Activist Wednesday: Promote Food Decay! And, K. Gill

Another Bad Idea

Hope you got a laugh from that title, Widdershins. I came across this petition and just had to share. (Reminds me of Uppity – she was always against the whole FrankenFood thing.) Apparently the geniuses are still at it, trying to inject The Goddess’ delicious fruit (MB’s favorite, by the way) with dodgy genetic “improvements.” You know what improves an apple? Cinnamon, butter, a crust, and…more apples. MMMMMMmmmmm.

A real apple improvement

But seriously folks…It’s pretty amazing that people would try to create a non-browning apple. Don’t we have bigger problems to solve, like, oh I dunno, global warming? Or how about K. Gill’s petition to establish real justice for victims of sexual assault in the military? We’ve talked about this before – it’s called the Military Justice Improvement Act. Since Republicans don’t like justice, or non-apple-related improvements of any kind, or apparently even the military (given how few of them have served), of course they are threatening a filibuster, according to K. Gill’s latest email. Doesn’t matter that public opinion is not on their side.

Six in 10 Americans support letting independent prosecutors decide whether to place charges in sexual assault cases in the U.S. military, removing such decisions from the traditional chain of command.

With a vote on the issue pending in the Senate, 59 percent in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll favor the proposed change. Thirty-six percent instead prefer to keep authority over sexual assault cases within the usual channels.

Ahhh, but here’s the rub (all emphasis mine):

There’s a larger difference ideologically: While about two-thirds of liberals and moderates alike support creating special prosecutors for military sexual assault cases, that declines to 48 percent of conservatives in this poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates.

Among other groups, preference for independent prosecutors is highest among college graduates (70 percent), dropping to 49 percent among those who haven’t gone beyond high school. There’s a sharp division between non-evangelical and evangelical white Protestants, 62 vs. 46 percent; the latter are more conservative politically. And support for the change ranges from 75 percent among strong critics of the Tea Party political movement to 44 percent of its strong supporters.

So almost half of conservatives support this change. Even almost half of Tea Party conservatives support it! No, sorry, I must think like a Congressional Republican. Clearly it is “less than half!!1111!!!” according to the same math that got Romney elected. Oh, wait….

All snarking aside, if you would like to add your voice to the latest petition calling for the Senate to support the Military Justice Improvement Act, please click the link below. And tell a friend or two!

I must admit that unblemished apple slices have never been a huge priority of mine,

Hmmm, for the millions who suffered a cut in their food stamps beginning Nov. 1st and soon to be rewarded with yet another cut in the upcoming round of sequestration equestration (treating our fellow Americans as livestock), a browned apple is better than no apple at all.

I’m a big fan of Sen. Gillibrand’s proposal. The military fights anything until they are forced to implement it. What I see is a pretty clean correlation between senators from states with a large military presence and opposition to the common sense of Sen. Gillibrand. Funny how that seems to happen?

Now honestly, if the military was all in a dither about sexual assaults of their soldiers, don’t you think they would have pursued a plan of action prior to being dragged kicking into a Senate hearing? The position of incremental change they always default to is a sorry excuse for what has been allowed to exist on the issue. To me, the military has forfeited their right to complain about changes in procedure.

I;d like to give a round of applause for Sen Warren’s CPI-E, as seniors have very different expenses and needs.

You should have seen Elizabeth Warren on Rachel Maddow list night… I was clear as Crystal that she will not be baited into leaving the Senate. She has an agenda and yesterday she Announced it. The Era of cutting Social Security & Medicare is over. She wants to lead that charge and she wants to do it in the senate. When Rachel even hinted at a possible she shut her down. I came her to talk about Social Security. Could not be clearer.

On the Health care side health care costs grew at 1.3% in the last year. the lowest rate of growth ever. The last time Growth was so low 1992-1993 when the Clinton’s led the charge for reform. This industry responds to threats of its existence that is clear. we need to get healthcare costs down to less than 10% of GDP.

It is nice to know that we can get Botox treatments & Face lifts faster than any country in the world but when it comes to life saving procedures we are worse off than our contemporaries.. This alone makes it clear this is a Healthcare system for the rich,of the rich, and by the rich. This system must be overhauled.

well in case you missed it:

As a former Military man that has seen how the Military rewards and punishes based on Commanding officer “tastes” I can say we need Judicial reform in the Military Justice system.

Sen. John McCain is wrong on this he needs to get with the program.

We’ll see how the amendment fares.
