The Widdershins

Good Monday, Widdershins.  It’s truly incredible to me, but it looks like tomorrow’s election could see the return of the Republicans to power in the Senate. Here is an interesting take on why, from Robert Parry.

If most polls are correct and voters elect a Republican-controlled Congress on Tuesday, a principal reason is that many Americans have been sold on a false recounting of the nation’s Founding Narrative. They have bought the Right’s made-up storyline about the Constitution’s Framers detesting a strong federal government and favoring states’ rights.

This notion of the Framers as enemies of an activist national government is untrue but has become a popular meme as promoted through the vast right-wing media and accepted by the timid mainstream press, which is unwilling to fight for an accurate portrayal of what the Federalists who wrote the Constitution intended.

[snip]

But the historical reality is that both the white supremacists and the anti-regulatory corporatists viewed the Constitution as a threat to their interests because of its creation of a powerful central government that was given a mandate to “promote the general Welfare.” The Constitution was far from perfect and its authors did not always have the noblest of motives, but it created a structure that could reflect the popular will and be used for the nation’s good.

Many years ago, I wrote about FDR vs. Reagan and the battle for America’s soul. Thanks to a President who is bought and paid for by the very interests FDR successfully battled,  it appears that Reagan, for now, has won.

Our only consolation is that if the polls are correct, and the Republicans take over the Senate, at least we know that the results were mostly un-hacked, as 70% of Americans will vote on paper this year.

States have abandoned electronic voting machines in droves, ensuring that most voters will be casting their ballots by hand on Election Day.

With many electronic voting machines more than a decade old, and states lacking the funding to repair or replace them, officials have opted to return to the pencil-and-paper voting that the new technology was supposed to replace.

Nearly 70 percent of voters will be casting ballots by hand on Tuesday, according to Pamela Smith, president of election watchdog Verified Voting.

“Paper, even though it sounds kind of old school, it actually has properties that serve the elections really well,” Smith said.

Ah, the irony. The machines were put in place by Republicans to steal elections for their Party; then, Dubya slashed taxes so radically that states went bankrupt and couldn’t afford the machines. As a result, this will most likely be the most honest election in 14 years. Now it’s up to those voters in swing states to turn out and prevent the uber-nutjobs from controlling the Senate, along with the House and the Supreme Court. Here’s hoping we have some good news on Wednesday.

This is an open thread.
