Weekend Widdershins ~ Going to the movies

Good Saturday and weekend Widdershins!

If you are a fan of politics, a more-than-curious observer of the art form, or like most of us here, have a dog in this hunt, the next two weeks are definitely going to be your cup of tea.

We now know that the talking yam has picked Hoosier governor Mike Pence as his veep selection.  Whether that’s a good choice remains to be seen but at least it did spare Pence the embarrassment of possibly running for reelection as governor and losing.

As to Hillary’s selection for veep, well we don’t know that quite yet.  Elizabeth Warren was slated to speak to the convention as a keynote speaker on the first night, which would seem to indicate she wasn’t going to be Hillary’s veep selection.  Then suddenly, yesterday, her name wasn’t on the list of speakers.  Tongues are wagging about that news but all we can do is wait and see.

So Widdershins, with all of the hoopla of the conventions going on I thought we might take a a look at some movies about politics and the shenanigans and intrigue that go along with that topic.  There are tons of them out there and I’m sure we all have one or more that are favorites.  These are in no particular order.

(1) The Manchurian Candidate ~ 1962 version

(2) Advise and Consent ~ scene with Charles Laughton ~ his last movie ~ lots of insider politics

(3) The Candidate ~ Robert Redford

(4) The Best Man ~ Henry Fonda

(5) Primary Colors ~ Billy Bob Thornton scene

Obviously there are lots more movies in a political vein but you all get the drift.  Please add your contributions below.

Here’s a really good movie that didn’t get enough credit:

And if the past is prologue, here’s one for Trump. Frost/Nixon, “If the President does it, it’s not illegal.”

Another great one — I just realized that Phillip Seymour Hoffman is a recurrent actor in my favorites:

And of course, there’s Dave:

From a Hillary email about Mike Pence:

Pence also has some absolutely absurd ideas that make him a natural partner for the Trump ticket. To wit:

Mike Pence doesn’t believe smoking causes deaths. He wrote on his website, “smoking doesn’t kill. In fact, two out of every three smokers does not die from a smoking related illness.” … last time I checked, that means one out of every three smokers DOES die from a smoking-related illness, right?

Mike Pence thinks climate change is a hoax. Again, in his own words: “Global warming is a myth. The global warming treaty is a disaster. There, I said it.”

Mike Pence shut down the only HIV testing center in Scott County, Indiana — in the name of preventing HIV/AIDS. In a huge surprise, that county later experienced what the press called “an exploding HIV outbreak.”

Trailer for Fail Safe, 1964.

Funny post Fredster! The dudes & I LOL’ed at your words about the yam & NoCommonSense Pence. We are at Seatac waiting for our flt. Had a nice time with family but looking forward to going home.

Prolix those are all good movies.

Advise from an Assassin from Three Days of the Condor – it’s still politics.

This was a great movie.

@7, Annie, tell Hubby and Laker howdy do. Y’all have safe travels.

@9: like Prolix said, have a good, uneventful flight home.

Trump’s first selection of an adviser should he be elected.

Too bad the logo has been changed.

Oh gosh, 3 days of the condor is one of hubbies favs. I was thinking it would be a hoot if Hillary announces her veep on the same night that Yam gives his big speech.

@13, LOLOL!

The logo was changed?!? Bummer!!!

@14: I like that movie too.

@16: Yeah, they changed it but it’s certainly not anything better.

@16, yes, they called in Sterling-Draper for more consulting work. After a particularly arduous design session lasting hours and hours, the design will be, wait for it:

Make America Great Again

According to Trump, it is the best work they have ever done and it is the best campaign logo EVER in the 450 year history of teevee logos.

@18: Yaaassss, it’s so new and improved.

@19: Lawdy, that’s lame. It needs more exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@7: Annie, glad you had a good time with your family!

Excellent political movie choices. I can’t think of any to add to the list.

Tonight we re-watched David Lean’s classic “Brief Encounter”. It’s a beautiful romantic film but so sad.

