The Widdershins

Mardi Gras Activist~Not a shining knight from DC comics

Posted on: March 5, 2019

Good day Widdershins!

Is it a good day?  Well, certainly better than some we’ve had lately.

mb is having sinus issues so I’m taking a crack at doing the activist post.

I wasn’t going to get involved in the madness today on the streets of nola; been there done that.  I watched a bunch of the stuff on tv so that’s good enough for me. I had done the French Quarter thing one time.  A few of us gathered our pennies together and rented a room in the Quarter for Mardi Gras.  However, the crowds were so large they sorta pushed you in the direction they were going.  I was trying to get off of Bourbon Street to get to the hotel where we had the room.  When it got to that point I had had enough.

So moving on to the news…

Congressman Jerry Nadler of New York, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee just gave Donald tRump a big Mardi Gras surprise and it wasn’t a king cake.

The congressman sent document requests to around 81 individuals and entities.  The list was varied and interesting; he requested docs from the FBI!

Among the giftees of Nadler’s requests:

  • Donald Trump Jr.
  • Eric Trump (alas no Ivanka)
  • (they went to) Jared
  • Trump Campaign
  • Trump Organization
  • Trump Transition
  • Paul Manafort
  • Roger Stone
  • Yadda yadda

As the chairman said:

Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., said the requests issued to 81 individuals and entities would help the committee probe three main topics: obstruction of justice, including the potential interference by the president into criminal investigations; public corruption, including violations of the emoluments clause; and abuses of power, including attacks on the free press, the judiciary and law enforcement agencies.

And isn’t it interesting that those items/categories could lay the ground for impeachment charges against tRump.  Quell Surprise!

Nadler was also wicked smart in that the documents requested had already been submitted to the Special Counsel or other organizations so there’s no claiming executive privilege by tRump or the White House.

Aides to the committee said that they had intentionally limited their initial requests to material already provided to other congressional committees or federal investigators to ensure substantial compliance.

Said the chairman:

Mr. Nadler was explicit on Monday in saying that the House was no longer content to await the findings of the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, and would delve into many of the same issues, but with a different standard of evidence not wedded to a criminal indictment.

“We will act quickly to gather this information, assess the evidence and follow the facts where they lead with full transparency with the American people,” Mr. Nadler said in a statement. “This is a critical time for our nation, and we have a responsibility to investigate these matters and hold hearings for the public to have all the facts. That is exactly what we intend to do.”

So what are your thoughts Widdershins?  I say Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Open thread of course.

…we have a responsibility to investigate these matters and hold hearings for the public to have all the facts.

Gods but it’s good to have Democrats as the House majority again! I didn’t know anything about Rep Nadler before and now I am very impressed by him.

@1: Same here. I had seen him on a couple of tv political shows before but really thought he was some back-bencher from New York. Glad to be surprised about him.

Nadler also – would delve into many of the same issues, but with a different standard of evidence not wedded to a criminal indictment.

Fine by me! As much as I’d like to see Trump and his cohorts go to prison, I want them exposed. Who cares how the Republicans spin it?

Also thrilled to see Erik Prince on that list and Dump’s new campaign manager, Brad Parscale, who was hooked up with Cambridge Analytica. (there’s something there) Wouldn’t it be great to see Dump’s re-election campaign manager charged with something, too?

I feel for you Madamab! My sinuses are shot. Everyday I wake up, it’s all just closed up. The pain is usually behind my right eye. It takes me all day and half the night to get it cleared out. Then I get up the next day and do it all over again. Half the day I’m in a brain fog.

That last pic of the boat and the Cathedral in the last post!

I don’t think I ever saw the river that high when I lived there.

And it’s going to get higher! 😯

I swear there is no way to keep up with this stuff and be able to write/blog about it.

White House refuses to hand over Kushner security clearance docs

@5: I started to bring that up here but blew it off.

quixote, they’ve already opened up bays in the Bonnett Carre’ spillway upriver from nola and this is the first time they’ve done that two years in a row. Also the frequency at which they’ve opened it is increasing also.

Wow, it’s that high and the spillway has already been open? What’s going to happen when spring arrives for real?

How can they refuse to hand over the Dauphin’s security docs? This is Congress. They’re supposed to do *oversight*. I guess they plan on fighting it to the Supremes as a delaying tactic.

I wonder what it means that the Princess is not on the list?

@8: I’m wondering the same. But I’m not sure if the Corpse has opened all the bays yet.

If the river does not drop enough, they can always open the Morganza spillway above Baton Rouge.

The high and fast water has already affected navigation on the river and the C.G. Cutter bringing Zulu to Lundi Gras hit a landing gate when docking.

Note, the article is misleading. Didn’t happen on the west bank, happened on the east bank. No proofing these days.

@10: She’s secretly cooperating against “daddy” ?

q, you might find this interesting, but I can’t really understand a lot of it.

