Now what are we going to do?  Is nothing sacred? Rick Santorum is just beside himself about the entire prospect of openly gay service members utilizing communal showers.  I suspect that the whole showering thing was vastly different under DADT, at least in that fevered, musty canyon that passes as Santorum’s mind.  I am not, repeat not, making this up.  Check it out, from The Huffington Post:

WASHINGTON — Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum doubled down on his recent comments opposing allowing gay soldiers to serve in the U.S. military, invoking the image of soldiers showering together to explain his support for reinstating the discriminatory “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

“The problem is that sexual activity with people who you are in close quarters with who happen to be of the same sex is different than being open about your sexuality,” Santorum said on “Fox News Sunday.”

Fox host Chris Wallace pushed back, asking Santorum if he was suggesting gay soldiers would “go after” their colleagues.

“They’re in close quarters, they live with people, they obviously shower with people,” Santorum said, saying the presence of gay soldiers could have an adverse “effect on retention and recruitment”.

Well, alert the media.  Not only will “they” be showering with people, “they” will also be living with people, too.  Next thing you know, “they’ll” be eating with and talking to people as well.  The interview gets better (or worse, depending upon both your perspective and your level of snark):

Wallace played a clip of Santorum insisting during a recent Republican primary debate that the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” was an improper injection of “social policy” into the armed forces. Wallace then presented a quote from a former military official to Santorum and asked whether he agreed with its basic idea: “The army is not a sociological laboratory. … Experiments … are a danger to efficiency, discipline and morale and would result in ultimate defeat.”

Santorum, looking uncomfortable, said that he did agree with the general idea of the statement. Wallace then revealed that the quote was from Colonel E.R. Householder, a World War II-era official whose comments were made in opposition to the racial integration of the military.

Santorum responded by attempting to distinguish between racial discrimination and discrimination based on sexual orientation, denouncing the former, while insisting the latter is an acceptable condemnation of inappropriate “behavior.”

“It’s not the same thing,” Santorum said. “You are black by the color of your skin. You are not homosexual, necessarily, by the color of your skin.”

I am fascinated by the entire interview, in much the same way as staring at a horrific crash.  I don’t want to read it, yet somehow I just can’t stop reading the damned thing.

You are not “necessarily”  homosexual by the color of your skin?  WTH?  Has anyone ever seen a credible ratio, a correlation, or anything whatsoever that ties sexual preference to race or national origin?  I be willing to go way out on a limb and speculate that the numbers would likely be reflective of the population as a whole. Also, since when is taking a shower considered to be “sexual activity”?   Furthermore, who died and made Senator Santorum the Amy Vanderbilt of appropriate behavior?  Especially in light of the whole dead infant affair…..

So, riddle me this Senator – do you think that “their” bunkmates want “them” to go without showering for extended periods of time?  Should “they” just drown”themselves” in copious amounts of aftershave?  Should the Army, say just run “them” through a carwash with the deuce and a halfs?  Perhaps just put “them” on the swim team?  Whatcha got in mind here, Senator?

This is an open thread.
