STOP THE WORLD, I WANT TO GET OFF!
Posted on: December 31, 2012
I’m finding it more and more discouraging to wake up each morning to listen to the latest news broadcasts that feature a world in constant peril as we rotate along without benefit of a moral compass leading the way.
You may as well forget that congress was once considered a “deliberative body” with elected officials meeting to serve the needs of “we the people”. In more recent times what we have witnessed is nothing more than a “power play” of one-upmanship when a minority Senate “leader” indicated that his focus would be on making the current POTUS a “one term president”. Priorities, priorities!
The “war on women” continues along with the latest atrocity occurring in India where a young woman was violently raped on a bus by 6 men which led to her death as a result of her injuries. This horrific event brought to mind the insane renderings of U.S. candidates for office who declared that rape should be considered a “blessing” if it resulted in pregnancy which is again illustrative of the sheer stupidity of some of the mindset women must confront on a daily basis.
Seldom does a day go by that some GOP state legislature is not “busy” chipping away at more rights. The right to vote, the right to collective bargaining, the right of a woman to choose, and the right to healthcare access. Brilliant!
In the wake of the Sandy Hook School shootings gun sales have increased. Some lawmakers are proposing that what is needed is more guns in classrooms with armed guards roaming the halls. As if this alone would not invite some “eager cowboy” an opportunity to play “shoot ‘em up” as kids run for cover in a replay of the O.K. Corral. What are these people thinking?
Some moron representing the Catholic Church has placed the ills of the world on women who are not living up to his notion of what it takes to be a “good wife”. Understand this is coming from a man who has chosen to live the single life but whose “knowledge” in this area is sought out for advice. Give me a break!
For real insanity one need go no further than the Mideast where one tyrant is murdering his citizens by any means available to keep himself in power. Another country is building atomic weapons for the purpose of “smiting” its enemies while another is intent on building even more settlements in occupied lands all the while demanding “peace” with its foes.
While we are involved in “building” the Afghan infrastructure, some of its citizenry are bent on blowing up our troops along with the roads and schools we insist are necessary to bring this Stone Age country into the 21st century. As an example of these “good intentions”, the opposition shot a teen aged girl in the head when she spoke out about wanting something as simple as an education. But we continue this charade of “nation building” in a country that basically wants no part of it. The billions spent on this futile exercise is nothing short of absolute insanity.
With all the world’s resources you would think that we could all act together to make this planet a better place. But you would be wrong! We prefer to spend our time arguing over senseless “slights” that occurred centuries ago which were just as stupid then as they are now.
One would think that the power of technology would serve as a benefit to mankind at large. But new technology introduces more “sophistication” for developing even more powerful weapons of mass destruction that threaten the planet and leaves us even more vulnerable. So much for the “gains” in this area
As of tomorrow we arrive at another New Year. Yet women are still considered second class citizens, the ice caps are melting, deliberate ignorance has overtaken commonsense, and “the powers that be” have done nothing but thrive on the chaos. We really don’t seem to care very much about taking care of one another.
Send in the clowns? Hey, they’re already here!

I’m with you all the way, Pat. You could have just written “Stop the World, I Want to Get Off” and that would have been a full post.
I have finally come to face the fact that despite seven years of higher education and thirty-five years of work, I am going to have a very financially limited semi-retirement. I am of course grateful I’m alive and relatively healthy. I am more worried to see the steady downward slope of the economy affecting my daughter as she and her husband worry about my precious granddaughter. It hurts me that I will not be able to provide for them as I had hoped I would. We are only being held back from the edge of poverty, ciinging to the last rung of the dying middle class by the frugal management of my father’s slender assets, which grow smaller every day as the stock market fails and the expenses rise.
Well, let’s be grateful we’re at least here, if we can. And we got shoveled out and de-iced. Scraping the ice off the car is my idea of hell. I’m going home soon and will observe the passing of time with a nice glass of budget champagne and watching the Philharmonic concert.
Blessed New Year to all, and much love and thanks to all of you for your hard work and support each day of the year.
@2 Love it!! Glad I’m not the only one who’ll have to face the lecture in a couple of weeks. I refuse to be weighed, and Chat, we can just tell them statins and BP meds are for counteracting what we eat! OK i admit BP meds are more important. I was reading this fascinating little monograph about FDR. It seems he had blood pressure in the 250 or higher systolic range, but at that time, there were no effective medications to control it. His daughter Anna knew the White House doc wasn’t doing anything and took him to Bathesda, where the docs correctly diagnosed congestive heart failure secondary to extremely high BP. But all they could do was tell him there was nothing they could do!
Roosevelt knew his days were numbered when he selected Truman as his VP. Now imagine: Sarah Palin?
If anyone feels an urge to post “Send in the Clowns” I highly recommend the Judi Dench version. Or Bernadette Peters.
Tea Party to Primary Mitch McConnell in 2014 he is to liberal for them! This means congratulations Senator Ashley Judd!
Has Anyone heard anything more on Hillary Clinton and her blood Clot?
For me:
Well, I tried to post a video twice but it disappeared both times. Maybe I went off the fiscal cliff and died and don’t know it yet.
Thank you Chat. Hey folks, there are probably enough versions of “Send in the Clowns’ that we dedicate one to each and every idiot congresscriter. Actually, that’s an insult to clowns and Sondheim.
Just imagine, if we had women like Dame Judy, Judy C. Barbra, Helen Mirrren, Vanessa Redgrave in Congress would ANY of this be happening? Oh and Lauren Bacall. And Hillary for Prez of course, When she feels better.
@22: Yeah, they would do a great job, but Dwight Yoakam looks really good in leather pants.
I’m going out tonight so I’m wishing you a Happy New Year’s now, Widdershins! Hope 2013 is a fantastic year for you all!
Happy New Year’s to all who can’t stay awake.

In keeping with today’s discouraging “headlines”: Heading toward the fiscal cliff, Hillary Clinton hospitalized, Kim Kardashian pregnant!
I rest my case.
