Run For Cover!

Posted on: July 15, 2018

Hello Widdershins!

It’s a bananas world out there. Let’s stay on top of it, but let’s also chillax a little with some music. Our theme today is: favorite covers. Sometimes the cover is better than the original! (I think that’s basically true of everything Bob Dylan’s ever written.) Sometimes the cover is different enough that they both work. Sometimes a song’s been covered so many times (Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” must be in the dozens at this point.) So what are some of your favorites? Here are a few of mine. This is not exhaustive and will be amended in the comments!

The first show Letterman hosted after 9/11 featured Tori Amos singing Tom Waits’ “Time.”

Boy George and The Pet Shop Boys recorded a brilliant cover of Dave Berry’s “The Crying Game” for the movie of the same name (which was named after the Berry song).

Madonna made a powerful cover of Marvin Gaye’s “I want you” with the British electronic duo Massive Attack.

Sophie B. Hawkins’ magnificent cover of Bob Dylan’s “I want you” (not to be confused with Gaye’s) impressed Dylan himself.

The Civil Wars’ surprising cover of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” is a work of genius.

Gavin Friday made a wonderfully spooky cover of U2’s “The Fly.”

Adele’s cover of The Cure’s “Lovesong” is wonderful.

A ravishing cover of Queen’s “These Are The Days of Our Lives” by George Michael, Lisa Stansfield and Queen.

Nice tunes DYB.

Every once in awhile someone posts a song from a group I have never heard of. This happened with ‘The Civil Wars’. That guy has an amazing voice.

I am not sure what a cover song is, is it just a remake?

Michael’s song, Billie Jean is one thing as a song, but his dancing along with his songs are what made them magic…IMO.

Shadowfax, yes, a cover is a remake of a song. The Civil Wars was a wonderful duo; too bad they broke up. Here is another cover/remake from them, of Leonard Cohen’s “Dance Me To The End of Love.” It’s ravishing.

Madonna has done very few covers. Actually, I can only think of 2. The Marvin Gaye cover in the main post and John Lennon’s “Imagine.”

Dixie Chicks’ cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide.”

Some may think it’s sacrilege, but Miley Cyrus’ cover of her godmother Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” is really really good.

Michael Jackson’s sassy cover of The Beatles’ “Come Together.”

One of the most famous coves of all: Sinead O’Connor’s cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” Prince recorded his own version several years earlier, but Sinead catapulted the song into myth.

Another uber famous cover: Whitney Houston’s remake of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You.”

Aretha sings “Eleanor Rigby”

Great tunes!

DYB, thanks for “covering” for me today.

Lots of stuff going on with me right now and going crazy.

I’ll put it this way: All I’ve had to eat today was a banana earlier in the day.

Great picks, DYB! There are so many great covers. Agree with you that everyone else sang Dylans (admittedly brilliant) songs better than he did, except maybe for Lay Lady Lay.

We just got back from a weekend away. Looking for a rental in Redondo Beach. We found several, but then I was charmed by Rancho Palos Verdes, which had many lovely neighborhoods that reminded me of Thousand Oaks/Westlake in the 70s. Quixote, did you sell your house?

Fredster, hope things are smoothing out. Also, eat something or you’ll be shaky.

Linda Ronstadt was the “covers” Queen:

Yes Fredster, eat something! You don’t want to get the vapors.

@15 & 17: Ordered some chicken alfredo pasta but not gonna say where from. 😉

@16: I always liked that song. It was on a cd or something.

George Michael – at that same concert above – sang Somebody To Love.

@19 Fredster> Don’t say Olive Garden.

Fredster, LOL’ing at the new sidebar pieces! Funny stuff!

Fredster @20, yeah, that song was written by Elvis Costello.

Here’s a great cover from my son. As a fun fact, he says that Jimmy Page played guitar for it:

@22: No D, it was a local place so that’s why I said that. It was okay.

One more great cover from hubs. A Cream live recording of the song “Cross Road Blues” by the father of the blues, Robert Johnson (first member of the 27 club, also according to my son.):

Dammit! wrong one!

I’ve had a couple of interesting days on Twitter. It was my time to say “RIP my mentions” because a post I made blew up. Robby Mook retweeted it.

@29: I just remember reading the tweet and liking it.

@29, Wow, D, kick ass post!

@29, Thank you DYB. This shit is the reason we can’t ‘move on’. We shouldn’t. One thing that is missing in your Podesta clip was in the last minute Podesta said ‘maybe the FBI needs to be looking into Russian interference’. Tapper sneered. Literally, his lip turned up. ‘yeah, maybe they should…’ he said. Then cut off the interview. If you can find that, shoot that at him. Not surprised he and CNN scrubbed that last minute of the interview.

I hate Tippie Tapper Toes. He was one of the worst on CNN that trashed Hillary, WolfFace too.

I hate the people that kissed Obama’s ass and were so damn nasty to our girl.

I don’t know if this has been discussed, but I am pissed. The California Dems just voted to support DeLeon rather than Dianne in the Novembercelection. Foolhardy and short sighted and divisive. What absolute fools. I contacted them, but they will ignore. I guess they wanted fresh blood- unfortunately they have wounded the soul of the party in the process.

This decision of the party will drain the coffers of the party when it was not necessary to do so at all. Dianne would have required little if any campaign dollars. Now those monies will be diverted from congressional districts to support a fool’s errand. DeLeon will require a media blitz to have a chance. What a waste.

CA Dems can go fly a kite Lililam.

Diane is going to win, again.

Hillary Clinton

Great World Cup. Question for President Trump as he meets Putin: Do you know which team you play for?

