Activist/Feminist Wednesday: Same As It Ever Was

Posted on: May 8, 2013

I’m back in historical mode today. Our topic: The media and women activists! I’m sure none of the tactics I bring up will be familar to you, since they happened way back in the 1850 and ’60s.

Here are some quotes and excerpts from various media sources post-Seneca Falls. [Source: Chapter 4 of Seneca Falls and the Origins of the Women’s Rights Movement.]

“…Personally repulsive, she [Susan B. Anthony] seems to be laboring under feelings of strong hatred towards male men, the effect we presume, of jealousy and neglect.” – The Utica Evening Telgraph

If demands for gender equality are met….”a petticoat government” would result, leading to women leading armies and naval fleets, and becoming governors and politicians. – The Middletown Constitution

Regarding Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s proposals about marriage and divorce (she thought women should be able to get divorced at will), her POV was “suicidal” (The New York Evening Post), “infidel and licentious,” and would turn the world “into one vast brothel” (The New York Observer).

About the First Annual Worcester Women’s Rights Convention:  “..a motley mingling of abolitionists, socialists, and infidels of all sexes and colors.” – The New York Herald

So let’s review. We have the following tactics:

Nope, not ringing any bells.

SOME sarcasm aside, I would like to point out that the world is pretty much going to hell, and has been headed in that direction for some time. (Well, unless you’re like, really rich and/or from a royal family somewhere in Europe.) I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to try a government with a few more petticoats.

Seems like more and more people agree. C’mon, Hillary, just be our President already!

This is an open thread.

Good to see you back, Mad/
This am I heard Lindsay Graham stridently blaming HRC for all of those deaths in Benghazi. Hmmm……..

Yes, I think the wingnuts can see the writing on the wall there. She is no longer SOS and has “retired from public life,” yet they are attacking her anyway. Must be some reason why they see her as a threat. 🙂

I seem to remember that when Donald Rumsfeld withdrew to his Carolinas Barrier Island he fell right off the radar. End of all investigations into his involvement in turning the US into a torturer, end of coverage about his role in anything.

But Hillary? ZOMG. Benghazi. Give ’em a few months and they’ll be running the same old tape all the way back to Vince Foster. Make shit up. Throw it at her.

It would be nice if she were President, and not after having to clean up yet one more goofball’s mess. But I’d never understand why she bothered.

Glad you are back MB!

Yes, pathetically fringe heir apparent to the Paul family’s megalomania, Rand, issued a statement laying all blame for Benghazi at the feet of Hillary stating, “She should be barred from ever holding office again.” Transparent much Rand?

It is interesting, where was the All Benghazi All the Time network during Dubya’s term? During Dubya’s term there were 60, yes, s-i-x-t-y, foreign service personnel killed in embassies during his eight years. Funny, I don’t recall a whimper about that.

I found this at, believe it or not, sodahead.

BUSH: 11 ATTACKS – 57 DEATHS

OBAMA: 2 ATTACKS – 5 DEATHS

Which President is better at protecting
our Embassies and Diplomats?

NUMBER OF CONGRESSIONAL INVESTIGATIONS: ZERO

Hi everyone! I’ve missed you all.

Yes, the VRWC is in full panic mode about Hillary becoming President. Obama has let them get away with quite a bit. Their long halcyon time is coming to an end….:-)

Well, this is what’s important these days:

Verdict reached in Jodi Arias murder trial and will be announced at 4:30 p.m. ET. Details coming

I think we can leave Jodi out of our petticoat government….;-)

I turned on the Benghazi hearing for a few minutes — one of the star witnesses is the guy who was charged with the safety and protection of the Libyan facilities. Now, check me here, but isn’t that the guy who was supposed to prepare for the possibility of attacks and didn’t these two embassy personnel and the two CIA hired mercenaries die on his watch? Strange that he is now seen as the virtuous martyr who now preaches truth and righteousness.

Prolix@9: You’re a better man than I Gunga Prolix! 🙂

@10, Gunga watching in the den was I.

Prolix@11: LOL!

Breaking news: Verdict on Jodi Arias GUILTY!

@5: That was probably all Hillary’s fault as well.

chat@13: It’s all Hillary’s fault.

I got caught in the rain today without my umbrella. It was Hillary’s fault.

Mystery series recommendation: The Seneca Falls Historical Mystery Series by Miriam Grace Monfredo.

The books are set in mid-19th century Seneca Falls, NY, and feature “charming spinster librarian” ( so-called by Publishers Weekly ) Glynis Tryon as the protagonist. The first mystery in the series is entitled “Seneca Falls Inheritance” and takes place during the 1848 First Women’s Rights Convention. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and other real-life historical figures appear in the stories. Good reads if you like historical mysteries.

Beata@16: Sounds interesting!

@5: Geez, Fredster, stop trying to make sense using facts. The hungry masses want rumors, innuendoes, and unflattering pics of Hillary. Not feckin’ facts.

Benghazi! Benghazi! Benghazi! And bags under Hillary’s eyes!

The high tree pollen count is all Hillary’s fault! D*mn her for my swollen eyes….:-)

Beata – OOOOH, a new series! Thank you for recommending. I will definitely check it out!

@9 – Reminds me of how Condi Rice, who was the National Security Advisor on 9/11, got promoted after the worst security failure in American history.

Beata@18: I’m sorry. 😦 I will refrain from the facts stuff from now on and just continue with mere speculation.

Funny how the “overwhelming evidence of a cover-up” turned out to be a big nothing burger, how EVERYTHING Issa said was a BIG FAT LIE. But you won’t hear the wingers apologizing–they’ll just double down like they do every damn time.

BTW: Good to “see” you again MB!!

Thanks Sophie. It is so great to have a second to stop by. This project has so much travel that I have a really hard time doing anything else…

@24 Hi MB! I’m having trouble with the German in Brahms’ Liebeslieder waltzes. It’s Hillary’s fault!

@25 – Oh honey, we have to blame the Germans for that one. German is impossible to sing in! “Ach, ich fuhl’s” – slow legato in the choppiest language ever…

@26 ROFL…you should try it when it’s fast! Gasping and screeching! Only German could make Brahms less than gorgeous. At least we’re doing the “How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place” from the Requiem in English. And, your namesake, Puccini’s “Humming Chorus” …no words to worry about on that one!

Awesome post, Blog Wife.

Hahaha, I never understood how anyone could sing those songs!
