About The Widdershins

Widdershins means to take a course opposite that of the sun, going counterclockwise, left hand-wise, or to circle an object, by always keeping it on the left.

The term “widdershins” was especially common in Lowland Scots, and was known in Scottish Gaelic as tuathal, or “left-hand-wise.” It uses the same root as tuath meaning countryside, originally tribal-land, folk, people.

“Merlin says that one shouldn’t go widdershins around the mistletoe lest one end up in the Fairy realm.”

Welcome to The Widdershins! We are a mostly left-leaning community that was founded by bloggers who were orphaned by the hostile takeover of the Democratic Party in 2008 under the mantra of “Hope” and “Change” by decidedly non-liberal forces. These autocrats were aided by one of the most disciplined propaganda machines that this country has ever seen. They infiltrated the party, the mainstream media, and the so called “progressive blogosphere” that many of us had wrongly assumed to be just that, progressive.

We initially fought back, starting our own blogs and pushing for the candidate who best represented our party’s values, and the core principles that it stood for: Hillary Clinton. And despite the non-stop propaganda, and being called racists and closeted Republicans, we eventually prevailed. Hillary Clinton received a clear majority of votes from registered Democrats in the country.

Unfortunately, the Party leadership had other plans. On May 31, 2008, they met in Washington, DC behind closed doors and overturned the will of the voters. They selected the inferior candidate that did not represent average Democrats. They wanted a candidate that represented them. In the end they got him. For us, it was the end of the road. The Democratic Party as we knew it was gone.

After the election, we took refuge with like-minded friends. But as with any alliance, after the war is over, old comrades tend to drift apart and new friends come together.

The bloggers at The Widdershins would like to invite you to join us in an ongoing conversation about politics, economics, culture, art, or any other thing that might pop into your head. And, we would like to invite you to turn our anger, frustration or outrage into action! We are going to provide some outlets and suggestions for both feet-on-the-street and online activism. And we welcome your suggestions as well.

We don’t have any rules about being a member of this community other than showing respect and civility to those that you meet here. If you are reading this, we hope that you will take a moment to see what we’re all about, and maybe throw in your two cents as well.

Thank you for visiting!