I just realized if Priebus and Pence had a love child it would be:

Reince Pence

Oh goodness, just got back from a late dinner at Logan’s Roadhouse, a steak place, and I’m stuffed. It’s not Ruth’s Chris but it fits my budget.

Came in, flipped the teevee on and Fail Safe is on TCM now.

@22: Now Beata, not even Wag? 😉

@23: My favorite nickname for Reince Priebus is rancid pe*is.

@21, thanks Beata! Agree that new logo is completely lame. They should have kept the other one. It is hilarious that the internet wags shamed them so quickly. The whole logo disaster is a good illustration of how horrible a Trump presidency would be–nothing ever thought out or considered, just blundering around like a bull in a china shop.

Fredster, I love TCM.

@28: I do too annie.

FWIW, that movie The Best Man is going to be on TCM tonight. The movie is actually a portrayal of a party convention before there were primaries like we have now and how the nomination is really settled at the convention. I’ll be watching it.

I just saw this a short time ago but apparently a man shot and killed 3 Baton Rouge police officers this morning. Here’s a timeline from The Advocate newspaper in Baton Rouge.

They just had the funeral the other day for Alton Sterling, the man shot by two B.R. police officers.

Supposedly the gunman is not from Baton Rouge but from Kansas City. He was killed in the shooting.

It’s shocking that people like this can be elected to office. He’s refusing to resign.

House of Delegates member Mike Folk said that his tweet Friday over Clinton’s use of a private email system while she served as secretary of state was “hyperbole.”

In the tweet, Folk said the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee “should be tried for treason, murder, and crimes against the US Constitution… then hung on the Mall in Washington, DC.”

He’s refusing to resign.

Then he should be removed from office.

@31 & 32: And he’s a pilot for UAL.

Hmmm…dating tips for #socklessdeadintern and #drunkmika.

@33, in the tweets, a United spokesperson said they appreciated having this brought to their attention and they would be dealing with it through regular personnel channels. Oopsie.

@36: There’s always crop dusting. o_O

Trust the Republicans to never let a tragedy go to waste.

RNC theme announced for Monday: ‘Make America Safe Again’

Speakers include:

Willie Robertson, CEO of Duck Commander and star of “Duck Dynasty.”

Rick Perry, former governor of Texas.

Scott Baio, an actor and television producer known for his characters in such hit television shows as “Happy Days,” “Joanie Loves Chachi,” and “Charles In Charge.”

Sabine Durden, an advocate for immigration reform whose son Dominic died in a motorcycle accident when, according to the Trump campaign, he was a hit by a truck driven by an unlicensed, uninsured, and unregistered driver who was in the United States illegally. Durden is one of several immigration reform advocates who will speak.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Melania Trump, wife of Donald Trump.

The Supreme King Duck, Scott Baio, and someone who used to make a living as a bare naked lady certainly makes me feel safe.

@39: And just think: This is only the opening act for a week long series of clown car moments.

Here’s some stoopid for you: The Cleveland police union has asked the gov, Kasich, to suspend Ohio’s open carry law during the Repub Convention and Kasich said “nope – no can do”.

Kasich’s spokeswoman, Emmalee Kalmbach, said the governor does not have the authority to suspend state and federal laws regarding open carry.

“Law enforcement is a noble, essential calling and we all grieve that we’ve again seen attacks on officers,” Kalmbach said in a statement. “Ohio governors do not have the power to arbitrarily suspend federal and state constitutional rights or state laws as suggested. The bonds between our communities and police must be reset and rebuilt–as we’re doing in Ohio–so our communities and officers can both be safe. Everyone has an important role to play in that renewal.”

Utterly sad and pathetic.

@41. I call BS. It’s not arbitrary. He does have a right to suspend nearly whatever if circumstances warrant. Bunch of hating wackos carrying weapons of mass destruction and struttin’ around while Trump fans the flames of hatred and contempt — what could possibly go wrong?