John Brennan on with Lawrence O’ was great. “It’s unheard of that a President would intervene in that process…. I’ve never even heard of a President talking about the security level of an individual, much less over ruling…

There’s not a lot I’m fond of with Bama but I luv me some Joyce Alene…even if she does teach law at Bama.

Wanted to delete the Trump part of the tweet but didn’t know how to do it. I have him blocked so I don’t see his babbling.

Hey Fredster! Am praying for your city and you. I hope you’re in a safe spot. The weather is so bizarre everywhere.

Great post btw. I thought I left a brief post earlier but it disappeared, I guess. Don’t waste time looking for it. I just said I agreed with you and Luna about Nadler.

Love Auntie Maxine.

Check out the letter (link):

@17: Oh I think things are okay annie. It’s just that it is unusual for the river to be this high this early in the year. The levees along the river should take care of things.

New Randy Rainbow!

Fredster- love Rodgers and Hammerstein and Randy Rainbow- he is amazingly talented. As a long time CSPAN viewer, I am not surprised that Nadler is in his element right now.

“Laissez les bons temps rouler”

Which meaning?

a. Lazy rulers eat bon bons when the temps rise?

b. Let the good times roll?

Rep Nadler before and now I am very impressed by him.

Me too.

10 Princess –

She is the ‘pretty one’ that the media doesn’t want to get dirty. She must be innocent with that airy, slow talking voice.

The perfect Stepford wife.

A woman like Hillary that has superior intelligence and doesn’t mind telling you the truth…is the kind of woman they like to declare is distasteful and can be abused, over and over.

quixote, “Dauphin”! Lol, that’s perfect. So, if the Dauphin’s security docs are nothing to worry about, why are they being kept hidden? No collusion, no collusion, nyet collusion. “Criminal referral” Oh, I love you even more Ted Lieu!

@23: I actually meant b, let the good times roll with Mr. Nadler and his inquiries as well as the ones with other committees.

@29, oh, science, schmience. We like our oil and gas company friends and donors.

VA Secretary to Congress: Filling 49,000 Vacancies Not a Priority

At the House Veterans Affairs Committee’s hearing about the future of the VA Feb. 27, Rep. Conor Lamb (D-PA) questioned Wilkie about the nearly 49,000 vacancies at the VA, including 43,000 at the Veterans Health Administration.

Rep. Lamb said nurses and other health care professionals have major concerns about the effect of staffing shortages on their ability to provide our veterans with the care they deserve, as well as the health and well-being of the VA staff working longer hours to make up for the severe staffing shortages.

He went on to ask whether Wilkie was concerned about the vacancies and what steps he has taken to try to fill these positions.

Wilkie replied, “I will be honest with you. Yes, I am concerned. I would not be honest with you if I told you that my focus would be filling 49,000 vacancies.”

First thing we do, we kill all the executives.

Hillary Clinton is OUT of the 2020 race. (Or is she?)

[Hell YES!!!! A shred of hope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!]

On Monday, Hillary Clinton ruled out — once and for all — running for president for a third time in 2020.

“I’m not running, but I’m going to keep on working and speaking and standing up for what I believe,” she told CNN affiliate News 12 in Westchester, New York. “I want to be sure that people understand I’m going to keep speaking out. I’m not going anywhere.”

On Tuesday night, New York Times political reporter Maggie Haberman tweeted this:

“Spoke to someone close with Clinton in contact with her today. They say she wasn’t trying to be emphatic and close the door on running when she spoke to a local reporter yesterday, and that she was surprised by how definitively it played. The person also says she is extremely unlikely to run, but that she remains bothered that she’s expected to close the door on it when, say, John Kerry isn’t. She has told her team she is waiting at least to see the Mueller report.”

Put all that polling aside, however, and we are left with this: Clinton isn’t likely to run, but she hasn’t made that decision for a final time just yet. And she believes she is entitled to operating on her own timeline to make that decision.
That’s where we are right now. I think.

Anybody else here getting ready to hoist pitchforks and light torches to force Congress to pass a Big Law with Horrific Penalties that

Can Run

For Anything

Six weeks before the primary election.

Reporting on anything to do with who is running, why they are running, where they are running, how much it costs, who their relatives are, and their method of eating asparagus would be punishable by seizure of all assets.

Harsh, maybe. But fair, right?

I’m ready! I even have two pitchforks!

@34: Absofuckinglutely!

27 Fredster, I figured as much and had to get the translation on google to know what you said. 😉

So far, I am not excited about anyone running…yet. I will vote for the
Dem that can beat the pants offa Dump, hopefully someone awesome like Hillary will run so I actually can get excited and finally wear her 2016 t-shirt again.

I don’t remember if we posted this tweet last month, but Uppity linked it yesterday, and I love it so much, I thought I’d post it for anyone who didn’t see it Who woulda thought a famous old Star Wars line could apply so perfectly to our time:

39 Wonderful Annie-

Thank you Fredster! GAGal, I feel, your pain too. I am finally starting to mend.

Love Hillary’s Mean Girls tweet! And Annie, great pic of HRC.

