Evening Widdershins: The Widdershins Lounge is Open!

Katniss faces her moment of truth

Seen any good movies lately, all? Now that I live in the semi-suburbs, I am actually able to go to movies on their opening weekend without standing in line overnight. 😆 Last weekend, I went to see “The Hunger Games.”

I did read all three books in the series by Suzanne Collins, and found them imaginative, wonderfully written, and rather feminist in orientation. The story of a young girl who holds on to her humanity in the face of a brutal, unfeeling dystopia that is trying to kill her (literally in this case)…well, what could be more evocative of the modern War On Women? The books could be interpreted in many ways, but I did think that at the core, it was about the idea of the traditionally “feminine” values of nesting, community and peace, combating with the traditionally “masculine” values of travel, self-promotion and conflict. (I also saw some hommages to Ray Bradbury in the series, which made me appreciate it even more.)

All this is to say that the movie more than did justice to the books. The female protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, is played by the young actress Jennifer Lawrence (best known for the well-beloved indie “Winter’s Bone,”) who truly seems to fathom the depth of the character she is playing. Memorable appearance are made by Donald Sutherland, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Smart and Wes Bentley (of “American Beauty”). The boys warring for Katniss’ heart are played by young hunks I am far too old to appreciate. 😉

In any case, in honor of the triumphant screen arrival of a new young feminist character, let’s serve some drinks and munch some popcorn and other movie snacks. Don’t be mad, Widdershins, but hubby and I are going on a date tonight, so I won’t be around much. You have my permission to play nicely without “Mommie,” as Fredster called me. Just don’t stain the carpets too much, especially if Uppity stops by with her famous chicken marsala! 😆

This is an open thread…and may the odds be ever in your favor.

I may be in and out also as I have some LSU baseball available to watch tonight.

Hey there, just dropping in. Holy moly, the Lotto is huge tonight! Hubby bought a group ticket. If they win, he’ll clean up with about $35 million post-tax. Crazy, crazy money! (He’ll probably leave me for a younger woman. LOL!)

MB It’s over a half billion now, closer to (as of the evening news) something like $640 mill.

I remember earlier in the year Powerball raised their ticket prices to $2 with the idea of creating bigger jackpots and here’s Mega Millions is the one now with the big pot of cash.

Just checked, powerball is a measly 60 million. Chump change. 😆

Yep, I’m playing in the office pool and bought a few tix for myself. But let’s not get our hopes up! I think chances of being hit by a meteor while square-dancing are higher than winning this thing.

Did not see Hunger Ganmes, but my daughter came home last weekend with 3 of her chums from college just to go see them at the theater here (and also do laundry for free and eat home cooked food). Of course they loved it. I tried to read the first book on my daughter’s advice, but I couldn’t get through it. I’ll give it another go.

The last good movie I saw was Midnight in Paris. Twice. It was that good.

We bought ten tickets last night. We had fun imagining what we would do with the money.

janicen@6: We had fun imagining what we would do with the money.

You mean after everybody keels over in shock?

I never win anything – seriously. I’ve given up buying tickets. I have a friend who wins small amounts every week and she refuses to buy a ticket for me because she thinks it will spread my bad luck to her. Geebus, I can’t win.
I know there’s a lot of hype re the Hunger Games and I have to admit that I haven’t read the books, but it sounds a lot like the premise of an early Arnold movie – had to look it up on the movie Database – The Running Man. Twas a game show environment yet again. One other note that I found disquieting, while checking out the name of the movie on IMDB, I noted that Arnold was involved in no less than four movies that were designated “post production” meaning that they were completely filmed and were at the editing stage. Now that is disquieting. Actors to politicians to actors.
Give me a single malt Glenmorrangie staight up – perhaps I need more. If this is what governing has come to, just give me the whole bottle and shoot me when I’m within an inch of the bottom.

The last good book along these lines that I read was The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I was disappointed with the movie version – the first one. Haven;t seen the second one.

Janice – Midnight in Paris? I’ll have to check it out. Thanks.

HT: Reach over behind the bar and help yourself. It’s self-service tonight. 😉 Mad’s on a date with hubby and I’m watching LSU baseball.

I guess “Ahnold” needed to get back to making some real money after being guv.

Thanks Fredster, don’t mind if I do! I’m watching Mr Wong on youtube so that will be a perfect evening. (the original Mr Wong – Boris Karloff). I’m not a sports follower however good luck to whatever team you are rooting for. And give Chloe a hug for me and one for Milly, the insane dog that shares my home.

HT: It’s college baseball, LSU. They usually have a pretty good baseball team and I do like college baseball.

Give Milly a hug back from me and Chloe.

Did you see the news about Olbermann getting axed? Couldn’t have happened to a more deserving guy.

HT, It’s an awesome movie, and it’s available on netflix already. Let me know when you see it. I’m going to bet you love it as much as I did.

BTW, I didn’t win the mega millions. Not even a match of 3 numbers. I don’t know if there was a winner, but I know it wasn’t me!

Olbermann got axed? No I didn’t see that. On one hand I’m cheering because of his history – on the other hand I’m a wondering what is happening. I don’t suppose we shall ever know the truth of the situation. Law suits pending I’m sure.

Janicen, if it’s on netflix, I’m watching based on your recommendation of course. Thanks!
Sorry you didn’t win the millions. Hope that I didn’t jinx you by posting in the same thread – I really am the kiss of death to lady luck.

janicen@13: Well so far nothing on the website about whether there was a winner or not.

Geez, even the cash option was incredible: $450 million.

Oh no, HT. I have only bought a ticket a few times, when the jackpot gets huge, but I’ve never won a nickel at the lottery.

I’ve also discovered a wonderful author recently. She’s been around a little while, but I’ve only just discovered Louise Penny. I swept through her books and I cannot wait until the release of the next one in August. I’ve turned two friends on to her and they feel the same way. She writes murder mysteries but it’s the characters you’ll fall in love with.

If there’s a winner, Fredster, I hope it’s a group of people so many families benefit.

Janicen, I’ll check out Louise Penny too – I love mysteries!

Good night all, and thanks for the cammaderie – and the scotch too Fredster. See you Sunday for the music interlude, or at the next lounge!

Good night. I’m headed to bed myself. Thanks for the company!

If there’s a winner, Fredster, I hope it’s a group of people so many families benefit.

That would be nice janicen. Hell, they might be able to get back to a “middle-class” life, where you have your house, save some, be able to put the kids through college, have health insurance!
