Dressed for Spring-Dianne Johnson

Good Saturday to you Widdershins and yes, chatblu’s back condition is contagious.  Thank goodness mine is not as severe as chat’s has been.  Mine happened the other night at the grocery store while bending over to get something off a lower shelf.  As I was standing up I felt a very familiar “twinge” when standing and just thought “uh-oh”.  I blew off  several items on the list that weren’t absolutely necessary and checked out as soon as I could.  I’ve been getting by with Aleve and thankfully not having to resort the the prescription meds.  That being said, I think tonight I may have “twinged” again so I’ll be brief today.

What’s grandma up to over at the
old folks home?  (Don’t ask)

I had read something previously on this but it is apparently a phenomenon that’s, uh, growing.  Yes, our grandmas and grandpas are making whoopee down at the local nursing home or assisted living center.   And the thing is, they may not be doing it in a safe manner.

Statistics show that behind closed doors, folks at places like Good Samaritan Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and other nursing homes around the city are getting intimate with their peers. Eighty percent of 50- to 90-year-olds are sexually active, according to Dr. Neil Baum, a People’s Health physician and urologist who has written extensively about senior citizens’ sexual health. Elderly care directors and doctors encourage those relationships — as long as members practice safe and responsible sex.

And that seems to be the problem.  Our older folks aren’t practicing safe sex.

“Many people want and need to be close to others as they grow older,” Baum says. “This includes the desire to continue an active, satisfying sex life. However, age does not protect you from sexually transmitted infections.”

And indeed, a piece in the Student British Medical Journal showed thatrates of sexually transmitted diseases have doubled among 50- to 90-year-olds since 2000.”  And the CDC had numbers that showed “19,000 people over age 45 were diagnosed with chlamydia in 2010, versus 6,700 in 2000.”  Further, “the problem doesn’t stop at chlamydia. There were more than 2,500 cases of syphilis reported in 45- to 64-year-olds in 2010, versus 885 in 2000, according to the CDC.”

Dr. Baum says that the senior population is growing faster than any other age group “And that population is having a lot more sex.”.  And guess what the primary reason is for that?  Yep, the little blue pill.

Part of the reason, he adds, is because in 1998, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration changed the course of history by approving Viagra, making it easier for seniors to consummate sex.

Yep, no more of “the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak” type excuse.

Now, this is light fare Saturday so I’m not going to go into this further, but it does give pause to reflect that indeed, a fun time for Grandma and Grandpa may not just be a hot game of Bingo in the dining hall.

Something completely apropos of nothing

I cannot recall how I came across this etching, but I love it and think it’s hysterical.  However, I’m not gonna fork over the price they want for it, nor am I going to link to the site where I found it.  Just enjoy it for the…whimsy of it?

Looking for Carmen Miranda-Xavier Viramontes

Some assorted youtubes

Take a scene from Jurasic Park and insert your favorite, sweet, giant-sized kitteh for the raptors and this is what it might look like.

Here’s a clip of one of those small helicopter drones flying into an active volcano, Yasur volcano on Tanna island, Vanuatu, while it is active.  It is fascinating to watch.  The night shots are really great.

Another volcano video…what happens when molten lava meets a can of Coke?  Actually, several cans of Coke.

This last one is my favorite.  It seems that everyone has a GoPro camera these days and find ways to capture “stuff”.  Well this stuff is about a pelican who learns to fly and the people at the rescue where he was, put a camera on him and got him to take off, with some assistance from the staff.

Abandoned by his flock, Bigbird the pelican stumbled ashore after a storm and was taken in by the staff of Greystoke Mahale in Tanzania. Watch as Bigbird learns to fly for the first time.

And finally, this is a call out to our vocalists here.  I want to get a good c.d. version of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and I need some suggestions.  Bonus points if you know the version has the texts with it and extra, extra bonus points if you know it has the text both in English and German.  Tall order I know, but all suggestions are welcomed.

Okay, two Aleve have my name on them and my heating pad is beckoning.

This is an open thread.

Fredster, hope you feel better.

Love the Carmen Bullranda Dog picture.

Rest, heat, NSAIDs, muscle relaxants = repeat prn.

Hey Prolix! Glad to see you on a Saturday. Honestly, I have no idea what it is that appeals to be about that poster/etching, but I just love it. I don’t think it would have worked with another breed.

Are you still seeing the black banner across the top of the page? I’m hoping whatever we did yesterday is still working.

I was reading a piece on which was talking about prescription prices under policies obtained through the A.C.A. But the price issue is due to the insurance companies and not the A.C.A. Blame it on those greedy s.o.b’s.

As the article says:

Insurers can generally choose to put whichever drugs they want into the specialty tier of a plan

I know my script costs have gone up under my BCBS plan. Nothing drastic but I take mostly generic meds.

chat@2: I’m trying to stay off the flexiril if I can. If the Aleve can take care of it, I’ll stick to that for now, and of course the heating pad.

If you can avoid it, by all means do so.

Oh great…I just signed into my email acct and it appears that it got hacked. Someone tried to send out a sh*tload of spam but yahoo stopped them from going out. Had to change the password. That being said, if y’all get anything from me that looks like an odd subject line, just delete it.

Sorry you guys are laid up this spring weekend. Hope you are both up and around soon. Interesting vids, Fredster. I must say, I would have never thought of putting coke cans in a lava path! That brave soul was certainly original!

annie@8: Well mine has not been as bad as dear chat’s has been since I’ve gotten by with the o.t.c. stuff and a heating pad. The thing is I have to still take it a little easy for a few days until it’s better.

Glad you liked the vids. I got the biggest kick out of the pelican learning to fly and then my cute Carmen Miranda bulldog etching. LOL!

Isn’t the dog a pug? Bulldogs – and I know my Bulldawgs – don;t have a mask.

Oh hell if I know. They all have those smashed in faces to me.
