2

Judge was appointed by G H W Bush.

@73 Mark *Kelly*

I wish, in large skywriting, that Pete and The Impossibles would all go into pulling together with the real candidates.

And I’m pretty sure that anyone criticizing Hillary has little standing to be talking about understanding the poor Dump voter.

All that said, though, he does have a point. I, for one, *do* have trouble believing Dump voters exist.

To get back on topic for a minute, here’s the latest Quinnipiac poll:

Biden 29%
Sanders 19%
O’Rourke 12%
Harris 8%
Warren 4%
Buttigieg 4%
Booker 2%
Klobuchar 2%
Castro 1%
Hickenlooper 1%
(everybody else: 0%)

So, after a month of talking about Biden nonstop, having Sanders wagging his finger all over the teevee, fawning coverage of O’Rourke, and pulling Buttigieg out of nowhere, the media are successfully burying those other candidates with actual ability and ideas.

Cool, cool. NOT.

What the Dems need to do is charge at the media like my avatar and quit tolerating enabling(!) the sexism which already has handed the country over to a treasonous con.

We. do. not. need. v2.0. in. 2020.

“Biases” is such a nice euphemism for racism and sexism, Pete, but we can see through it. We also see your gullibility in thinking we can constructively talk with people who like putting brown kids in cages, jailing women who have abortions, and hobnobbing with Putin’s bullies.

79 Q

Yup, the media has picked the men they want to support and give the most coverage to. Biden isn’t even in the race, but what does that matter, the media is calling him to run.

The smarter, more hard working women…crickets.
Who cares for them?

2008, 2016, 2020…same damn ass scenario.

Women need to get louder and protest more in unison. Pink p. hats!!!!

@80: We also see your gullibility in thinking we can constructively talk…

Didn’t Obama try that? [snark]

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Oh Lordy… It’s why I’ve always called him Uncle Gropey. Also, check out Biden’s hand in the picture with Eva Longoria. It’s hard to miss.

“Why is the vice-president of the United States touching me?”

I felt him get closer to me from behind. He leaned further in and inhaled my hair. I was mortified. I thought to myself, “I didn’t wash my hair today and the vice-president of the United States is smelling it. And also, what in the actual fuck? Why is the vice-president of the United States smelling my hair?” He proceeded to plant a big slow kiss on the back of my head. My brain couldn’t process what was happening. I was embarrassed. I was shocked. I was confused. There is a Spanish saying, “tragame tierra,” it means, “earth, swallow me whole.” I couldn’t move and I couldn’t say anything. I wanted nothing more than to get Biden away from me. My name was called and I was never happier to get on stage in front of an audience.

https://www.thecut.com/2019/03/an-awkward-kiss-changed-how-i-saw-joe-biden.html

@85: She was a Bernie supporter apparently in 2016.

There are several tweets in the thread.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

@79, crap. This is what I’m afraid of. A ticket with Biden for prez, & beto or butthead for veep.

Gawd, Annie. Ain’t that the truth.

I don’t know. If the Dem Party does that, with Harris and Warren in the field, to say nothing of Abrams who could have been the whole damn field, I don’t know…. I may just spend all my time looking up for that space ship.

Useless, I know. But it’ll hurt less.

@87, yudk. Just yuck. Nope, Biden is going to lose again if he runs.

Lol, Diamond & Silk hate my Governor! No wonder I love him.

@71, Fredster, could you explain about the mosquito concern relating to puppers? I don’t get it.

I’m beginning to believe that the media really does control who gets to run.

I do like Jay. If I had to choose a man, I’d pick him.

Luna, with Harris/Inslee we could have a west coast admin!

annie, Left Coast team! Uh-oh. It’d get called the Coastal Elites by the media and the Trumpists. Jay would be better with Warren or Klobuchar.

@92: Heart worms. I know there are preventative medicines but I would hate to have to resort to that.

Fredster, even in non-mosquito laden climes, heart worm is a real threat. I had a dog get heart worm many many years ago when they just came out with the preventative and we did not live in an area where mosquitos were rampant. I continue to see it in such areas when the preventative is not given. The preventive is a must wherever you live. The trouble is, it is expensive.

@96, I know, but a girl can dream. Of course I’d still rather have Hillary than any of them.

@98: Oh I wasn’t aware of it in areas w/out a lot of mosquitoes. Also, the treatment for heart worms is expensive and the treatment can cause problems for the dog.
