Onion Soup

Onion Soup

Good Saturday to you Widdershins.  I hope your Saturday is turning out well.  We had the coldest night of the season so far this fall last night with temps dipping into the 20s in some areas.  However, the good ole weather bug tells me that by next week we’ll be back in the 70s for highs and lows only in the 50s before the next front pushes through.

Well this week was certainly a mess with the FUBAR’d healthcare website as Prolix so excellently described yesterday, but today we’ll just look at a few lighter or amusing things that caught my eye and a couple of youtube videos I think you might enjoy.

An inspiring story

90 year old George Horner who is a retired doctor got to make his stage debut with Yo-Yo Ma in what can only be described as an incredible performance.  George is a retired doctor who survived the Holocaust, being interned at Terezin.   Dr. Horner had the chance to play with Ma at a concern benefiting the Terezin Music Foundation which describes its mission as “dedicated to preserving the musical legacy of composers lost in the Holocaust and filling their unrealized artistic and mentoring roles with new commissions by emerging composers”.    Executive Director of the TMF, Mark Ludwig asked Dr. Horner to participate because he had played piano and accordion in the camp.

Horner played piano and accordion in the Terezin cabarets, including tunes written by fellow inmate Karel Svenk. On Tuesday, Horner will play two of Svenk’s works solo — a march and a lullaby — and then team up with Ma for a third piece called “How Come the Black Man Sits in the Back of the Bus?”

Svenk did not survive the genocide. But his musical legacy has, due in part to a chance meeting of Ludwig, a scholar of Terezin composers, and Horner, who never forgot the songs that were written and played in captivity.

Ma said that:

“To me George Horner is a huge hero, and is a huge inspiration,” Ma said. “He is a witness to a window, and to a slice of history, that we never want to see again, and yet we keep seeing versions of that all over the world. I hope we are inspired by that and we keep that memory forever.”

Horner was 21 when he was freed by Allied soldiers in 1945 after serving time at Terezin, Auschwitz and Buchenwald. His parents and sister perished in the camps.

And though his back still bears the scars of a Nazi beating, he remains spry and seems much younger than his 90 years.

When Horner found out about the duet with Ma, Ludwig said, “He was so excited, to me he sounded like a teenager.”

Going from the sublime to the ridiculous?

I guess that’s what we could call it.  Our fave pair of royals, Kate and Wills got a little gift for their son Georgie.  They bought him a new stroller or pram as they refer to it.  Of course it’s not an ordinary stroller, but rather a Silver Cross Balmoral pram which goes for the U.S. equivalent of around $2300.  This thing must be the Bentley or Rolls of strollers over there, from the description:

“This stunning pram is the perfect example of stately elegance and noble good looks, teamed with masterful engineering.” The pram also features “a reclining hood, matching protective apron, leather harness and a chrome shopping basket.”

Alas, John Lewis says that international shipping is not available, but don’t worry expectant Widdershins or soon-to-be doting grandparents, I found a place in Canada where you can get one and I’m sure the Canadian store will be glad to ship it across the border.

This was the guy in charge of keeping secrets?

Or maybe he was just the guy in charge of collecting them.  Either way Michael Hayden appears to have a big mouth.  Enough of a big mouth that he was bothering another passenger on the Acela Express, who decided to stat tweeting what loud mouth was saying.  That passenger was Tom Mattzie who was former Washington director of Political Action.  (uh-oh)

Former NSA spy boss Michael Hayden on Acela behind me blabbing “on background as a former senior admin official” Sounds defensive.

Hayden was bragging about rendition and black sites a minute ago.

Michael Hayden on Acela giving reporters disparaging quotes about admin. “Remember, just refer as former senior admin”

I think I’m safe. Just passed Philly. No rendition yet. Do I have the balls to ask him for a photo?

Well Tom got the photo but he wasn’t safe.  Apparently someone must have called Hayden and let him know what was going on.

Some cute youtube videos

Okay, this one is more a “nice” video.  A waitress at a Ruby Tuesday in Concord NH was working one day recently went two women from the National Guard were there for lunch and were talking about the furlough and the fact they weren’t going to get paid.  The waitress, Sarah Hoidahl decided to treat the two women.  Sarah herself is a single mother, living at home with her mom.  Word of this got to Ellen DeGeneres’ staff and you can see here what Ellen did.  Clip is about 5 mins. in length.

So what do you do when you have a 6 yr old who is throwing a tantrum?  Why have dad make fun of her of course.

This is a cute one:  hand-feeding and apparently ticking a very friendly platypus.

Okay Widdershins, if you are so inclined, leave a comment below to let me know how your day is going.

Love the Ellen bit!

The crock of french onion soup looks delish.

Sophie@1: Yeah that completely blew me away. However, she does always do that “be kind…” thing. And lordy, I’m sure Sarah could use the money.

chat: that pic, and the others I looked at has started a big time craving for French Onion soup. I don’t know which of the area restaurants have a decent one but perhaps I’ll start a tour of them to see which may have a good one.

We had a low of 68 last night. High today will be 84. Football schedule looks like a total snoozer.

I bumped this up from yesterday. We are now tied for yesterday’s number of comments.

I’m watching Tx Tech and Okie right now. Of course I’m really just waiting for the Idaho/Ole Miss game. Should be a barn-burner. (stop watching the vid after about the first min. 30 sec or so.)

We had a freeze last night. Game over.

And yes, that crock of onion soup looks very delish.

SophieCT@6: I know, with the soup!! Hmmm…we have a Ruby Tuesdays here and further down there’s an Applebys, Outback, O’Charleys and Logans steakhouse. Surely one of them has Fr. onion soup. Gotta check those online menus.

We had a sleet storm a few days ago. It feels like December here already. Cold and windy. That’s my weather report.

The onion soup looks good.

We’re waiting for IU’s first exhibition basketball game to start in about 30 minutes. Go Hoosiers!

The story about Dr. George Horner and Yo-Yo Ma was very touching. Bravo to them both.

Beata wins on the dreary weather report. And yes, go Hoosiers! (fixed my typo!)

@beata: I wondered about including that story on my “light” stuff day, but I thought it was an inspiring story. I didn’t know about the Terezin Music Foundation. A very noble cause there.

Ugly first half to the LSU game but they won.

I read about Terezin and the great musicians there years ago. What a nice story.

Congrats on your game, Fredster! How did the Dawgs do? Trojans won. Where was the fire in that game? What a weird pic.

The best onion soup I ever had was in Canada.

annie@13: I also knew about the musicians there at that camp but didn’t know about this foundation. There was a movie years ago about the camp, that I saw.

Chat’s Dawgs had a week off this week, we’ll be off next week. Congrats on the Trojans!!

That fire in the video was at Auburn in 1991. The fieldhouse caught fire and it never stopped the game! LOL!

Stop a football game for a fire? Not unless it’s on the field.

@15: LOL! 😆 At least in the South.

Ha! You football people are funny!

@17: Tee-hee! Don’t interfere with “the game”.
