The Widdershins

snow plow at workGood Saturday to you Widdershins.  From what I’ve been watching on the Weather Channel and on the news, I gather a goodly number of our Northeastern Widdershins are seeing a lot of these on your roads.  I hope they are doing the job for you and keeping your roads clear.

We are a bit unusually cool here with lows the last two nights in the twenties.  However our BIG arctic blast will come Sunday and Monday nights with the lows going to 10 ° and 7 ° those two nights. The Wx folks have said we’ll have about 60 hours where we will not go above freezing. Yikes!  Since there won’t be any snow or freezing rain I’m hoping we get by without any power outages.

Well let’s take a look at some of the things that caught my eye recently that I thought were strange, odd or funny.

No beer – no Merry Christmas

Seems Helen Williams decided to send out her male friend to get some beer for celebratory reasons on Christmas Eve.  When the friend returned empty handed (the stores were closed after midnight) Helen was not happy.  Helen was really not happy.  Somewhere along the lines, the police were called and when they arrived at Helen’s house they found a man covered with blood.  Helen told the police the guy fell and cut himself.  The guy had a different story.

She told investigators the victim fell and cut himself, but she couldn’t explain why her hands and clothes were also bloody.

Deputies say the victim told officers Williams was so angry when he didn’t return with beer because stores were closed on Christmas Eve that she grabbed a ceramic squirrel, beat him in the head, then stabbed him in the shoulder and chest.

Williams remains in jail on a $10,000 bond. It wasn’t known if she had a lawyer.

All I got for Christmas were the lousy cans of tuna!

Little Carmen Lopez of Bothell Washington had one big wish for Christmas.  She wanted a set of Beats by Dre headphones.  Looking at der google, these things are apparently not cheap.  Carmen’s parents were able to purchase a set of them for her online at a Black Friday sale at Walmart and were able to save some money.  Cut to Christmas and when Carmen opens up her gift what she sees is this:

Yep.  Someone in the shipping dept. at good ole Walmart decided to take the headphones (worth between $100 and $200 dollars) and gave Carmen four cans of Chicken of the Sea.

Now Carmen’s dad had done the wonderful ship “site to store” where you order online and then your item is delivered to your neighborhood Walmart where you waltz in and pick your package up.  But this gets even better.  Remember that Dad bought them during a Black Friday sale.

That morning, Lopez went back to WalMart, but didn’t get the answer he was hoping for.

“Wal-Mart had said they would only give us a refund, at least the store did,” said Carmen. “That didn’t sound right, because I just want my headphones at this point. I was really looking forward to them.”

The other problem, the headphones aren’t on sale anymore. So a refund for the sale price isn’t enough for a new pair.

Well that’s just a Bah Humbug on Walmart’s part.  However this didn’t have a sad ending after all.

But Carmen won’t have to miss a beat in the meantime, because an executive with the headphones company is in town visiting her family right now.

“Last night my father and I were watching the news,” said Lindsay Merkle, the global account manager of sales for Beats by Dre. “I saw the unfortunate story of the tuna, and thought let’s solve this problem today.”

She has some of the company’s newest headphones with her, and she wants to donate a pair to Carmen.

“I can only imagine what was going through her head. So hopefully this will help her be a little bit happier and get something she was actually looking forward to on Christmas.”

Lindsay’s trying to figure out how to get the new headphones to the Lopez family. She says if she can’t take care of it while she’s here for the holidays, she’ll ask her mom to help with the delivery.

Lindsay Merkle: 3 cheers, Walmart:  a razzberry.

Pardon me, is this a convenient time to rob your store?

At least in Pompano Beach, if a robber is going to rob your CVS drug store he will be polite.  Hell, he’ll even wait around while you attend to customers!

The Sun Sentinel is reporting on a robber who waited patiently to rob a CVS in Pompano Beach, and was so calm and quiet about it that customers continued shopping around him, unaware they were witnesses to a holdup.

The crook, who is yet to be identified, walked into the pharmacy earlier this month, proceeded to show a gun and demanded money from a young clerk. The employee told the gunman that she needed to check with her manager first. Amazingly, the man waited for the manager to come to the front of the store, and even hung around as the cashier helped ring up an actual customer. (the mgr. is in the blue shirt)

WSVN 7 News reports that the store manager finally showed up and then was shown the gun and given the same demand for the money. However, he and the gunman then had to wait for the aforementioned customer’s order to be taken care of. The customer walked away with his purchased items, then the thief got his money.

And yes there’s a youtube video of it also:

Some assorted youtube clips

So is this global warming or just a normal, routine calving glacier where these two fellows got waaay to close.

I just call this one “Stay classy Alabama fan”.

Now the Alabama “fan” says she was responding to some of the Sooner fans taunting her and they were threatening her son.  Well someone else who was there had a video of Bama woman taunting the Sooner fans first by shooting them the bird and her son was taunting them with cheap talk.

Bama mom “apologized” somewhat:

Pritchett said she regrets that things escalated the way they did and said she wanted to apologize to “Bama nation.” Her biggest concern seemed to be what Coach Saban’s reaction would be when reporters question him about it.

Sorry Miz Pritchett but I’m taking the word of the Sooner folks.  When you Bama fans think you’re going to walk all over an opponent and it doesn’t turn out that way, y’all slightly lose your minds and cannot handle it.  Too bad.

And I have another video of…a doxie!  This time daddy is coming home from deployment and his little doxie girl just has a fit when he comes in.

Okay Widdershins, what’s the weather like today where you are?  Are you staying warm?  Are you waiting for the arctic blast second round?  Let me know in the comments.

Today’s high will be 79. However, we are expecting a 1 day cold front with a high of 63 and a low of 47 on Tuesday, then straight back up on Wednesday.
Good for the polite robber. Never let it be said that we have no manners down here.

Heh. I knew I should have just left your post up Chat. 80-something comments looks better than 2. 😆

Urban also threw the team under the bus last night. Said that the defense is just not championship caliber.

The local weather “gawd” up here is concerned about this:

FLASH FREEZE: One concern is that temperatures will fall from the 50s into the 20s in a very short amount of time (30 minutes or so). There will be water on roads from rain showers ahead of the Arctic front, and that standing water will turn to ice very quickly, leading to some icy spots on roads. I don’t think this will be widespread, but no doubt you will need to be very careful and look for “black ice” if you are traveling anywhere tomorrow night and Monday morning. And, where snow falls, that will generate some icy places as well.

The “flash freeze” should begin in the northwest corner of the state around 6:00 p.m.. and be near I-59 (Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Gadsden) around 8:00 p.m.

chat@3: Did lil Nicky do it again too? I never listened to his presser.

My Bama friend said he was okay with the loss. He said he heard Saban say that in the lockeroom at the half he “thought” they had a chance to pull it out but then he realized “they” just didn’t have it in them.

How bout this for both Urban and Nicky: You both failed to motivate your teams!

The falling glacier was scary. Those guys were nuts, getting that close, you could see the crack went high up. Saw the bama fan. Good grief, she did that in front of her kids? Loved the doxie. This is for Chat:

@annie: You know how I am about doxies. 🙂

@annie, yeah she dives into a group of Sooner fans and then kicks with her boots on and then before that was flashing them birds. Classy act all the way.

Showed Philly we could handle the cold weather!!!

Fredster, we just saw the Saints won, in the last couple of seconds. Nice.

@annie: I was on pins and needles the entire second half!!

@7: Thanks, Annie.
