Lazy Sunday Music: Catharsis

Posted on: April 21, 2013

Good Sunday, Widdershins.

After a week fraught with tensions, it’s time for large and frequent doses of musical catharsis.   Release those strong, repressed feelings through the music of any genre.  As far as I’m concerned, music is cathartic when you want to turn it up and chase the feeling away.  Then you know that you actually have a cathartic song.
The songs can be happy.

The songs can be sad.

The songs can be light,

The songs can be dark.

Whatever.  As long as turning it on and turning it up seems to lighten your load, it’s cathartic.  Here are mine, in no particular order in this otherwise open thread.

(1) Troy – Sinead O’Connor, 1987

(2) Forget You – Cee Lo Green, 2010

(3) Piano Concert 2, Opus 18 – Rachmaninoff,1900-01

(4) Hallelujah – Jeff Buckley. 1994

(5) Learning to Fly – Pink Floyd,1987

Joyous maybe?

O Freunde, nicht diese Töne!
Sondern laßt uns angenehmere anstimmen,
und freudenvollere.
Freude! Freude!

Freude, schöner Götterfunken
Tochter aus Elysium,
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
Deine Zauber binden wieder
Was die Mode streng geteilt;
Alle Menschen werden Brüder,
Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.
Wem der große Wurf gelungen,
Eines Freundes Freund zu sein;
Wer ein holdes Weib errungen,
Mische seinen Jubel ein!
Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
Sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund!
Und wer’s nie gekonnt, der stehle
Weinend sich aus diesem Bund!
Freude trinken alle Wesen
An den Brüsten der Natur;
Alle Guten, alle Bösen
Folgen ihrer Rosenspur.
Küße gab sie uns und Reben,
Einen Freund, geprüft im Tod;
Wollust ward dem Wurm gegeben,
Und der Cherub steht vor Gott.
Froh, wie seine Sonnen fliegen
Durch des Himmels prächt’gen Plan,
Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn,
Freudig, wie ein Held zum Siegen.
Seid umschlungen, Millionen!
Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!
Brüder, über’m Sternenzelt
Muss ein lieber Vater wohnen.
Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen?
Ahnest du den Schöpfer, Welt?
Such’ ihn über’m Sternenzelt!
Über Sternen muss er wohnen.
Finale repeats the words:
Seid umschlungen, Millionen!
Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!
Brüder, über’m Sternenzelt
Muss ein lieber Vater wohnen.
Seid umschlungen,
Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!
Freude, schöner Götterfunken
Tochter aus Elysium,
Freude, schöner Götterfunken

Oh friends, not these tones!
Rather, let us raise our voices in more pleasing
And more joyful sounds!
Joy! Joy!

Joy, beautiful spark of divinity
Daughter of Elysium,
We enter, drunk with fire,
Into your heavenly sanctuary!
Your magic reunites
What custom strictly divided.
All men will become brothers,
Where your gentle wing rests.
Whoever has had the great fortune
To be a friend’s friend,
Whoever has won a devoted wife,
Join in our jubilation!
Indeed, whoever can call even one soul,
His own on this earth!
And whoever was never able to, must creep
Tearfully away from this band!
Joy all creatures drink
At the breasts of nature;
All good, all bad
Follow her trail of roses.
Kisses she gave us, and wine,
A friend, proved in death;
Pleasure was to the worm given,
And the cherub stands before God.
Glad, as His suns fly
Through the Heaven’s glorious design,
Run, brothers, your path,
Joyful, as a hero to victory.
Be embraced, millions!
This kiss for the whole world!
Brothers, above the starry canopy
Must a loving Father dwell.
Do you bow down, millions?
Do you sense the Creator, world?
Seek Him beyond the starry canopy!
Beyond the stars must He dwell.
Finale repeats the words:
Be embraced, you millions!
This kiss for the whole world!
Brothers, beyond the star-canopy
Must a loving Father dwell.
Be embraced,
This kiss for the whole world!
Joy, beautiful spark of divinity,
Daughter of Elysium,
Joy, beautiful spark of divinity

The Lark Ascending – Vaughan Williams

The Lark Ascending is a work by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, inspired by George Meredith’s 122-line poem of the same name about the skylark. He included this portion of Meredith’s poem on the flyleaf of the published work:

He rises and begins to round,
He drops the silver chain of sound,
Of many links without a break,
In chirrup, whistle, slur and shake.

For singing till his heaven fills,
‘Tis love of earth that he instils,
And ever winging up and up,
Our valley is his golden cup
And he the wine which overflows
to lift us with him as he goes.

Till lost on his aerial rings
In light, and then the fancy sings.

There was a very nice version of the 9th 4th mvmt with lyrics but it had atrocious cuts in it so I could not stand to put it here. Just terrible version.

I would have been none the wiser, I fear.

Because it needs to be part of the permanent record for this week:

@9: Great choice, Sophie.

Levity can also be cathartic.

@1 Fredster, thank you so very much for taking the time to publish both the German and English translation of Beethoven’s great ode.

Beata and Chat, thanks for the Beach Boys. You simply cannot be unhappy while listening to them.

I am dancing “The Swim” to this. I tried doing “The Pony” with my partner but my cat refused to cooperate. Party pooper.

@19 Mine (rest her little cat soul) would have clawed me to death if I tried to dance with her. She was a bit skittish.

@20. Ouch

Mary Luke@17: Happy to do so. 🙂

Hey, classical is supposed to be mine!!!

@23- There’s plenty to go around.

@25 Gorgeous, DYB. What a trio! I saw Frederika with Kiri Te Kanewa in a joint concert in Boston several years ago. She was the best mezzo since Rise Stevens, I think.

What a great selection of songs today.

@33 Thank you Beata.

Nah…we acknowledge your specialty in opera and vocal stuff but hey, I didn’t get that degree in music for nothing! Well, uh, actually I did – never used it for anything really.