Sharing a tidbit…

@33 Shadow, that CNN piece is from Chris Cillizza. Even worse, Maggie Haberman. No. Just no. Just hell no. They are speaking out their asses.

@45: I didn’t want the entire thing in there just the part between Bonnie Watson Coleman and Cruella. It’s devastating.

@45 “It’s larger and has facilities.” I don’t see a bathroom in those cages. Seriously, I’m just gonna say it. Who is taking those kids to pee and poop? Are they allowed to go pee and poop when they need to? Or do they have to hold it or pee on themselves? Are they being bathed at all? If so, by whom? Total strangers, we know that much. They are probably never bathed because we already know that none are even allowed to touch each other. Even siblings are not allowed to hug each other. I’d like for Neilson to be asked that line of questioning. Every parent (and even non-parents like me) know how sweet little ones coming out a bath, after they’ve splashed around, can be.

They’re concentration camps.

@45, It’s what Sec. Nielson should get put in.

Lol lol lol!

Hipsters all look the same, man inadvertently confirms

A man mistook stock photo for himself after it was included in a story about hipsters all looking alike.

43 NW Luna

Beautiful photo and birds, Luna.
You introduce us to so many birds and animals that some of have never heard of or seen. Thx.

@50, Oh the irony (Ahem. Sorry. Couldn’t stop myself.)

So, Manafort got 47 months.

The woman who, one time!, voted when Texas thought she wasn’t supposed to got 60 months.

Anyone know when that puts him out on parole?

Oh and credit for time served, so it’s around 38 months.

Manafort turned up to the hearing in a wheelchair because the poor guy is now so infirm because he’s had such a hard time and it’s all been so hard on his family.

And he’s blameless.

In some universe where Judge Ellis lives, who last year sentenced a meth dealer to decades in prison.

After all, the only thing poor Manafort did was betray the whole country. It’s not like that actually hurts anyone.

And one more thing. Reality Winner got 5-five!-goddamn-years for trying to *save* the country. Not trash it.

Ellis was appointed by Reagan. Figures. I wonder if he made his “blameless life” comment as a way of giving dump cover to pardon him. The whole thing stinks to high heaven.

Luna, the grebes are beautiful. Wish I could see some up close.
This is a cool segment:

@58, I like that Rep.! Creative.

Wow, 16,000 times louder. Horrible.

It’s been a bad day so here’s another cute critter.

GA Gov Brian Kemp just signed this ‘heartbeat’ bill.

Amid tears, gasps and handshakes, a Georgia House committee approved legislation Wednesday to outlaw abortion after a fetus’ heartbeat can be detected, which is around the same time many women medically confirm they are pregnant.

Women in Georgia can currently seek an abortion up to 20 weeks of a pregnancy. A heartbeat is generally detectable by medical professionals at around 6 weeks.

See ya’ in court, asshole.

@58 Wow! Rep Cunningham was great. I have a major crush on him now. Hope to see more of him!

That “blameless life” will follow Ellis forever.

Manafort’s own daughter said he had blood on his hands concerning Russia’s overtaking of Ukraine. She told her sister he was literally responsible for deaths by Putin’s goons.

Jesus, Joseph, and Mary, we are living in a police state.

U.S. officials made list of reporters, lawyers, activists to question at border

And thank goodness Congress is taking a look into it.

Former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning will be held in jail until she testifies before a grand jury or that grand jury is no longer operating, a federal judge in Alexandria ruled Friday.

Just why is Manafort using a wheelchair? Bet he gets suddenly cured once he’s out of sight of the public.

It’s been a bad morning. Here’s another critter.

@68: Supposed to have gout.

Gout?! I know health care in the US leaves much to be desired, but maybe somebody could tell him that modern medicine has treatments for gout. I know three people with gout (familial tendency + eating too much meat) who get bad attacks and are not wheelchair users. Plus, to have an attack right on your court date you’d have to double down on your bad diet and stop taking your medication.

(I am not a doctor, blah, blah, blah, maybe he’s totally legit, but somehow I doubt it.)

@72; Not sure if that’s the reason for the wheelchair but I did hear that last night about the gout thing. And he previously showed up in a wheelchair for another hearing.

Congratulations ladies on International Women’s Day.

I can’t find it now (I think I saw it on Rachel’s show last night), but Manafort’s lawyers listed a whole litany of his health problems at his sentencing. There was a bunch of physical ailments as well as mental. Depression, anxiety, something something and …get this… feelings of claustrophobia. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Erik Prince is always in the back of my mind in all this. He should be tried for war crimes like his four lackeys who are in prison right now. (along with Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfield). I truly believe Mueller has his sights on him even just for lying to Congress.

GAgal, I saw that interview, excellent. I remember when that’s what journalists were tough like that. (Wish there was one that would do that to dump and Bernie) I would love to see Prince go to jail for war crimes also. I hope you’re right about Mueller.

@75, LOL re the claustrophobia!!!
