Feminist Friday: Laughter Is Good Medicine

Posted on: March 23, 2012

So we know that laughter won’t replace ACTUAL medicine, but sometimes it helps. A lot!

For example, you’ve got to love these women legislators who are trying to find ways to point out to the ignorant old white men who want to control them, exactly why what they’re doing is wrong, wrong, wrong. I wish I had half the creativity of these fine ladies. You go, girls!

• An Illinois legislator, Kelly Cassidy, proposed that men seeking Viagra be required to watch a video showing the treatment for persistent erections, saying “It’s not a pretty procedure to watch.”

• A Wisconsin legislator running for Congress, Kelda Helen Roys, proposed an amendment that any man seeking a prescription for Viagra have a cardiac stress test first.

• In Virginia, Senator Janet Howell proposed not just cardiac stress tests but rectal exams for men seeking Viagra. Howell’s amendment failed by two votes, part of the chaotic debate on the proposal to require transvaginal ultrasounds for women seeking abortions.

• In Missouri, Representative Stacey Newman moved to restrict vasectomies except for men at risk of death or serious bodily harm.

• In Ohio, a bill introduced by Senator Nina Turner would require men seeking Viagra to see a sex therapist and receive counseling about “pursuing celibacy as a viable lifestyle choice.”

• When a zygote-personhood bill came before the Oklahoma Senate, Senator Constance Johnson proposed an amendment that said ejaculating anywhere outside a woman’s vagina constitutes “an action against an unborn child.”

I think my favorite is the Ohio bill, because it captures so perfectly that queasy sense of 13th-century morality which permeates all these endless, hectoring condemnations of women for GASP! wanting to have sex without having children, or deciding not to GASP! carry a child to term when pregnant.

The great cartoonist Garry Trudeau, the creator of “Doonesbury,” has also attempted to find humor in the unspeakable with his cartoon series, “Shaming Room.” In my mind, it’s simply the truth; but many newspapers refused to run it, saying it was “over the top.”

Portland’s Oregonian was one of the 60 some newspapers who pulled the strips, and explained their decision to pull the comic as follows:

“Doonesbury” is a venerable comic strip, and over the years we have resisted calls to remove it or move it to the editorial page. The reason: It’s a comic strip and even though he delves into political satire, it is still a comic strip.

But in next week’s strip, “Doonesbury” author Garry Trudeau, in our judgment, went over the line of good taste and humor in penning a series on abortion using graphic language and images inappropriate for a comics page.

While we rarely pull strips for taste reasons, this was a clear call for the editors of the paper and for some other papers around the country, which also sent readers online to see the strip. Other papers moved them to other sections of the paper. “

The Oregonian’s decision to pull the strip was met with a whopping 96.31% DISapproval rating from their readership. Gosh, you’d think these self-styled morality police were out of touch with the majority of Americans!

Whatever we have to do to get us through the week, my friends. So here’s to laughter in the face of hatred and ignorance…and tonight, we’ll have an adult beverage or two to ease us into the weekend, courtesy of Fredster!

This is an open thread.

I agree with Ms. Cassidy. The treatment for priapism should be sufficient to make the average man think twice, if he were to engage the appropriate head.

I’ve come to the conclusion that with the advance of the Tea Party movement, some of the electorate despise the idea of a black president enough that they would vote into office some of the craziest people on the planet to represent them.

Most of these despicable laws have been introduced and passed by Republican held legislatures and signed by Republican governors whose aim it is to punish women, children, gays, seniors, under a cloak of “religious rights” which plays well with those convinced that the current occupant of the WH is a secret Muslim with nefarious designs.

These fools have found their way into federal law making via congress and govern with a “scorched earth” policy in turning state laws into federal mandates. Planned Parenthood being their current top priority.

Come November it will be interesting to see how many of these Tea Party idiots are voted out but I have a hunch they will not be. These are regional districts and it is apparent as of now that some folks are quite content to sit back and watch these people dismantle any and all social safety nets they deem “ungodly”.

That being the case, it will take another whole generation of progressive thinkers – if there are any left – to correct the laws currently in place that hamper women.

With education on the chopping block, and schools allowed to teach Creationism as part of the curriculum, one can only imagine what a future voter will look and sound like from years of repressive, non thinking instruction.

Couple the fundies with an open spigot of money falling from the hands of wealthy “special interests” this current state of affairs may be the government we live with for the next 20 years.

@1 – LOL Chatblu!

@2 – For some reason, fundies are obsessed with passing laws oppressing women. In fact, they will ignore their own self-interest to elect candidates who will put these laws into the state legislatures.

Is it really in any voter’s self-interest not to have universal health care, for example? No. Yet because they feel it is so important that women not have abortions or the Pill, they will put up with the death of their own family members from lack of health insurance, in order to have their twisted version of morality prevail.

I just cannot understand these people. I never will.

@3: I’m perplexed. How can a party so obsessed with “small government” be so obsessed with policing? You can own a blue million rocket launchers, but woe be unto you if you’re found with a packet of Yaz.

I agree with OWS. Shit is fucked up and bullshit.

I long for the day when our government is free from the clutches of the Koch brothers and their ilk. My ancestors came to this country in the early 20th century to enjoy the freedom not available in their European homeland and now, in the 21st century, that freedom no longer exists here. What cognitive dissonance these fanatics must experience as they shout “Freedom!” from the rooftops all the while scheming to deny it of others.

Those bills are hilarious! And quite appropriate. There should be more of them!

@6> You are right, janicen. Freedom to them means freedom to oppress those who don’t agree with them, I suppose.

I liked my idea of having a women legislator submit a bill that would require men to have a prostate ultrasound before getting a script for Viagra, Cialis or other meds because sometimes prostate issues can be the reason their weenies won’t work right. And the prostate ultrasound has to, yep, go right up their bum.

Kevin Smith was on Piers Morgan, talks about his gay brother.

Smith talks about Sanatorium and porn, same show.

I just read the series of strips from Doonesbury and didn’t see anything wrong them. Of course I’ll admit that I’m biased in this.

Absolutely agree. What is wrong is the legislation!

I just realized that I was supposed to do a Lounge tonight! Crap.

Oh well. I guess I’ll. have a beer and watch “Fairly Legal.”

MB@12: I was wondering about the Lounge.

I like Suits. The younger guy is just so cute!! 🙂
