Activist Monday: Dear Congresscritters…
Posted January 9, 2017on:
Good Monday, all. Apologies for the long absence. What with the holidays and long, long-overdue vacations, I haven’t been around for more than a minute to expostulate in my usual manner. I have really enjoyed the posts of my co-bloggers, and all of your comments, and I see us getting our fighting spirit back after the still-unbelievable events of November 8th.
I will say that I am gratified to finally, FINALLY see pushback amongst liberals against this ridiculous narrative that because white, male rural voters went for Drumpf, we should all run around pursuing their votes so we can get “back on track.” As you know, TW said “hell to the no” about this immediately. Guess what, those people never voted Democratic, and they never will.
Even more to the point: they are genuinely bad people, whose core values are directly contrary to ours, and who refuse to live in today’s world. The last thing we should do is reward them for this! They just got the biggest prize in the world handed to them – a President just as ignorant, misogynistic, racist, xenophobic and delusional as they are. What more do we think they deserve? Oh, I’ll answer that question for you. They deserve Der Trumperer, who will immediately proceed to f*ck them in their lazy, welfare-loving *sses from here to infinity. And you know what, my soft-hearted liberal side will hope they actually learn from this…but my snarky side will be laughing my head off.
Just read this article, if you dare, from the Washington Post. How many times have I said that Republicans live in the fake-fifties in their heads? Well, those enterprising reporters at WaPo proved it.
Seventy-four percent of white evangelicals believe American culture has mostly changed for the worse since the 1950s — more than any other group of Americans — compared with 56 percent of all whites, according to a 2016 survey by the Public Religion Research Institute. In sharp contrast, 62 percent of African Americans and 57 percent of Hispanic Americans think the culture has changed for the better, the survey said.
With his promise to “Make America Great Again,” Trump appealed directly to this sense of dispossession, and 81 percent of white evangelicals voted for him, according to exit polls.
The Post reporters went to Andy Griffith’s home town, Mount Airy, and talked to many of its residents. Here are some key quotes that show the deep, unshakable prejudices behind the Drumpf-lovin’ mentality.
Despite the steady stream of tourists, business owners are still struggling to create new jobs that will attract a younger generation, said Lizzie Morrison, 30, who runs an art studio and is the Main Street coordinator with Mount Airy Downtown.
Morrison said the city’s younger residents tend to be socially liberal, while most in the older generations look to the past. That tension makes it harder for someone like her to push for new ideas, she said.
“You deal with a lot of white, middle-aged men who might call you ‘Sweetie’ and belittle you a little bit,” she said. “It’s interesting to navigate that in a small community in trying to create jobs and be taken seriously.”
Misogyny: Check. And:
Many Mount Airy residents applauded the president-elect’s promise to revoke the Johnson Amendment, which effectively bars pastors from endorsing a candidate from the pulpit, Rowe said. They were heartened by his suggestion that Christians will be able to once again see “Merry Christmas” signs in department stores.
Religious bigotry: Check.
But the mayor acknowledges that the 1950s and ’60s were not idyllic for all Americans. He wouldn’t, for example, want to go back to the days when there were separate water fountains at the local Sears for whites and blacks. At the same time, he said, African Americans often bring hardship on themselves. Asked to explain what he meant, he amended the statement to mean young blacks.
Oh, I see. Young blacks! Racism: Check.
Here’s what I find utterly ludicrous about their attitude. They want Drumpf to “bring their jobs back.” Instead of, oh, I don’t know, going online to learn a more marketable skill, go to community college, etc., they sit on their shiftless bums and wait for the government to save them – EXACTLY the behavior they regularly excoriate “liberals” for exhibiting. Some of those ever-so-righteous white Christian folk are collecting welfare and selling possessions to pay for gas and food, just to avoid the effort of getting another job! I may have sold a few things as a starving artist in Manhattan, but I have taken on many, many different jobs to make my own rent/expenses. I didn’t go on welfare. I didn’t even ask my parents for help after I graduated from music school, and believe me, I had jack sh*t to my name. I got a cheap apartment, a roommate, managed my budget and paid my taxes, which mostly went to subsidizing their useless lives. And when it became clear that the music industry no longer afforded enough opportunities for me to make a living because of a President I didn’t vote for (thank you, Ronnie Raygun, as always, for defunding the NEA and the arts), I didn’t sit around pissing and moaning that I couldn’t find a highly-paying singing job any more, and blaming Raygun for my lack of spine and character. I found something else to do, and have made a success of it. What a concept!
So hear me now: You don’t vote Republican because of economic issues. You vote Republican because you are self-righteous, entitled, expect Uncle Sam to solve all your problems, and have a deep-rooted desire to screw over everyone who doesn’t look like, or believe like, you. If that’s not deplorable, then I don’t know what is.
Your activism this week, Widdershins, along with the other feet-on-the-street actions I see you doing (I’m SO proud of you all and can’t wait till 1/21!) is to write and call Democratic Congresscritters and tell them this. You can do this here:
Here is a sample letter and/or phone script for you. (hee hee hee)
Dear [insert name of Congresscritter here]: Do NOT listen to old white men like Joe Biden or Bernie Sanders, or any of their idiotic enablers. They didn’t support Hillary or her campaign (“Uncle Joe” almost ran against her, remember?), and they have done nothing for the Democratic Party their whole lives. The best thing we can do for those backwards rural schmucks is to ignore them and let the feces-throwing baboon they elected make them look even stupider than they are, by showing them exactly what happens when they get what they ask for. And for those few white people who voted for Drumpf and live in cities, well, maybe they’ll end up joining the rest of us who understand that we are #strongertogether, and that, thank heavens, the fifties and sixties will never come again. There are more of us than there are of them. And we have work to do.
This is an open thread.
