Activist Wednesday: Three Important Actions

Posted on: February 12, 2014

The DogFather

Hello Widdershins! I hope your fingers are warmed up and ready to do some signing, because we’ve got three, count ’em three, actions to take today.

First, here’s the latest on Fast Track, which we discussed a couple of weeks ago. Turns out that the Senate, led by Harry Reid, is rock-solid against it, but the House? Potentially wobbly.

“I’m against fast track,” Reid said, adding: “Everyone would be well advised just to not push this right now.” This is being widely seen as a sign the administration will have a tough time winning Congressional approval for the fast track bill, particularly from fellow Dems — and even that it may fail.

But liberal groups who oppose fast track authority – arguing, as some economists and labor officials have, that the trade deals will mean further job loss due to globalization and worsening inequality —  are not sanguine. They argue we should be watching the House of Representative, not just the Senate, for clues to the fate awaiting fast track. The bill is supported by many Republicans and business groups, which means it would likely pass the House.

Although Nancy Pelosi has moved from Majority to Minority Leader, a similarly strong stance from her would present a united Democratic front in the House. If Fast Track passed the House with minimal to no Democratic support, the bill would not acquire the Golden Snitch-Like burnish of “bi-partisanship” which is so dearly beloved by the denizens of DC.

Pelosi could kill any chances of Fast Track passing the Senate. Help her make that decision, won’t you? Sign DFA’s petition.

Next, we have a cause that’s especially near and dear to my heart: Ratifying the ERA! It looks like Virginia has moved one step closer.

On Wednesday, February 4th, the Virginia Senate voted to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment bringing us one step closer to full ratification.

The Equal Rights Amendment would provide a path to reliable economic security for both women and men by guaranteeing that equal pay for equal work is enshrined in the United States Constitution. We need the Equal Rights Amendment to lift women and families out of poverty and promote household stability. This is a civil rights issue!

Without the Equal Rights Amendment laws like Lily Ledbetter and the Pay Equity Act have no teeth. There is nothing in the United States Constitution that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex so these piecemeal laws have no judicial standing.

“Every Constitution written since the end of World War II includes a provision that men and women are citizens of equal stature. Ours does not.”

— Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

And finally…the Military Justice Improvement Act, which we also discussed some time ago, is in need of your support. Some Democrats seem to be wavering.

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) has said she will filibuster her colleague Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s (D-NY) Military Justice Improvement Act (MJIA), which would remove prosecution decisions for serious crimes like sexual assault from the military command.

“There’s a disagreement here,” McCaskill told reporters on Capitol Hill. “We do not believe that her bill will protect victims. We do not believe that it will result in more prosecutions. We do not believe it will increase reporting. And we believe there’s real workability problems in terms of how quickly these cases will be brought to court.”

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) expressed dismay at the press conference that the MJIA might be shut out of floor debate.

“We shouldn’t have to get to 60,” said Boxer. ”Justice should never be filibustered.”

Gillibrand has said she is confident she can get the 60 votes needed to break a filibuster.

Boxer is right. And furthermore, McCaskill should be ashamed of herself. All of the bullsh*t that has gone on in the Senate in the past several years…and this, this bill that will finally address the issue of sexual violence in the military – this is what she wants to filibuster?! Wendy Davis is not going to be impressed.

Help McCaskill understand that filibustering this bill won’t get her anywhere. Declare your support for the MJIA at the link below.

This is an open thread.

Done and done and done. All three signed!

Well, well, well. Ray-ray (former mayor of nola) convicted of 20 of 21 counts in federal court. And in reality, his bribe amounts were really kinda chump change when compared to other crooked, convicted La politicians! 😆

Done three times over.

I’m really surprised at McCaskill — she is such an inveterate weather vane when it comes to issues, I can’t figure out why she is planting her flag so deeply on this issue. There are loads of military in MO, but I can’t believe this issue would move them to the point of her taking such a stand.

In order to save time on issues, I’m adding a new default position — if Elizabeth Warren or Kristen Gillibrand is for it, I am too.

Fredster, are you slip sliding away yet?

Prolix@4: Not so much here right now, but to the east of us it looks nasty. Here’s the latest from the local weather “gawd”.

The rain is turning over to sleet and snow across the area. Via social media, it starts raining, then becomes a freezing rain and sleet mixture, and finally turns into snow. The radar image has changed rapidly the last hour as blue and pink, which are snow and a wintry mix, are taking the place of green which is mostly rain. We will continue to see the transition across Central Alabama through the afternoon.

Now that freeze line is going to start moving down later tonight.

Fuzzy, I sent you a txt message when you can check for it.

Thanks guys!!!

Prolix, I pretty much have that same default position. 🙂

Re McCaskill, I am really puzzled as well. She is just not the type to put on pink tennis shoes and adult diapers and stand up for….well, anything. Unfortunately though, her record on supporting her female Democratic colleagues is not good at all, as we saw when she threw her support to Obama in 2008.

I just saw this in Prolix’s comment:

In order to save time on issues, I’m adding a new default position — if Elizabeth Warren or Kristen Gillibrand is for it, I am too.

Makes sense to me.

Fredster I have a good post prepped…

sorry call me when you get a chance I am heading to Tampa Friday afternoon I need some help on the dashboard spoiler alert Madamab you must be psychic…BTW Fuzzy does not have text

Fredster, am glad you’re not getting hammered. It looks awful on the news. MB, signed the petitions. Agree with you all re: prolix’s default position!

@3 Thanks for the brain cell saver, Prolix. Now I won’t have to listen to or read about the other 98 morons.

annie@13: Nope we’re not too bad this time here in b’ham. We do have about 3″ inches of snow and it’s lovely to look at, but I don’t have to go out and deal with it. 🙂 It’s exactly 32° here now but will warm up later today and probably the snow will be gone.
