The Widdershins

A good Friday to you Widdershins! Fredster here instead of Prolix today.  He and I are swapping places for today and the weekend.

It looks like things are falling into place for the Donald to have his coronation nomination in

Not that Crown

No, not THAT Crown

Cleveland at the Quicken Loans arena.  And I wrote coronation because with Trump and his ego, and with his tendency to lean toward the garish, I would not be surprised to see some type of contraption lower a velvet pillow down with a crown placed on it.  Then Melania will lift the crown up, holding it

"this" crown

“this” crown

towards the audience for all to see.  Afterwards, she will place the crown on Donald’s head.

Of course given that this is a national political convention there will be numerous speeches given by party leaders, members of Congress, elder statesmen of the party and the like.  Except…except this time appears to be different.  There seems to be a dearth of people who desire to speak at this convention, nominating this candidate.  And it seems that a number of individuals won’t even be attending the convention.

A slot at the Republican National Convention used to be a career-maker — a chance to make your name on the big stage and to catch the eye of the Republican donors and activists who make or break campaigns.

In the year of Trump: Not so much.

“I am not attending,” said South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy

“I’m not,” said South Carolina Rep. Mark Sanford, a former two-term governor.

“Don’t know,” said Sean Duffy, a reality-TV-star-turned-Wisconsin congressman. “I haven’t thought about it.”

Florida Rep. Carlos Curbelo: “I won’t be there.”

Stuart Stevens, a Republican strategist who helped plan the 2012 convention said:

“Everyone has to make their own choice, but at this point, 70 percent of the American public doesn’t like Donald Trump. That’s as toxic as we’ve seen in American politics”

“Normally, people want to speak at national conventions. It launched Barack Obama’s political career.”

Yeah, well not this time.  Among some of the others not attending this particular convention:

  • New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte
  • Sen. Lindsey Graham
  • Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn
  • None of the Bushes
  • Sen. John “loser” McCain

Often the convention is a venue where “rising stars” of the party can get a good deal of face time and make favorable impressions with speeches.  This time?  Not so much.

Nebraska’s Ben Sasse, who’s said he won’t vote for the real estate mogul, isn’t expected to be at Cleveland.

Utah Sen. Mike Lee, an outspoken Trump critic who will be serving on the convention’s powerful Rules Committee, hasn’t been asked to speak

Not even the GOP leaders in charge of maintaining the party’s congressional majorities — Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker and Oregon Rep. Greg Walden — wouldn’t say whether they’d take the podium.

However, fear not dear Widdershins!  There are people lined up to give speeches at the Donald’s convention, his three children:

It’s also expected that Trump’s children, including daughter Ivanka and sons Eric and Donald Jr., will get prime-time spots. The three have emerged as Trump’s most vocal surrogates.

Trump, knowing his convention will need a little of the glamour, pizazz, and showmanship that goes along with the Trump name has asked a couple of his good buddies to make an appearance at the convention.

Ditka at Flamingo“It’s gonna be a great combination of our great politicians,” said Ivanka Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s daughter, during a Wednesday radio interview, according to Buzzfeed, “but also great American businessmen and women and leaders across industry and leaders across really all the sectors, from athletes to coaches and everything in between.”

She added that the July 18-21 convention in Cleveland was “not gonna be a ho-hum lineup of the typical politicians.”

Rumor has it that Mike Ditka will be asked to make an appearance in Cleveland, Ditka-cigarand the same goes for fighter Mike Tyson.  No word yet on whether they will have speaking roles at the convention but, especially for Tyson, I dearly hope so.

Said Trump about Tyson:

“Mike Tyson endorsed me, I love it,” Trump said in April in Indiana. “You know, all Mike Tysonthe tough guys endorse me. I like that.”

Sometimes you just can’t make this stuff up.  I’m serious.  Really.  I would say something like “this is going to be a real circus” but that isn’t needed.  We already had the elephants and now it appears we’ll have the clowns too.

Addendum:  Alas, Da Coach has decided he may not go to the convention.

Because we here at The Widdershins are not above talking about the cheap and tawdry, I would be remiss if I did not pass along this news from the Morning Schmoe crew.

Mika Brzezinski has divorced her husband of 22 years, Jim Hoffer, an investigative reporter with one of the New York television affiliates.

As to the next question that, ahem, arises, whether #drunkmika and #socklessdeadintern have been schuppting, here is what PageSix said:

Popular MSNBC stars Scarborough and Brzezinski are widely rumored to be romantically involved — and there’s plenty of on-air chemistry for all to see. But while Scarborough is also divorced — since 2013 — the TV duo have never confirmed they’re romantically involved.

An NBC insider told us, “Everybody at 30 Rock knows they are a couple . . . They are constantly together, they arrive and leave events together, even on weekends. They are each other’s publicists and finish each other’s sentences. It’s the worst-kept secret in TV.”

The only thing I can add to this is:

So what’s on your mind today Widdershins?  This is an open thread.  Take the discussion wherever you wish.
