The Widdershins

No, he’s not going to have plural wives and Ann won’t have to worry about a sister wife unless that’s what she considers Janna Ryan will be on the campaign trail.

No…Mittens has picked his  vice-presidential running mate.  His choice was grown-up Eddie Munster, uh Paul Rand, uh, Ayn Paul..oh shit!  Paul Ryan!  Geez.

Yes, Mitt has picked Mr. Conservative of Wisconsin, the deficit meister as his veep choice.  Moreover, they should be a pretty good pair: One likes to fire people and the other wants to take away the old folks’ medicare so they can just go off somewhere, wither away and die since the only thing they’ll have to get insurance with is a lousy voucher to buy insurance on the open market.   Yes, it’s Mister Ryan of the draconian budgets who wants to slice and dice Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid (changing that one to block grants to the states) and a host of other items that the other side likes to call “entitlement issues”, yet touch nary a hair of Defense.

I’m sure we are all aware of who Mr. Ryan’s philosophic mentor was, Ayn Rand and a central tenet of her philosophy was objectivism.  Wiki description of objectivism:

Objectivism’s central tenets are that reality exists independent of consciousness, that human beings have direct contact with reality through sense perception, that one can attain objective knowledge from perception through the process of concept formation and inductive logic, that the proper moral purpose of one’s life is the pursuit of one’s own happiness (or rational self-interest), that the only social system consistent with this morality is full respect for individual rights embodied in laissez faire capitalism, and that the role of art in human life is to transform humans’ metaphysical ideas by selective reproduction of reality into a physical form—a work of art—that one can comprehend and to which one can respond emotionally.

Said Ms Rand herself:

My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.

Of interest to me were these comments:

According to one Rand biographer, most people first read Rand’s works in their “formative years“. Rand’s former protégé Nathaniel Branden referred to Rand’s “especially powerful appeal to the young, while Onkar Ghate of the Ayn Rand Institute said Rand “appeals to the idealism of youth. This appeal has alarmed a number of critics of the philosophy. Many of these young people later abandon their positive view of Rand and are often said to have “outgrown” her ideas. Supporters of Rand’s work recognize the phenomenon, but attribute it to the loss of youthful idealism and inability to resist social pressures for intellectual conformity. In contrast, Jennifer Burns says some critics “dismiss Rand as a shallow thinker appealing only to adolescents,” although Burns thinks the critics “miss her significance” as a “gateway drug” to right-wing politics.  Well now…isn’t that interesting?  So could we say that possibly Rand’s philosophy appeals to the younger folk at a certain period of their self-centeredlives and then, possibly, their critical thinking skills evolve beyond that?  In other words, could it be that Paul Ryan’s philosophies are *stuck*?  Although I can see how this Randian glorification of the “me” “self” over society would appeal to Republicans.

So Mr. Ryan, by his own philosophical way of thought has decided that all of these draconian cuts must be made to the federal budget and entitlements.  Except, it seems, when it comes to his and his family’s interests.

From The Daily Beast of last year:

It turns out a constituency within his own personal investments stood to benefit from those tax breaks, Newsweek and The Daily Beast have learned.

The financial disclosure report Ryan filed with Congress last month and made public this week shows he and his wife, Janna, own stakes in four family companies that lease land in Texas and Oklahoma to the very energy companies that benefit from the tax subsidies in Ryan’s budget plan.

Ryan’s father-in-law, Daniel Little, who runs the companies, told Newsweek and The Daily Beast that the family companies are currently leasing the land for mining and drilling to energy giants such as Chesapeake Energy, Devon, and XTO Energy, a recently acquired subsidiary of ExxonMobil

Ryan’s office says the congressman wasn’t thinking about himself or the oil companies that lease his land when he drafted the budget blueprint that extended the energy tax breaks. “These are properties that Congressman Ryan married into,” spokesman Kevin Seifert said. “It’s not something he has a lot of control over.”(Please note the “blame the wife’s family comment)

Nonetheless, the properties have been a lucrative investment for Ryan and his wife, earning them as much as $117,000 last year, and $60,000 the year before, his personal financial disclosure reports show. Overall, Ryan, 41, listed assets worth between $590,000 and $2.5 million, putting him in the top third of the richest members of the House.

I was playing around with some  stuff on the computer, or rather trying to add things to it and somehow I made a big ole mess!  😯

I’m on a borrowed computer right now to get this done and I think mine is trying to fix itself after a couple of restores and such.  I only hope I don’t loose a lot of docs and things.

However, I will have a post up later today come hell or high water.

Sowwy.   😦
