A Single-Payer Sit In

A Single-Payer Sit In

It’s Action Wednesday, Widdershins. Are you ready to do something?

Keep Pushing for Medicare for All!

As we posted last week, single-payer sit-ins happened all around the country on Thursday, October 15th. They were so successful that single-payer activists are pledging to do more of them. In particular, an organization called Mobilize for Health Care, which has been endorsed by several other of the organizations we link to, offers opportunities for activists to pledge to sit in, to engage in legal protest, and/or to help with bail money for those activists who have sacrificed their personal freedom for the essential human right to health care.

HealthJustice says, make some calls this week. Tell Nancy Pelosi, Henry Waxman and Steny Hoyer we want HR 676, Medicare for All! Here’s the number at the Capitol switchboard: (202) 225-3121.

Sign VoteVets’ Petition to Close Gitmo Now!

Liz Cheney has decided to make it her mission to rewrite the history of Gitmo. Now it’s patriotic to torture, and we must keep Gitmo open forever or the entire universe will explode! After all, her dad said waterboarding was “a no-brainer.” (Shudder.)

I have found that VoteVets is a very credible organization, because it is truly nonpartisan. They put the interests of the troops first, and sometimes that means the military too, so as a peace-loving liberal I do not always agree with them. However, in this case, I could not agree with them more. If you’d like to sign their petition, click here.

Participate In a Global Day of Action on Climate Change This Saturday, October 24th!

An organization called 350 is organizing these events. There are more than 1400 in the United States alone! Click here for an interactive map showing all the registered actions in America.

Go See Hill-a-Reeeee in DeeCee on November 6th!

NoLimits.org’s First Annual Public Policy Conference, with our Secretary of State as keynote speaker, will take place in Washington, D.C. Click here to find out more and purchase tickets.

Get Rid of Abusive New York State Senator Hiram Monserrate

From New York State’s NOW Chapter comes this petition to force Hiram Monserrate to leave his seat in the New York State Senate. Why? He has been found guilty of cutting his girlfriend’s face badly enough for her to need forty stitches, yet the judge in his case let him off with a misdemeanor. Technically, he could still go back to the Senate if his Party does not throw him out. Tell the New York Dems to send a better message to New York’s women by kicking Monserrate to the curb.

On November 3, Maine Could Be the Latest State to Enact Marriage Equality – If You Help!

The Courage Campaign is taking volunteers for phone banking on Election Day. Click here to call Maine residents and tell them to vote NO on the bigoted East Coast version of Prop 8, Prop 1.

We hope one of these actions speaks to you. If not, please feel free to browse the links on the left side of the blog, or check out the Resources for Women page, for more ideas and actions.

This is an open thread.

Lots to do. Thanks for the links.

Thanks, Chat! I hope the single-payer sit-ins continue. I think that’s the kind of thing that really gets people’s attention.

Also, I do believe calling and faxing works, especially after a long period of time. At least, it annoys the hell out of them.

It’s hubby’s birthday today – am running around and won’t be back till evening. Have a great day!

One of my friends who was a long-term employee in Congress told me that 50 letters is considered a landslide.

Guess that we’ve all had a busy day.

Yes, I guess so! LOL

These aren’t really comment posts anyway…more FYI.
:-)

MB – Great informational post with a rundown of such important upcoming events. Another one: Make a donation in any amount to the Clinton Foundation today for a chance to join President Clinton in New York City for a day on December 1.

Off topic but I got this from a college friend of mine:

A HS classmate of mine has a company making TSA screening-friendly bags. I “busted his chops” a bit when I found out they’re made in China. This is what he replied:

We do have a Made In USA version of the bag but they only sell in Japan. The Japanese refuse to purchase Made in China goods. They are made in Cleveland and sell for $400/each. I’m not kidding. Our leather bags are made in Pakistan and India. Our football jerseys are made at the Nike factory in Manila. I tried for a year to find someone to make jerseys in the USA.
Maybe if MORE countries REFUSE to buy things made in China, things will turn around!!!!!

Do you have Poor Coverage?

Thanks, Woman Voter – will check out the organization! (Nice ad!)
