SATURDAY LIGHT FARE
Posted August 17, 2013on:
Good Saturday to you Widdershins! I hope this finds you well today. We have been having some unseasonably coolish weather the last couple of days. Friday the high was only in the upper 70s and the morning low was in the low 60s. Incredible for August in the South! With that being said, lets take a look at a few things that crossed my journeys across the internets this week.
Betcha won’t find this at a garage sale
Young Alexander Kettler, aged 10, was playing in his grandmother’s attic when he found some old, dusty boxes. Probably one of a kid’s better things to do is rooting around in old stuff and playing pretend. Alexander though, found something really neat and spiffy: a sarcophagus and possibly a genuine Egyptian mummy! Probably extremely cool for Alexander and also probably a parent’s worst nightmare: my child finds a body! Also discovered were a death mask and a canopic jar. Alexander’s father Lutz believes the items may have belonged to his father who was in North Africa in the 1950s.
While it is currently believed that the mask and jar are replicas, Lutz Wolfgang thinks the mummy may be real, and will be transporting it to Berlin for further tests. If it is real, Egyptian authorities will attempt to bring it back to Egypt, after seeing if it left the country by legal means or if it was stolen from a museum.
Things sure are getting tight with the sequester and all
No, it’s not supposed to be due to the sequester but a herd of goats has been unleashed on Capitol Hill. No, not the old goats in the House and Senate, but rather a herd of the animal variety. The goats were brought to the Congressional Cemetery to try to clean it up in an environmentally friendly way.
A herd of more than 100 of the four-legged creatures will be grazing this week at Congressional Cemetery — where luminaries including J. Edgar Hoover and John Philip Sousa repose — as part of a demonstration project to show off the animals’ ecologically friendly landscaping skills.
Spectators are invited to watch as they chew through invasive species, “eliminating vines, poison ivy, ground cover and even fallen debris all the while fertilizing the ground,” promise the organizers of the event, the nonprofit Association for the Preservation of Historic Congressional Cemetery and Annapolis-based Eco-Goats.
Hey it’s got to be better than when the *other* old goats are there and Congress is in session.
I guess this could be called an “oopsie”
Either real estate is really booming in Benidorm, Spain or there is an architect there who is suffering from a severe case of short-term memory loss.
I say that because there is a sky-scraper apartment building going up that originally started as a twenty story building but then was increased to forty-seven floors. The problem is that he or she did not include an elevator or two.
According to a story surfaced on Gizmodo, the luxury high-rise tower, which started construction in 2007, was originally designed for 20 floors. But the the developers decided to push the design to include 47 floors with 269 homes. When completed, it will be Benidorm’s highest building at 650 feet.
There seemed to be just one important oversight: In going up to 47 floors, designers forgot to take into account room for an elevator shaft. El Pais reports that the architects on the project resigned in May 2012.
I don’t care if the original building was only going to be twenty stories. Even that would have needed an elevator! Still worse, the company that was building the thing and the bank that provided construction financing both went bankrupt in 2009.
“We had heard reports on the elevator last week when we listed the building to generate advance interest,” wrote Terry Walker, a spokesperson for Walker Property Spain’s London office, in an email to Yahoo News.
“In the light of the other problems that have been overcome at Intempo, we would be confident that a solution can be found,” Walker said.
All I can say is good luck with that bud. Take a look at the picture.
The building looks like two columns with a space ship between them! If your apartment is in the space ship how do you get to an elevator that they’re obviously going to have to retrofit in there? Duh!
A couple of cute youtube videos
This first video is just too cute! It’s a video of a mottled owl that has the longest eye lashes and she or he loves to bat them!
At first I thought it was some kind of toy or something until it turned it head.
Meet little Sammy Horowitz who probably just had the best or most expensive bar mitzvah evah! This was just the opening dance number at the shindig! Oy!
Okay Widdershins, how is your day going today? Let me know in the comments below. Of course this is an open thread.