@35, lililam, that is stupid of the Calif Dems. We don’t need “fresh blood,” we need experience and smarts! That newbie without senior committee positions and knowledge of how Congress works will get slaughtered and covered in fresh blood.

DYB, oooh! Congrats. Hard-hitting tweet. Unfortunately there are hundreds of those “We Told You So” events. But emailz.

Bitingly ironic that the Clinton’s server was not hacked.

lililam> I saw that yes. I’m confused though what the significance of that is besides terrible optics. Feinstein is not leaving the race and is likely to win, right? Their decision also reveals their hypocrisy because they are the ones complaining about party getting involved in primaries. But this meddling they’re ok with?

I tweeted this a few days ago.

Today’s presser between Dump and Putin was really something. The media is flipping out. Except… how can they possibly be surprised by this??

41- yes, Feinstein is still in and currently favored to win, but my understanding is that the contributions received by the party will go to supporting “their” candidate, which even if he loses, will be a misappropriation of needed resources to send the battle to republicans in various congressional districts. It also shows divisiveness at a time when we can hardly afford it. It also is a cruel slap in the face.

@45> That needs to be sent to Jake Tapper, etc.

Something I’ve noticed about the media lately…Since the indictments came out, they have been showing that clip of Trump ‘Russia, if you’re listening’ over and over. Except they always cut off the last part – ‘I’m sure you would be greatly rewarded by the media’. Golly gee, I wonder why.

Hoping to beat Fredster…

@48: Good catch, GAgal. I’ve said for two years that the Media will never cop to what they did to put the Manchurian Candidate in the White House.

I don’t know who this is, but he’s got a lot of followers:

@48 GAgal, OMG! I don’t watch TV, so I had no idea. That’s remarkable…

Good listen.

@59, “what do we do?” Try the fucker for treason.

Oh. That’s right. Republican majority in Congress. Who are doing this now:

Freedom Caucus leaders want Rosenstein investigated for alleged threats

58 Fredster

I wish to God I could wear a t-shirt like this every day until the moxxxxfucker was impeached and marched off in cuffs.

Bravo Rachael!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

D, great posts on Twitter! I just liked them.

Maddow was incredible tonight. Remember, though, we have known that Trump is a traitor for years. Hillary told us he was Putin’s puppet, and she was right.

My question now is: What will the Republicans do? Impeachment is the only remedy. Will they do their jobs?

Pretty good cover — he forgets some of the lyrics, but hey, that was Jerry.

@64, oh crap. *angry face* Let me find another version. …

Michael Steele just said on Brian Williams that there’s nothing the Republicans can do. That’s blatantly false and disgusting.

And even the other person on the show, a woman, refuses to say the “i” word.

What the FUCKING FUCK is wrong with these people? They’re babbling about Crimea. We have a foreign agent in the White House. It’s time for IMPEACHMENT!

@66, madamab, Nothing? What about charging the Russian puppet with treason? I don’t care if they impeach him now or later — he’s given “aid and comfort” to a hostile state on fcking worldwide TV.

DYB, thanks for finding the last minute of the Tapper/Podesta interview because I had it wrong. Podesta’s comment was ‘will Comey – before the election – tell the public it was Russia hacking his emails.’

Every protest sign, especially those Trump sees should just be – THREE MILLION MORE. YEAH, MILLION!!

From Rude Pundit’s latest piece:

4. Here’s the kindest fucking spin I can put on this debacle, this plunge from incompetence and fealty into full-blown traitorous behavior. Trump is begging for Congress to end his presidency. He’s saying in so many words, “You have to stop me. You have to remove me from office. Putin won’t let me resign. So you have to do it.”

If that’s not the message that Republicans got from that utter humiliation, that deranged babbling, that press conference from Hell, then we’re well beyond fucked. We’re being prepped for some kind of takeover.

Bolding mine

Meanwhile, the Repubs are still playing games.

Speaker Paul Ryan quashed a rank-and-file effort to force Democrats to take a politically toxic vote to abolish the federal government’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, sources familiar with the matter told POLITICO.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) last week floated the idea of forcing Democrats to vote on a bill that would eliminate ICE, a proposal backed by the far-left but is unpopular with most voters. Republicans, the thinking went, would win either way: Democrats would either back the bill and watch Republicans use it against them in the midterms. Or a portion of Democrats would oppose it, depressing the liberal base.

These Republican knot heads thought it would be a good idea if THEY introduced a bill to abolish ICE.

Fredster @71, interesting thought.

GAgal @72, good lord.

Luna @67, great cover.

Republicans will do nothing. We know this. Even those who yelped something critical about Trump said nothing about *doing* anything about it. None of them. Not one person. I don’t know what would make the GOP act. Bret Baier on Fox called Trump’s behavior in Finland “disgusting.” I suppose if people on Fox did that every day for the next month GOP might take notice. But we know they won’t. Midterms is the only thing *we* can do. I know I’ve said this before, but it seems even more glaring and alarming than before: midterms are the last stand. If a blue tsunami does not happen – game over for American democracy. And even if a blue tsunami does happen, it will be very very very treacherous because Trump and the remaining Republicans will go into full survival mode. They will be wounded and that will make them even more dangerous.

@69 GAgal> I’m glad you mentioned that interview and I’m glad I was able to find it. (It was not easy! A lot of that stuff has been scrubbed by CNN. I found it, unfortunately, on a right-wing web-site that had it as a way to show Tapper destroy Podesta…) I thought that final moment was quite powerful and revealed Comey’s treachery. And it reinforced the fact that people like Jake Tapper had the information before them and simply did not care about it. They were too distracted by the stolen emails to question who stole them and why they stole them.
