Celebrating Memorial Day – “On thy grave the rain shall fall from the eyes of a mighty nation!”

Posted on: May 28, 2016

Good day Widdershins and yes this  is Memorial Day weekend, when we honor those men and women who have given their lives in duty to their country.  Enjoy your barbeque, potato salad and whatever other fixin’s you will have, but take a moment to pause and reflect on those who gave their lives for our country.

The quote in the headline is by Thomas William Parsons of Boston.  I have never heard of him previously but his quote was liststed on a site of Memorial Day quotes and I liked it.

Here are a couple of others that we may or may not think of on this day:

to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan –
from Abraham Lincoln’s 2nd Inaugural Address

And I liked this one from Longfellow:Boy Visiting Grave on Veterans Day

They are dead; but they live in each Patriot’s breast,
And their names are engraven on honor’s bright crest.

What I’m going to do today is to put up a series of pictures of our military from the various conflicts our nation has engaged in.

The Revolutionary War

American Revolution Gravestone

Washington

The War of 1812

War of 1812

The Civil War

War between the States

World War I

WW I soldiers

World War II

Women in WW II

Korean Conflict

Korean Conflict

Viet Nam

Viet Nam: helo and troops

Iraq – Afghanistan

U.S. Troops leaving Iraq

Female solider Iraq

Woman soldier

What I was looking for, for this post, were pictures/photos of the *people* in the war.  Obviously there are tons and tons of them out there, but I just chose those that seemed to attract my attention.

veterans-who paid priceWhether a veteran has served in a “good war” as some say or a “bad[?]” war, they have all served and those who died gave us the ultimate sacrifice.  So let us pause and reflect on that, and on those they left behind.

Nice post, Fredster. Let’s hope Hillary can start making these Memorial Days less sad. We have a long way to go before we can call ourselves civilized, when we still use war as a way to solve our disputes with other people and nations.

Good post, Fredster. You’ve reminded me to put out our flag.

@1: Oh that would be great if we could do that.

MB, don’t know how familiar you are with Charles Ives but he was one of the first of America’s modernist and even atonal composers. And, for his “real” job he was an actuary for insurance companies and then formed his own insurance company.

During his career as an insurance executive and actuary, Ives devised creative ways to structure life-insurance packages for people of means, which laid the foundation of the modern practice of estate planning.

What can I say here? Patriotic Doxies…

Great pictures. Hope everyone enjoys the holiday weekend. I feel fortunate that my uncles who served in Korea and Vietnam and my nephew in Iraq, all came home safe.

The DNC tells Bernie to go fly a kite.

“Having carefully reviewed your challenge, we find that it fails to meet the criteria for the foregoing reasons and pursuant to the Regulations and Bylaws Committee for the 2016 Democratic National Convention, Reg. 3.4(G)(i) we are compelled to dismiss it,” they wrote to Deutsch.

@6: Same for me with family members who served and in combat. Although, my dad did tell me some hairy stories about stuff that happened in Vietnam.

@7: GAgal do you have a link to that?

@10: Thank ye ma’am!

I hope they keep slapping him down till he’s dizzy from it.

This is an image to remember on Memorial Day:

Feeding Baby

Fredster, what a beautiful post! Thanks for that. It’s good to be reminded what Memorial Day is supposed to be about.

@7, yay!

@12, yes, that picture is both sweet and sad at the same time.

@12: Nice photo.

Trump badmouths judge on his Trump U case – judge unseals Trump U documents.

It’s unclear whether the judge knew of Trump’s latest volley of attacks when the judge issued the order Friday afternoon, but it seems possible. Curiously, the Republican candidate laid into the judge at about the same time the judge was holding a hearing less than a mile away on a motion by the Washington Post seeking unsealing of the Trump University-related files. The judge’s order was released a couple hours after the hearing.

Welp, the possum didn’t rally and LSU lost to FL in the SEC tournament. 😥

They will still host a regional in Baton Rouge.

Fredster – yes I know Charles Ives’ music. It’s very, um, interesting. 😀

@19: LOL! That’s true.

In college we had a concert band arrangement of Variations on America that we trotted out on many occasions.

Here’s a very good post :
http://www.thepeoplesview.net/main/2016/5/29/in-her-corner-how-the-2016-democratic-primary-has-made-me-a-staunch-hillary-clinton-supporter
especially this:
” I often fall asleep at night contemplating if these things are even worth fighting for and I’ve only been at this for five months.

Hillary Clinton has had to endure all this for twenty-five years. ”
Well worth a read. Enjoy your day.

@21, that was nice. Thank god for the millennials who support Hillary. I hope everyone is having a nice Memorial Day weekend.

@21: Wonderful article MsMass. Thanks for sharing that.

Oh dear…what/whomever. Louis Goober, uh Gohmert is worried about (drumroll) GAYS IN SPACE!

Gohmert argued that we need to discriminate against LGBT people now or the future of humanity is in danger.

How? It’s really quite simple. At some point, a giant asteroid may start barreling toward earth, putting the future of humanity in doubt. We will then need to prepare a special spaceship and send a group of people to colonize Mars.

If we can’t discriminate against LGBT people, Gohmert reminds us, all of the people on the special spaceship might end up being same-sex couples.

What will happen to humanity when everyone on Mars is gay? Gohmert is sketchy on the details. But here’s the video

I’ll say this: I bet Mars Fashion Week will be just fabulous!

Today on the talkies, BerningBum said:

“I’m knocking my brains out to win the Democratic nomination.”

Perhaps if he had seen a neurologist beforehand he could have saved all that needless knocking.

@26: That’s good Bernie; keep on knocking those brains out. Heh.

Fredster @25. :one great big huge boggled face here:

In a world with climate change and ISIS, and for that matter the likes of Gohmert, the most important thing to do, the absolute first priority, is to worry about crew selection just in case an asteroid strikes in the next two hundred million years.

Wow. Just wow.

And I’m a tad surprised (yes, even after that, I’m still capable of being surprised) that he it doesn’t occur to him that if we can colonize space, assisted reproduction will be basic technology. An all-gay crew, so long as it includes both ova- and sperm-producers, will have no trouble generating generations.

quixote@28 said: it doesn’t occur to him that if we can colonize space, assisted reproduction will be basic technology.

Ah quioxte you’re just asking too much of ole Louie to expect him to figure that out. Not sure which bothers me more: the fact that he’s capable of spouting such nonsense or the voters in his district who keep sending him back to Congress.

Bill Kristol, another fine example of a Republican Trust Fund baby who will not take no for an answer, has announced:

‏@BillKristol
Just a heads up over this holiday weekend: There will be an independent candidate–an impressive one, with a strong team and a real chance.

L’Orange Trump has developed a sudden case of boxers in a bunch. He is tweeting as fast as his stubby little fingers can tweet. Within 9 minutes he had tweeted three tweets starting with this:

Bill Kristol has been wrong for 2yrs-an embarrassed loser, but if the GOP can’t control their own, then they are not a party. Be tough, R’s!

Since the Texas deadline to get on the ballot as an Independent has passed, there’s speculation as to Rick “Pretty Hair and Hipster Glasses” Perry. There’s also the viper-headed, T Rex underbite of Ted Cruz. In any event, it will have to be someone who can get those in TX who can write, to write-in.

@30: Oh I can’t wait for this. Trump is partly right in that Kristol has been wrong so many times it’s just sad. However I hope he’s right this time. I would love to see something start a kerfuffle in the R party right now. It might take some of the spotlight off Hillary and that lousy poll if just for a few days.

@25, omg, he’s a lunatic.

Fredster, tomorrow will you post the You Tube of the dudebro who did a striptease at the Libertarian Convention?
Apologies in advance to the more sensitive among us.

@33 Here you go Sweet Sue. (I haven’t watched it yet).

@33 and 34: OMG my twin brother is sooo embarrassing! o_O

However, I’m glad he decided against wearing the thong dealie.

@35 I’m just glad the banner was across the bottom of the screen for most of that!

Fredster and GAgal, you are naughty.

@37 Sweet Sue! It was your idea!! 🙂

I missed this from a couple of days ago about Barney Frank.

Frank also said it was false to assume he had a “25 year vendetta” against Sanders.

“About 10 years ago, or 12 years ago, at his request as a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee, I went to Burlington to speak at a fundraiser for him,” said Frank. “I hope, for the sake of his purity, that no bankers snuck into the room. And I hope he will release the list of the attendees from that fundraiser, just to make sure.”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2016/05/28/dnc-rejects-sanderss-challenge-of-rules-committee-co-chairs/

@39: Oh Bernie, you just screwed up big time messing with Barney.

And I hope he will release the list of the attendees from that fundraiser, just to make sure.”

Hell, that crew can’t even get their tax returns together.

Now Sweet Sue, you asked for that and you got it. I just tried to make the image, um…more vivid shall we say. 😛

So Bernie, how are things going down Caracas way with your socialist brothers? Not too well I see from this.

Someone at Upp’s mentioned this song because it’s Memorial Day. Man, there are so many singers who performed this song.

Okay, I just saw a still of “the stripper” from the Libertarian Party. He’s turned sideways (and by the way that’s worse because his a-crack is showing). He has a HUGE Iron Cross tatooted on his upper arm. No thanks. Feel free to delete. I don’t think the libertarian party is that bad. At least I hope not. That’s probably why he said “I quit” and people told him he was making an ass out of himself. Still it was fun!!

@44: Oh no! The stripper Libertarian has a crack problem! 😮

My point was not his crack, but his Heil Hitler cross on his shoulder/arm.

@46: I know what you were getting it, it’s just I saw a chance for a cheap shot there and took it. 😉

Oh my…Jan Crouch has left us and moved to the next plane of existence. Don’t guess that chicken deal helped very much.

Eight years ago today. 5/31/08 DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee.

I was surprised to see CA Gov. Jerry Brown endorsed Hillary. I was not surprised when Bernie promptly called Gov Moonbeam “establishment”.

@49 – “Happy” PUMAVersary all. Hoping to get a post from SM tomorrow!

Republicans are still at it because of those bogus Planned Parenthood videos. WaPo calls ’em out.

ANY DOUBT about the kind of investigation into fetal tissue research that would be conducted by a special House panel was erased at its first hearing, when one of the witnesses called by Republicans drew comparisons between this life-saving medical work and the experiments of Nazi war criminal Josef Mengele. And the panel has gone downhill since.

MadamaB, it’s coming!!! Just had a rough commute on I-4, kid, mom issues, taking care of family stuff at this moment.

It’s okay SM77! Take your time..I’m just excited. 😃

Interesting piece on the Inspector General’s report.

Ironically, had Hillary done as those 90 staffers and Secretary Powell had done and simply used a personal email account instead of her own server, it is unlikely any of her records could be retrieved. Instead, the State Department (and ultimately the world) got to pour through 55,000 pages of email, the vast majority of which was the boring work of government with some cherry picked threads of gossip and other click bait ephemera the media loves to focus on. Conversely, email Powell and his and Rice’s aides sent while we were at war in two countries and attacked on September 11th, 2001 are lost to history.

#55- good point. That’s probably why they weren’t saved.
